Myra POV
I followed Dr. Heck and Kristi through the dungeons and up to the upper levels. Mason followed close behind me as if expecting me to suddenly start fighting everyone there. I certainly wasn't going to fight anyone, but i hadn't forgotten my earlier decision to memorize the dungeons and possibly use that as a means of escape later. However, that proved to be impossible like Mason had said. There were so many twists and turns there was no way for me to remember this.
At last, guards opened up two heavy looking doors and sunlight hit my face. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, I couldn't believe how much it was affecting me to be in there. I felt the tension leave my body that i didn't even know i was carrying.
Dr.Heck chuckled, “Feel better? You should! Those dungeons are enchanted with multiple spells to make anyone down there feel tense and depressed” he said this a little too cheerfully.
“You shouldn't be telling her that”, Mason grunted behind me.
Dr. Heck nudged my shoulder, surprising me with his easy touch. “You’re not going to tell anyone are you or use that against us?” he said playfully, and I was instantly reminded of pop's easy-going nature. My heart ached.
“I won’t.” Who did I have to tell anyway? Mason grunted again but didn't say anything else.
I looked around, taking in my surroundings. Id never been to another pack, It was interesting to see the set up here. It looked pretty much like my own, just the layout was a little different and what looked to be the packhouse was much larger.
I looked back towards the dungeons we had just come out of and stopped dead in my tracks. It was so abrupt that Mason ran into me and I would have fallen over except he caught me by the waist and pulled me upright. The second I was steady on my feet, he dropped his hands back to his sides. He looked irritated.
“What?” he asked and followed my gaze. Understanding lightened his eyes.
Surrounding the dungeons, were at least 10 tall wooden poles. From each pole hung a body, each in varying stages of decay. Some were full skeletons, while others seemed like they still had a ways to go.
“That is horrible.” I said aloud before i could stop myself.
“Thats Alpha Liam.” Dr. Heck said, nodding.
“Alpha Liam did that? That is cruel, not to mention disgusting. "Doesn't the smell bother everyone?” I was horrified
“It’s one of his punishments for people he feels have done the most wrong. Inject them with wolfsbane and then leave them up there to die. He calls them decorations.” Dr. Heck explained. I looked at his face, trying to see if he held any remorse for this. He just shrugged, looking totally unbothered. Sicko.
“And as far as the smell,” Kristi added speaking for the first time “it's far enough away from the packhouse that you only smell it if you are near the dungeons. It’s a good deterrent from people breaking laws.” She was on the defensive seeing the judgement in my eyes. Yes, they were all sickos. What was wrong with this pack?
“Come on. Let's get a move on. The hospital is on the complete opposite side of here and it’s going to take a while since you need to be escorted.” Mason sounded irritated but i thought i caught a bit of amusement in his voice now.
He was right. The walk did take a long time, but I didn't mind. The fresh air felt freeing even though I knew I was anything but. A smile grew on my face without my permission, and I could see Mason from the corner of my eye, eyeing me curiously.
“This is it!” Dr. Heck said, stopping in front of a large building.
“Finally.” Mason groaned theatrically.
“You can go now.” Dr. Heck told him
“Alphas orders.”
“Fine then. "Come on up, but you can wait outside,” he said sternly, and we made our way into one of the rooms.
“Why don’t you go get us some food? She’s got to be starving. I know I am. I can watch her for a bit”, Kristi asked Dr. Heck.
“Good idea. You know enough now, you can do the exam without me. I’ll be back with some food for all of us” he said, unbothered.
As the door shut behind him, she turned to me
“How are you feeling? Those dungeons can be harsh.” She asked me kindly. I was surprised and suspicious. She hadn’t talked much yet, so i wasn't sure what to make of her.
“I’m okay.” I told her honestly. “Just tired.”
She nodded and then paused for a second. “I believe you too you know.” She blurted out suddenly.
“Um, thanks.” I said surprised but also pleased.
“I better get started on your exam now”
She worked for a while very focused. But the silence was starting to get to me. “You’re in training to be the next pack doctor?”
She nodded not looking up from her work. “Yes. I have always felt drawn to the hospital. I loved watching Dr. Heck work even as a pup. He is like a second father to me. A better father than my own father.” she let out a harsh laugh. “I think you met him during your stay in the dungeons.”
I gasped. “The man down there is your father?” I asked shocked. Trying to compare her face to the dimly lit face in my memory. “Does that mean Beta Mason is your brother?” I was starting to put the pieces together.
“Yes, and yes.” she laughed, more carefree this time. “There are three of us siblings. Mason and Tessa are twins and my older siblings. They are a little harsher on my dad than I am. When our mom died, our dad fell apart. "He’s been causing a lot of trouble for the pack.” she said sadly.
“I am so sorry.” I told her, wondering what he had done and why he seemed to be so angry with the alpha.
She smiled. “It’s okay. I’m sorry for oversharing with you. I know you didn't ask for that and you've been through enough.”
Just then, Dr. Heck walked in. His arms carrying two trays overflowing with food.
“How's she look, Kristi?” he asked setting the food down.
“Great! She’s got some bruising and is dehydrated. Nothing a full night's sleep and some food can't cure. Mason!” She called “We're done! You can come in and eat now!”
“Great! I'm starved.” Mason said coming in and looking appreciatively at the food.
“Don’t eat everything. She needs to eat too!” Kristi scolded him, and he rolled his eyes at her.
“What's the alphas plans for her?” Dr. Heck asked between bites, and I looked up at Mason nervously.
Mason glanced at me. “He wants her to start under Hazel immediately after were done here.”
“He’s putting her to work already? She needs to rest! What was the point of an examination if i can't even treat her?” Kristi asked angrily.
“It's better than being thrown back in the dungeons. Besides its Hazel. Alpha might think this is a punishment, but we all know she's a big softie” Mason grinned.
“What will I be doing?” I asked timidly.
“Hazel is head chef of the kitchens. Just do whatever she needs you to do without complaint. The alpha has ordered you to work in the kitchens as a slave,” Mason said, his voice turning hard.
