Chapter 5: The Weight of Almost

215 Words
Mira noticed the silence before she noticed the person missing from it. Adrian no longer appeared where he used to. No longer handed her notes before she asked. No longer existed in the background of her day the way she had unconsciously grown used to. At first, she told herself it was better this way. Less complicated. Less unclear. But clarity has a strange way of revealing what it removes. And what it removed… was consistency. One afternoon, she found herself standing near the hidden bench under the old tree. She didn’t plan to go there. She just ended up there. The place looked the same. But it felt emptier. There was a faint mark on the ground where someone used to sit often. Faded. Barely noticeable. Still there. Like memory refusing to fully disappear. Mira sat down. For a moment, she didn’t understand why. Then she remembered. This was where Adrian stayed. Not loudly. Not noticeably. Just… always there. Her phone buzzed. Leo: hey, are you coming later? She stared at the message, then didn’t reply immediately. Instead, she looked around the empty space beside her. And for the first time, she thought something she hadn’t thought before. He never asked for anything back. The realization didn’t come with emotion. It came with weight.
