Chapter 3: The Proposal

1112 Words
Elena paced the tiny kitchen of her apartment, the same question looping through her mind: What really does Adrian Knight want from her? The enigmatic billionaire had appeared in her life out of the blue, his presence growing impossible to ignore. At first, she thought it was a coincidence, a wealthy man slumming in her world for a taste of normalcy. But his frequent visits to the diner, the unexpected encounter at the hospital, and his offer of help gnawed at her. Her thoughts were interrupted by a knock on the door. She frowned, she wasn’t expecting anyone. Wiping her hands on a towel, she approached cautiously, peering through the peephole. Adrian Knight. Her heart sank and raced simultaneously. Taking a deep breath, she managed to open the door. “Mr. Knight?” she said, her voice laced with confusion. “What are you doing here?” He offered her a warm smile, stepping back slightly as though aware of her unease. “I’m sorry to show up unannounced, but I wanted to talk to you about something important.” Elena hesitated, glancing behind her at the cluttered apartment. She wasn’t exactly in a position to host a billionaire. “I, uh… now’s not really a good time for that.” “Please,” Adrian interrupted, his voice smooth and persuasive. “It won’t take long. I promise.” Reluctantly, she stepped aside, letting him in. He scanned the apartment briefly, his sharp eyes noting the peeling wallpaper and second-hand furniture. Yet, he said nothing, his focus returning to her. “Would you like some coffee?” she offered, fidgeting with the hem of her shirt. “No, thank you.” He gestured for her to sit. When she complied, he settled into the worn armchair across from her, his expression unreadable. “Elena,” he began, his tone gentler than she expected, “I know you’re struggling right now.” Her body stiffened, her defenses rising immediately. “What’s that supposed to mean?” He raised a hand, his expression calm. “It’s not a judgment. I’m just… just aware of your situation. Your brother’s medical bills, the long hours at the diner, the weight of everything you’re carrying. You shouldn’t have to do it alone, you know?” Elena’s cheeks flushed with a mix of embarrassment and anger. “With all due respect, Mr. Knight, my personal life is none of your business.” “I understand,” Adrian said smoothly, leaning forward slightly. “But what if I told you I could help?” She frowned, suspicion clouding her features. “Why would you want to help me? You don’t even know me.” “Maybe not,” he admitted, his piercing blue eyes locking onto hers, “but I believe in helping people who deserve it. And you, Elena, deserve a break. You really do ” The sincerity in his voice threw her off balance. She folded her arms, trying to keep her emotions in check. “What exactly are you offering?” Adrian leaned back, his demeanor cool and confident. “A proposition. One that could solve all your problems.” Her stomach churned at the word proposition. “Go on.” He paused, his gaze unwavering. “Marry me.” The words hung in the air, surreal and incomprehensible. Elena blinked, convinced she had misheard him. “Excuse me?” “You heard me,” Adrian said, his tone calm as though this were an everyday conversation. Elena laughed nervously, shaking her head. “This has to be a joke. Why would you want to marry me? We barely know each other!” “It’s not about love,” Adrian clarified, his voice steady. “It’s a business arrangement. A mutually beneficial one.” Her laughter died as she stared at him, trying to read his intentions. “What kind of arrangement?” “You marry me,” he explained, his expression serious. “In return, I’ll pay off all your debts, cover your brother’s medical expenses, and provide you with financial stability. In exchange, you’ll play the role of my wife for one year.” Elena’s jaw dropped. “Why? Why would you need a fake wife? You’re Adrian Knight, rich, famous, adored by millions. You could have anyone you wanted.” Adrian’s lips curved into a faint smile, though it didn’t reach his eyes. “Let’s just say it’s…necessary for my public image. A man in my position needs stability. A grounded, respectable partner. Someone like you.” The room fell silent as Elena tried to process his words. It sounded too good to be true, like the plot of a bad movie. But the desperation in her life made the offer hard to ignore. “What’s the catch?” she asked finally, her voice barely above a whisper. “No catch,” Adrian replied smoothly. “We both get what we want. Once the year is up, we go our separate ways. No strings attached.” Elena’s mind raced. She thought about Liam, lying in a hospital bed, the mounting bills she could never hope to pay on her meager wages. This could save him, save them. But at what cost? “Why me?” she asked, her voice trembling. Adrian hesitated for the first time, a flicker of something unreadable passing over his face. “Because I believe you’re the perfect candidate. You’re strong, independent, and… most importantly, you have nothing to lose.” Elena swallowed hard, her instincts screaming at her to say no. Yet, the weight of her brother’s needs crushed any objections. “I don’t know,” she said finally, her voice shaky. “I need time to think about it.” “Of course,” Adrian said, rising to his feet. “Take all the time you need. But don’t take too long. This offer has an expiration date.” As he moved toward the door, he paused, glancing back at her. “Just think about what you could gain, Elena. And what you have to lose if you say no.” With that, he left, leaving her alone with her thoughts. That night, Elena sat by Liam’s hospital bed, watching the steady rise and fall of his chest. She thought about the sacrifices she had made for him— the sleepless nights, the missed meals, the endless worry. Could she really marry a man like Adrian Knight, knowing his motives were far from noble? Could she sell herself for a chance at a better life for her brother? As the hospital’s fluores cent lights buzzed softly overhead, Elena made her decision. She couldn’t afford to say no.
