By My Side

Fu Yichen didn’t even bat an eye as he strode forward, his steps long and confident, his face cold. But Su Mi was overwhelmed by the grandiose scene, especially the pristine white carpet on the floor. She was soaked in rainwater and mud, her clothes dirty, and she still held a bundle of soiled garments. It made her feel as though she had wandered into a swan’s territory, a clumsy duck with no place among them. A strange sense of inferiority crept over her, and for a moment, she couldn’t move. Fu Yichen noticed she hadn’t caught up. His pace slowed abruptly, and he turned back to look at her. There she stood, holding the clothes, her head lowered like a child who had done something wrong. He raised an eyebrow, impatience flickering in his eyes. Without a word, he walked back towards her and asked, “What’s wrong?” Su Mi looked up at him, pointing to her muddy shoes. “I... I don’t think I should go in. I’m afraid I’ll dirty the carpet, and that wouldn’t be good…” Fu Yichen’s gaze dropped to her feet and then to her downcast face, her trembling eyelashes. He suddenly understood, his lips pressing together. “Afraid? If you lack courage, then let me give it to you.” With that, he unexpectedly raised one hand in front of her, right there in the open, under the gaze of everyone around. Su Mi blinked in shock, her heart racing. She looked up to see him standing in the brightest spot, his hand casually tucked into the pocket of his tailored pants. He turned slightly, the light casting a perfect shadow over his chiseled profile and broad shoulders. His posture exuded pure nobility, the very embodiment of power, looking every bit like an emperor. Su Mi could feel every eye in the room on them, all kinds of gazes—curious, envious, jealous, astonished. Her heart thundered, yet she couldn’t resist the pull, and slowly, she raised her hand, placing it in his open palm. Fu Yichen took her hand, his eyes locking with hers as he spoke in a tone of quiet authority, “Remember this—standing by my side, Fu Yichen, you are not allowed to be timid! You are not allowed to doubt yourself!” As he spoke, he tightened his grip on her hand and turned, pulling her forward with him. Su Mi’s heart shook violently, her eyes stinging with the hint of tears. “Why are you so useless? You can’t even wash a dish properly! Besides your looks, what else do you have to offer?” “Get out of here, good-for-nothing who only eats the food we give you!” “Sis, no matter how hard you try, Mom and Dad’s favorite daughter will always be me. You need to remember that!” “So what if you got into the Imperial Capital Film Academy with the highest score? If we don’t support you, you’ll amount to nothing!” … As she walked behind Fu Yichen, these painful memories flashed through her mind. Since childhood, Su Mi had never been loved by her family. She had been surrounded by endless insults, sarcasm, and rejection. No matter how hard she tried, her deep-rooted sense of inferiority never seemed to fade. But now, she was being led forward by Fu Yichen, stepping into a dazzling future. His commanding words echoed in her ears: “Don’t be timid. Don’t doubt yourself!” She gazed at his tall, upright figure, and a smile began to tug at the corners of her lips. Her steps grew lighter, more confident. As they entered the lobby, the whispers among the receptionists burst out. “Wow, the boss looks so handsome. Who is that woman? The boss actually held her hand!” “Oh my gosh, if the boss treated me like that, I’d be willing to die right now!” “That woman doesn’t deserve him. I’m way prettier than she is!” “Yeah, this carpet is made of hand-woven French cashmere. It’s worth hundreds of thousands! Just look at all the mud stains! It’ll never be usable again!”
