Meeting Him

Emily's POV I sat transfixed on the chair, my mind reeling with the news. I felt like I'd been slapped. Pregnant? No, that couldn't be right. I must have misheard. But the doctor's smile and the gleam in his eye told me I hadn't. "No, no, no," I stammered, my mind racing. "You can't be serious." "I am Ms. Harper. I wouldn't dare joke about something as good as this." He handed me a sheet of paper, and I glanced through it, my eyes scanning the words. "99% positive" jumped out at me, making my heart race. "But how?" I managed to stammer, my voice barely above a whisper. The doctor explained something about sperm and eggs, but I wasn't listening. I was too busy trying to wrap my head around this impossible news. The doctor continued, his voice a distant hum. "Now, let's go over the do's and don'ts. You'll need to take prenatal vitamins, avoid alcohol and caffeine, and get plenty of rest." I nodded, still in shock, my mind reeling with questions and fears. Then, his words snapped me back to reality. "And, Ms. Harper, I want to emphasize that terminating the pregnancy can be dangerous. Please don't consider it without thinking it through carefully." "Okay, thank you," I muttered absentmindedly. I left the hospital with thousands of questions swirling in my mind. I'm pregnant? How could that be possible? It was just a one-night thing, how could it lead to a pregnancy? Tears pooled in my eyes as I dragged my legs to the bus station. I was pregnant for a man who didn't even know what transpired between us that fateful night. Telling him was the last thing on my mind. How would he even react once he finds out? Mad? Happy? Furious? I couldn't tell. I hailed a cab and headed home, I couldn't control my mind from the countless thoughts it possessed. What would I tell Rachel when I get home? She'd be so disappointed in me. I'm old enough to be a mother, but getting pregnant without a male significant figure in your life is a whole lot of mystery. Rachel was in the living room, working on her laptop when I entered the house. Without raising her head from the laptop, she asked. "Hey, what's up? You're unusually late today," she questioned but I couldn't say a word. I was suddenly mute. "Em?" She raised her head to look at me. Seeing the devastated look on my face, she pushed her laptop aside and rushed to me. "Hey, what's wrong?" Tears streamed down my cheeks and she gasped. "Are you okay?" Pulling me into her arms, she caressed my hair slowly. "It's okay, Em. You'll be fine," she whispered. This was the reason why I loved Rachel. She understands me deeply. Even without saying a word, she knew I wasn't okay and ready to talk which she respected. "Here," Rachel handed me a cup of hot tea which I gladly received. I had stopped crying and she had volunteered to make me a cup of hot tea which I couldn't refuse. "So..." She began as I took a sip of the hot tea. "Do you mind telling me what's wrong with you?" She asked. I knew Rachel was still going to ask questions, and hiding the news from her wasn't my intention. She was bound to find out later on. "It's a long story," I sighed. "And I'm ready to listen to it," she smiled. I nodded and explained the whole thing to her. By the time I was done, Rachel's mouth was wide open, and her eyes flickered to my stomach for a brief moment which I didn't fail to notice. "YOU ARE PREGNANT?" She spelt out the words with widened eyes and I gave a slight nod. "For James Thornton?" She asked again. I nodded again. "WTF, Em!" She exclaimed. "Why didn't you tell me when you had s*x with him?" I cringed at her vulgar words. "Does it seem like something to be proud to say?" "Of course not!" She replied almost immediately. She sighed before asking in a calm voice. "Did you use a pill that day?" She asked. "No, I didn't." I mentally scolded myself. How could I have been stupid not to use a protective pill that morning? "Well, the deed is done. There's nothing to do about it," she shrugged. "You're not mad at me? Disappointed?" I asked, staring at her in surprise. "Why would I?" She c****d an eyebrow. "I've always dreamt of having a goddaughter, it's a dream come true for me," she grinned. "And don't you think of getting rid of the baby, Em," she flashed an accusing stare at me. "I wouldn't dare," I chuckled, my heart filled with love towards the lady before me. I scooted closer to her and wrapped my arms around her waist, laying my head on her shoulder. "Thanks, Rach, for not giving up on me," I whispered. "I would be insane to do that," I chuckled at her words. The night ended well for us both. Rachel volunteered to prepare dinner as she insisted I was now a mother of two. Well, Rachel didn't make the news of my pregnancy as devastating as I thought it would have been. The baby? I'd take care of it regardless of what the world will say. f**k James, he doesn't even know anyway. ••••••••• Morning came and I was already dressed for work. I had just finished my meal and Rachel had gone to take my bag. Ever since last night, she had been extra careful with me which I felt grateful for. Bless Rachel for being such a good and supportive best friend. "Here is your bag, Mother of two," she teased as she handed me my bag. "Oh, Rachel. Come on," I giggled. I bade her goodbye and headed to the bus station. Taxis were usually hard to find early in the morning, so the bus was the last option I had. Getting to the bus station, I stood by the roadside since the bench was filled with people sitting on it. Subconsciously, my hands went to my stomach and an unknown smile escaped my lips. The fact that a being was growing inside me was unbelievable. As I dwelled in my thoughts, a Bugatti Divo parked right in front of me and I furrowed my brows in confusion. Who is this? The glass winded down and the face of the person I was least expecting came into view. It was James. My heart skipped a beat at the sight of him. Dressed in an immaculate dark suit, with his hair styled to the front, he looked dashing. "Hop in," he smiled. I looked behind me to see who he was talking to, but it turned out to be me. "Me?" I pointed at my chest and he nodded with a smile. I scoffed. "No, thanks!" I shot, turning to stand elsewhere. "I think we both know why you're being paranoid," he suddenly said and I froze on the spot. "Don't we, Emily?" He asked again, and at that moment, I wished the ground could open up and swallow me.
