Chapter 7: After the Rain

222 Words
After the rain that day, something subtle changed in Adrian’s life—not in a way anyone else could easily notice, but in the way he carried himself when no one was looking. He still woke up early for class. Still walked the familiar paths of the university under the shade of acacia trees. Still sat in lectures, wrote notes, listened to voices that filled rooms he never fully belonged to. But there was a difference now. He no longer searched for Mira. Before, it had been automatic—his eyes would always find her without him meaning to. A habit shaped over time, quiet and unconscious. He would notice where she sat, who she talked to, whether she laughed that day. Now, he didn’t look. Or rather, he chose not to. It wasn’t anger that stopped him. It wasn’t even sadness anymore. It was exhaustion of expectation. And with that, something inside him settled into a quieter form of acceptance. Mira, on the other hand, noticed the absence almost immediately. At first, she told herself it was nothing. People changed schedules. People got busy. People drifted. But Adrian had never drifted before. He had always been there. Consistent in a way she had never thought to question. Now, he wasn’t. And the silence he left behind was louder than she expected.
