The Last Day Begins
SUDS MERRICK SAT in a circle with twenty of his men—all handpicked for the burglary of a boat loaded with goods headed for Europe. Merrick understood part of the shipment included jewelry and other portable goods, which could be snatched and taken away quickly. The plan for each burglary involved two groups of men. The first created an obstruction in the street about two blocks away from their intended target. The second group gained control of the ship and committed the actual burglary. Once the second group fled, the entire g**g dispersed and met later to split the proceeds.
