Rain poured over the city like the sky had finally decided to break.
Amara Okeke stood outside the tallest building in Lagos, clutching the strap of her handbag as
though it was the only thing keeping her from collapsing.
Her thoughts were somewhere else—
At the hospital, where her father lay fighting for his life.
The doctors had been kind at first, but kindness could only go so far.
"We are sorry, Miss Okeke," they had told her that morning.
"Without payment, we can not continue with his treatment."
Those words still echoed painfully in her mind. She had exhausted every option.
Friends had nothing to give.
Relatives had stopped answering her calls.
Loans had been rejected.
Hope itself seemed to have abandoned her.
Then, out of nowhere, a mysterious message arrived.
Come to Knight Group Headquarters, Ask for Mr. Alexander Knight.
No explanation, no signature. Just an address and a name.
Everyone in the country knew that name, Alexander Knight.
The youngest billionaire.
Brilliant.
Powerful.
Untouchable.
Feared by his competitors and admired from a distance.
A man whose face appeared on magazine covers but whose private life remained a mystery.
And somehow.. He wanted to see her.
Taking a shaky breath, Amara pushed through the revolving glass doors.
The lobby looked nothing like the world she knew.
White marble floors reflected dazzling crystal chandeliers.
Expensive artwork decorated the walls while sharply dressed executives walked confidently
across the room as if they owned time itself.
She suddenly became painfully aware of her simple shoes and inexpensive dress.
She didn't belong here.
She felt small.
Very small.
"Miss Okeke?" The gentle voice pulled her from her
thoughts.
Amara turned.
A tall woman dressed in a sleek black suit stood
beside her.
"Mr. Knight will see you now."
Amara nodded silently and followed her into a private elevator that rose silently through the
building.
The higher they went, the tighter the knot in her chest became.
What could a man like Alexander Knight possibly want with someone like her?
Finally, the elevator doors opened on the top floor.
She stepped into an office so enormous it barely looked real.
Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the entire city below, where tiny cars crawled through the rain—
soaked streets.
And standing by the window was a man.
Tall.
Broad-shouldered.
Dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit that seemed designed just for him. He turned slowly.
His dark eyes settled on Amara with an intensity that made her feel as though he could read every
thought she had ever hidden.
"Leave us," he told the secretary calmly.
The door shut behind her.
Now, it was just the two of them.
Silence filled the room.
Amara swallowed nervously.
"You....asked to see me?"
Without answering immediately
Alexander walked towards his desk and placed a thin folder in front of her.
"Inside this folder is a contract."
Amara frowned.
"A contract?"
"Yes."
His voice was calm, almost cold, revealing nothing.
"If you sign it, every one of your father's hospital bills will be paid.
Amara's breath caught in her throat.
Every bill.
Every treatment
Every Operation
Everything.
Her father would live.
It felt too good to be true.
It sounded impossible.
People like Alexander Knight didn't hand out miracles.
"There must be something you want from me," she said carefully.
Alexander leaned forward slightly.
"There is."
The air suddenly felt heavier.
She looked up cautiously.
"What do you want from me?"
For the first time, a faint expression crossed his face.
"There is one condition."
" You will marry me."
The words hit her like thunder.
Amara stared at him, convinced she had misunderstood.
"I'm... sorry, what?"
"A contract.
A marriage contract," he repeated evenly.
"Nothing more."
Her heart pounded loudly in her chest. She was sure he could hear it.
She shook her head in disbelief.
"Why would someone like you need a fake wife?"
Alexander stared at her for a long moment.
Then he said quietly, "Because someone is trying to kill me."
Amara froze.
The words hung heavily between them.
"And whoever it was, he continued slowly, believes i am about to get married.
They are watching my every move.
He pushed the contract closer to her.
"So the question is, Miss Okeke.his dark eyes locked onto hers,
"Are you brave enough to become the target?"
Lightning flashed outside the window and illuminated the office.
Amaras' hands trembled as she stared at the contract.
This marriage could save her father's life.
This single signature could rescue her family from losing everything.
But deep inside.... she had a terrible feeling.
Signing that paper might destroy hers.
