Liams POV
“Mate? What?? Rakin that is impossible”
“Mate!! Mate!! We must go to mate!!” Rakin was absolutely beside himself in my head, wagging around and salivating to get closer to her.
“Rakin! Stop and listen to yourself. She wasnt our mate yesterday. How is it that you are just now sensing this bond?”
Rakin was beyond listening to me.
“Mate is beautiful!” he said happily, trying to take control
“Do you hear yourself?? This isn't possible. Stop being stupid. She must be bewitching you somehow. Maybe that's why she came here. She was trying to bewitch me to become luna. Think Rakin. Why else would you not have sensed her as mate yesterday?”
Rakin finally faltered as he took in what I was saying.
“I don't know...I sort of felt it last night though. I felt something. You felt it too, remember? It is weird though, i can't sense her wolf.”
“I did not feel anything.” i said, although it wasn't totally true “See. Its weird. She isn't our mate. She must be using a spell or potion to mess with us”
Rakin was not to be deterred. “I’m not saying it's not weird. But let's give her a chance to explain! I do not think this is witchcraft, human! She is our mate. I feel it. I KNOW she is. I can feel the bond!” He was so confident that it was hard not to believe him. Hard, but not impossible. Stupid wolf.
I was beginning to feel really angry. How dare she attempt to trick us?? I was f*****g alpha. She is going to face the consequences, even if that meant death. Yes. She will have to die for this. It's the only way to show others not to attempt the same thing.
The others had begun to question her, but I hadn't been paying much attention. Tessa was speaking now, accusing her of attacking the higher-ranking members of her old pack.
“It was self-defense” I heard the girl say. Low and angry. Even as pissed off as i was, the sound of her voice melted me a little. It called to me like nothing else. It forced me to pay attention, and I realized I didn't like what I was hearing.
“I was supposed to complete the mate bond with alpha warren that night, but when he brought me to his room, he had other men there waiting for us. He thought I was being unfaithful to hm, so he wanted the other men to r**e me. He wanted to teach me a lesson. I was supposed to be punished.” She finished sadly but determined.
Rakin was horrified “How dare he touch our mate?! How dare he hurt her!” He wanted blood. My hands were clenched.
Fucking alpha Warren. He was undeserving of that title. What a sick prick. He had always rubbed me the wrong way at the meetings but i had never thought he would be capable of this. Despite everything, i began to plot his death. I also felt a twinge of pride. This tiny girl really was able to take care of herself against four strong men. She made it out alive.
But wait...what if she's lying? What if she used the same witchery against alpha warren that she’s using on us. Maybe he never did anything at all to her, and she murdered him because he found out. Yes! That sounded right. Anger was flooding through me again. This stupid b***h. She probably deserved it.
Tessa seemed in agreement with me, which somehow only irritated me further. She was yelling that the girl was lying and suddenly I couldn't stand her voice.
“Don't let her talk to mate like that!” Rakin protested
“Shes not our mate, Rakin!!! Shut up with it”
“She is our mate! You don't believe me but what if you're wrong? What if she is our mate? What if she isn't lying? You could be killing an innocent woman if you're wrong! Shes been through enough already.”
I looked at her face again. She looked fearfully back at me, and I hated being the one that caused her fear. I couldn't stand it- even if it was just the fake bond talking. I felt that same need to protect her overwhelm me again.
Standing up I finally spoke. “Dr. Heck, take her to the infirmary and look her over. Mason will escort you over there. Ill decide what to do with her after.” I realized I had been too wrapped up in my thoughts earlier and hadn't heard her name. I’d have to get it from Mason. Not that it mattered. Not that I cared. Besides, the death penalty still wasn't off the table for her.
Rakin growled.
Tessa was pissed. She couldn't understand why I was sparing the girl. Tessa wasn't a bad person, and she truly believed what she was saying. She honestly thought the girl was lying, and so did i. So why was i bothering giving her a checkup?
She put her hand on my shoulder trying to gauge with me and I felt an instant dislike come over me. I had always welcomed Tessa's touches, so I wasn't sure what this new feeling was. I had to fight the urge to recoil from her.
“Mate bond” Rakin said quietly
“Enough Tessa!” I cut off whatever stupid thing she was saying. I was tired of her and i was tired of this confusing mess. I had to get out of there. I practically ran from the room and up to my office. Desperate to think in peace.
