Chapter 11: What Remains Unsaid

214 Words
Weeks passed like that. Not healing. Not breaking further. Just existing. Mira began to notice how loud everything else in her life had become without Adrian’s quiet presence to balance it. Conversations felt fuller, but less grounded. Laughter felt easier, but less steady. Even her time with Leo felt different—less anchored, more scattered. One afternoon, she found herself alone near the Academic Oval again. The trees swayed gently above her, casting shifting shadows on the pavement. She walked without direction until she stopped near the edge of a familiar path. It was where Adrian used to walk. Or still did. She wasn’t sure anymore. And that uncertainty was what unsettled her most. Mira sat on a bench nearby, staring at nothing in particular. For the first time, she didn’t try to justify anything. She didn’t try to explain away the distance or soften the reality of it. Instead, she accepted something she had avoided for a long time: Adrian had not changed. She had simply stopped noticing the consistency that was always there. And now that it was gone—or no longer directed toward her—it revealed itself as something she could no longer recover through awareness alone. Because awareness, she realized too late, is not the same as presence.
