JAMES'S POV
Returning to my home from the coffee shop was a quiet affair. Emily’s words played over in my head and I could not stop myself from feeling anxiety bubbling up inside of me.
Marcus had always caused me trouble, but now with a child in the picture, it felt as though the danger was increasing.
After pulling into the driveway and turning the engine off, I was still deep in thought. Although Emily’s fragility made me feel like I was weighed down with bricks, her courage was what kept me standing on my two feet..
Upon my arrival home; my assistant, Aiden, seemed to have been waiting for me since time was however already taken. Aiden's eyes flicked over me, taking note of the tensed lines of my face. "James, you look like you've seen a ghost."
I offered a smile but my attempt was half-hearted. "It's been a long day, Aiden. Leave it at that."
Aiden was not convinced. He followed me up to my office, his wonderment was palpable. "Is everything okay with Emily?" he questioned cautiously, knowing better than to press too much.
I was silent in my response, holding back the information. Aiden had been with me from the beginning through thick and thin; he deserved my honesty. "It's complicated, Aiden. Marcus is being Marcus, and now he’s pulled Emily into it."
Aiden’s brows came together in worry. "How’s she holding up?"
I sat down at my desk, running a hand over my hair. "She’s hanging in there. However, it’s different now. Marcus knows about the baby."
Aiden's eyes widened. "The baby? James, this is serious. What does he want?"
I let out a heavy breath, allowing the weight of everything to settle on me. "He wants to meet with me. Tomorrow. He is threatening to expose everything unless I agree to meet."
Aiden’s jaw clenched. "We can't let him control the narrative, James. We have to be proactive."
I nodded, grateful for his steadfast loyalty. "I know, Aiden. But it’s more than business rivalry. Emily's past is catching up to her, and she is frightened – for herself and the baby."
Aiden's expression turned serious. "Then we both need to be there for her, James. She needs us."
Pulling back, the reality of what was happening began to set in. I nodded. "You're right. But even more important... I need to find a way to keep her safe without making things worse."
Aiden bit his lower lip as his brain whirred. "I'll brainstorm with you. Maybe we can cool our heads. The first thing you need to do is talk to Emily."
I nodded back. "Thanks for being the voice of reason."
EMILY'S POV
Sitting on the edge of my bed, I looked at myself in the mirror. My hand moved down to my stomach, and I could now see my pregnancy as an actuality. The early symptoms were starting—nausea, fatigue, and constantly needing to pee. Yet what was more overwhelming wasn't just the physical aspects, but the emotional heaviness of the situation.
James's words from earlier resonated in my mind. "You move forward alone." Was I capable of doing this without him? The idea of raising a child by myself was more than overwhelming. The unknown answers to my future with the baby were scary, but, in the end, I had no other choice.
There was a soft knock at my door, and James walked in. The look on his face seemed a mix of concern and determination. "Emily, we need to talk." I tried to prepare myself for whatever was to follow.
"What is it, James?" I asked after he sat down next to me.
"It's about something that Aiden said. We are in this together, but I can't sit back and let Marcus control our life," after he took a few seconds to look at me, he stated.
I felt a glimmer of hope. "What does that mean?"
"It means we need to be smart about this. Marcus cannot have total control over our lives. We have to take one step ahead of him." I replayed his burn strategy in my head. I was very appreciative of his hard heartedness.
I nodded in agreement. "But how? He has already threatened to expose everything. What more could we do?"
James clenched his jaw. "What we need to do is gather evidence against him. Something we can use as leverage. Something that will discredit him, protect us."
It was like a wave of determination hit me then. "What do you need me to do?"
James was in front of me now, his expression pensive. "I need you to trust me, Emily. We have to attend this meeting tomorrow, but we need to be prepared. And most importantly, you need to take care of yourself and the baby."
I nodded, finally feeling common ground. "I trust you. But I'm scared as well."
His hand reached out and found mine. "We will get through this, Emily. Together."
We made our way to the office the next morning. Tension was in the air. Already in the conference room was Aiden, his expression weighed down. "I've been digging on Marcus and I have found recent activity. He is covering his tracks well, but I think I may have something."
The look that James and I exchanged, it meant something. A spark of something. "What did you find?" James leaned into Aiden.
Aiden reached into his briefcase and pulled a file out, setting it on the table in front of us. "Marcus has been walking on the edge with some of his shady deal making. Laundering money, bribery, and a whole lot of illicit activities. If we can get concrete evidence, this will be what we have been waiting for."
I felt a rush of excitement. "How, though? We have this information but how do we get the proof?"
Aiden's eyes were sharp. "We know a warehouse that he runs his illegal activities from on the outskirts of town. The proof is likely sitting right there, we need to get in there."
James answered before I could get a word in. "We need a plan. Security is likely going to be top notch."
Aiden smirked. "All taken care of. I will handle the getting in part."
There was an impending sense of urgency as the final details came together before our mission. We were preparing for a battle where the stakes were higher than they had ever been before.
That evening, as we were making our final preparations to head to the warehouse, I received a new message on my cell phone. A wave of fear washed over me when I read the message:
"Emily, please come alone. Tonight at eight. The Maple Street warehouse. Or the baby will pay."
I showed the message to James, feeling my body quiver uncontrollably. "It's a trap," his voice was hard.
I was scared when I nodded. My heart was racing. "I have to go. I can't risk the baby's well-being."
James took me by my shoulders, his eyes locked on mine. "No, we can't do anything stupid. We're going together, no matter what."
When I emerged from the back of the warehouse later that night with James, I could see our destination ahead of us; a dark, ominous warehouse on the horizon, surrounded by eerie quiet. The anticipation of danger was palpable, each shadow carrying the burden of what could come next.
When we walked into the warehouse, a wave of calm washed over me. The lights were dim and I felt James grasp my hand, squeezing for support and comfort.
A figure emerged from the shadows. Marcus. A sinister half smirk on his face. "Glad you could make it, Emily. And James. I was hoping you would."
He stepped into the light, revealing a small device in his hand. "Let's see how far you would go to protect your life from others."
With each of his sinister chuckles that echoed off the walls of the warehouse, I could feel my heart beginning to race. We were about to reveal a truth that would change everything.
Suddenly, the lights went out.
