🛠️ What Is a Diesel Engine?
A diesel engine is an internal combustion engine that uses compression (not a spark) to ignite fuel. It powers everything from trucks and tractors to generators and ships.
🔄 How a Diesel Engine Works: The Four-Stroke Cycle
Most modern diesel engines operate using a four-stroke cycle, just like gasoline engines:
1. Intake Stroke
The intake valve opens, and the piston moves down.
Only air (not fuel) is drawn into the cylinder.
2. Compression Stroke
The intake valve closes, and the piston moves up, compressing the air.
This compression makes the air very hot (about 500–700°C or 930–1300°F).
3. Power Stroke (Combustion)
Near the top of the compression stroke, diesel fuel is injected directly into the cylinder using a high-pressure injector.
Because of the high temperature, the fuel ignites spontaneously (without a spark plug), causing a powerful explosion that forces the piston down.
4. Exhaust Stroke
The exhaust valve opens, and the piston moves up again, pushing out exhaust gases.
And then the cycle repeats.

🛻 Why Diesel?
Better fuel economy
More torque for towing and hauling
Longer engine life
Better at operating under heavy loads
💨 Downsides of Diesel Engines
Noisier (modern diesels are quieter now)
More expensive upfront
Heavier and bulkier
Historically more polluting (modern diesel filters and DEF reduce this)
🧠 TL;DR Summary:
A diesel engine compresses air so much that it gets hot enough to ignite fuel when it's sprayed in. No spark plugs. Just heat, compression, and power.
