Chapter 2 Mariah’s POV Today is the day of my final interview at Davidson Enterprises. I wear a simple black and white plaid skirt paired with a white shirt and a black cardigan. Putting on my four inch black heels with a red sole which is a new find in the vintage shop near my place. I make myself look professional in a low key make-up and setting my hair into a low bun. “Yey, I look beautiful! I can do this! The job is mine!” I uproariously cheered myself. I encouraged myself, claiming the job. Even though it wasn’t offered officially to me yet. I was rejected from past applications but I have a good feeling about this company. Deep within, I feel like the job is tailored for me. “Oh goodness gracious! Hope I’m right with this one.” Looking at the time, I hastily get my purse and checked if everything is inside. Just my luck there’s an empty cab outside my apartment. I flagged it and give the address to the driver. Good fortune is with me as traffic is flowing smoothly and arrived quickly at my destination. When the cab stopped outside Davidson Enterprises’ building, my nerves started working up. I paid my fare, went out the cab and walked towards the lobby of the building. There are so many people inside who seem in a rush to get on their way. I nearly collided with someone who came out of nowhere but I quickly avoided her by moving to the right. Just when I thought that I’m scot free, a hard force like a big block of wood pushed me forward. Knees meet floor. Floor meet my knees. It is a very intimate moment for my knees and floor that it made me instantly cry buckets. “Uuuuggghhhh!!!!!....I screamed loudly. The pain is tremendous. I lied sideways on the floor clutching my knees to my chest. I have no care how I look, whether I look ridiculous or pitiful. I feel someone is kneeling by my side, trying to get a good look at my injured knee. His hand grip my shin and his other hand is on my back near my shoulder. “Are you okay?”, a masculine voice worriedly asked me while rubbing my back giving me slight comfort. He assisted me to stand when I nodded my head without looking at him confirming that I am okay. He picked up my bag and gave it me. “Ugh. Uhmmm. . . Thanks.” I awkwardly get my bag from him while dusting off my clothes and putting them to right. When I looked at him, I stuttered a bit and abruptly stopped talking. He’s so handsome! Oh God, he’s quite tall and lean on the muscular side. Yum! He stared at me as well, albeit concerned for my well-being. I see him like he’s puffing his chest and stand tall. He seems to be talking but I can’t hear a thing. All I see is his chiseled jaw, piercing grey eyes and aquiline nose. Suddenly, he smiled. He takes my hand and pulled me a bit towards him. I lost my balance making me hold on his chest. He instantly put his other hand on my waist, I think to brace himself with my weight. “Miss, are you okay? Did you hit your head on the floor? I’ll bring you to the hospital.” I came to my senses quickly. Hospital is not for me. I disentangled myself from him. I put a reasonable distance but not so far I can’t feel his heat. My heart is beating so fast. May be because of my fall why I feel this way. “I’m fine. It is quite painful though. Still, I think there’s no major injuries. I feel no broken bones. Oh, look at the time! I need to go. Thanks!” Looking at the time at my watch made me instantly forget the pain of my injuries. Leaving my savior, I ran to the reception desk where two receptionists are avidly watching me or the spectacle I was involved a while ago. I politely asked for the floor where my final interview will be held. The receptionist gave me precise instructions and directions to the 34th floor. I went to the elevator, joining the queue of workers on their way up. Looking left and right, I looked for the man who helped but he isn’t here anymore. Oh well, if he’s working here I might meet him soon or sooner and I can thank him properly. Getting on the 34th floor, there is a receptionist who looked in my way with a friendly face. I directly went to her station and logged for the interview. She waved to the lounge seats provided for guests until I was called again to another office for my interview. Entering the office, I see Mr. Fritz again. He greeted me warmly and so did I. “Good seeing you again, Miss Palm. Please have a seat.”, Mr. Evan fritz waved me to sit on the chair in front of his desk. “Pleasure meeting you again, Sir. Call me Mariah, please. I feel old and stiff when you call me Miss Palm.”, I said to him politely. I don’t easily get comfortable with others but with Mr. Fritz, I feel at ease. If I have a brother, he is it. He’s a brother I imagine myself having. “Mariah, I know that you know that with your credentials, you have lesser chance of being hired here. Especially that the Marketing Department wanted someone who has an extensive experience and grasp of the position to be filled. The job of a Marketing Associate also requires someone to have a fresh creative ideas to cultivate imagination that will spur new ideas the team can utilize. The . . . . . . . . . . . .”, Mr. Fritz droned on and on. With the words coming from Mr. Fritz’ mouth, I feel dejected. Failure is so heavy on my shoulder. I was so hopeful when I came here, so full of excitement and so sure I’ll get the job. I lost interest hearing Mr. Fritz yapping away. I just wish his speech comes to an end. I want to go home and lie on my bed to wallow with sadness, with self-pity. Before going home, I need to stop by the grocery store. I need to get Ben and Jerry cookies and cream to complete my pity party. I’ll savor my failure and bury it tonight but tomorrow, I’ll rise shedding off this negative energy. I silently planned what I feel needed to be done. The f4ck with Mr. Fritz and this job! “. . . . . . . . . with your life experience and positive attitude, we decided to have you join Marketing Department team. You are now the new Marketing Associate, Mariah. Welcome to Davidson Enterprises!”, Mr. Fritz happily stated. I was awakened from my reverie when Mr. Fritz take my hand and shake it. All the while congratulating me. I slowly caught on what he meant and I jumped off my seat. I smiled from ear to ear with happiness. I chastised myself for thinking otherwise and not listening to Mr. Fritz. “Wow, this is great! Thank you. Thank you so much for this opportunity, Sir! I’ll do my best to fulfill my role in this company. I will not let you down. Thanks for giving me a chance even though I lack so many things than the other applicants. Oh God, I. . . I. . .thank you!” “No thanks needed, Mariah. Just do your job well and that you deserve it. By the way, call me Evan. Mr. Fritz is my old man, my dad. I cringe every time you say it.”, Evan stated smiling at me. “Mariah, you’ll start tomorrow. Be here at exactly eight in the morning. Don’t be late. Tardiness is a major no-no in this company. I’ll introduce you tomorrow to your co-workers and give you a tour. You can go now. Again, congratulations.”, Evan stood up and guided me to the door. “I will be here bright and early tomorrow morning, Evan. See you then.” I smiled at him and walked out the door. Yes, I’m awesome! I’d still go to the grocery store to get Ben and Jerry cookies and cream to celebrate my new job. Yey!
