The Price of Silence

He released me and crossed to the door. The brass lock turned with a solid, echoing click. He approached the dresser where the cash rested in the neat stack I had been forced to arrange. Picking up the top bundle, he flipped through the bills once, the sound crisp in the quiet room. “Stealing on our wedding night is sloppy.” His voice stayed dead even, devoid of warmth. “If I get the police involved that ruins my public image.” He set the bundle back down and gathered the rest. “If I inform your family, they’ll beg for mercy.” He carried every single bill across the room. Behind a dark, oil painting of some stern old man in a suit, a small safe was built directly into the wall. He opened it, placed the money inside, and locked it again. The heavy painting swung smoothly back into place, hiding the safe once more. Only then did he turn. He stripped the half-open shirt from his broad shoulders in one smooth motion and let it fall to the floor. His frame carried the hard, terrifying weight of a man who ruled through fear. His eyes landed on the ruined wedding gown still hanging off me… the delicate fabric torn from my failed escape. “Strip.” I froze for a second under his cold gaze, then slowly stripped away the remaining silk and lace. The ruined dress dropped to the floor around my ankles. Cool air touched my bare skin while his eyes dragged down my body, lingering heavy on my hips before rising to meet mine. He stepped into the narrow space between my knees. I shoved against his hard chest, but he didn't even flinch. In one swift, unyielding movement, he pushed me back onto the sheets and trapped both of my wrists above my head in a single, crushing grip. His thumb slid over the small scar on my left wrist, tracing the raised mark for a second longer than needed. I met his eyes head-on. The hatred in my chest stayed sharp, burning, and hidden. He saw it. His jaw flexed once. He pushed my thighs apart with his knee, offering no gentleness. No pretend kindness. He grabbed the waistband of his slacks, freed his c**k with a rough yank, and the heavy weight sprang up against his stomach as he fisted it and lined himself up. Thrusting in hard. The stretch burned through me. I bit the inside of my cheek until I tasted copper and stayed completely silent. He drove deep, steady—the exact way a man takes something he already owns. The bed creaked under his weight. Cold silk sheets slid against my back. His free hand gripped my hip hard enough to leave deep bruising marks. I kept my eyes open the entire time. Every time he looked down, the same cold hate stared right back at him. He f****d me harder for it. The raw sound of skin meeting skin filled the hushed room. Sweat beaded on his chest. Mine stayed cold. He finished with a low sound in his throat and stayed buried inside me for a long, heavy moment. Then he pulled out and stood. Arthur walked over to the chair, stepped into his trousers, and buttoned them without hurry. He crossed to the heavy glass terrace doors and checked the deadbolt. “You’ll play the part in public,” he said, his tone commanding. “Smile when people look. Stand where I tell you. Speak when I allow it.” He tested the lock again. “You don’t leave the estate without my word. Not for a walk. Not for air. Not for anything.” I stayed on the bed, pulling the sheets tight over my body. This East Wing sat far away from the main halls of the estate. The walls were thick. The staff rarely came here after dark. Late-night movement stayed private by design. I locked that vital knowledge deep where no one could see it. Arthur unlocked the main door and stepped out. The lock clicked firmly behind him. The room fell dead silent. I waited on the bed until his footsteps in the hallway fully faded into nothing. Then I stood on shaky legs and walked to the bathroom. The marble floor felt like ice under my bare feet. I turned the hot water on full blast. Steam rose fast, filling the room. I stepped under the scalding spray and scrubbed. Soap. Water. Nails dragging hard against skin. I washed until the heavy smell of his cologne finally washed down the drain, taking the lingering ghost of Elena’s rose perfume with it. When I stepped out, the large mirror was completely fogged over. I wiped a clear circle with my wet hand. Eyes rimmed in deep red stared back at me, raw from unshed tears. Wet hair stuck to my neck. Crying had never saved me. Not in seven years of leftovers and chores. Not when they sold me. Not tonight. I dried off quickly. Slipping into a simple nightgown from the closet, I walked back to the bed. The sheets still held his body heat, so I pressed myself to the absolute far edge and stared blankly at the ceiling. Playing the obedient wife would be my cover. Mapping the cameras, the staff routines, and every soft spot in his control would be the real work. Once I had them all, I’d make my move. The digital clock on the nightstand showed past two in the morning when the heavy lock on the bedroom door clicked. Soft. Slow. I squeezed my eyes shut and kept my breathing completely even. Light steps crossed the thick carpet. My heart hammered so hard I swore I could feel it in my teeth. I waited for the mattress to dip. For his weight. For whatever cruelty came next. Nothing. Silence stretched tight. The air beside the bed turned freezing cold. I opened my eyes. A tall, broad shape stood motionless right beside the mattress, staring down at me in the dark.
