Chapter 6

769 Words
(Lex’s POV) The bell rings, signaling the start of class. Everyone scatters, whispering and side-eyeing me as they hurry into their rooms. I just stand there in the hallway, frozen, replaying what just happened. How do I even begin to explain this? I’m still in shock when a small hand suddenly grabs mine. I flinch—but the touch is gentle. “Don’t hurt me,” a soft voice says quickly, “but I think I can help you.” I look down to see a girl—maybe a sophomore, definitely younger than me—with wide, anxious eyes. She smells... different from everyone else. Not human. But not threatening, either. She tugs on my hand and pulls me into the girls’ bathroom before I can protest. Once the door shuts, she turns to face me. “My name’s Nina,” she says calmly. “When did you shift?” I stare at her like she just asked me to solve quantum physics. “Umm... what do you mean?” I ask, cautiously. “I’m a werewolf too. I haven’t shifted yet, but I can tell you have. That display in the hallway? That wasn’t just anger. That was power.” I blink. Twice. Yesterday, I was being bullied. Today, I’m flipping bullies across the room with supernatural strength. Life really knows how to pull a 180. “I didn’t mean to,” I say quietly. “They just... pissed off my wolf.” She nods like she completely understands. No judgment. Just acceptance. Then she turns and starts walking toward the door. “I’m a rogue,” she says casually, like that’s a normal thing to share in a school bathroom. “My parents left their pack years ago after someone tried to hurt my mom. We’ve been on the run ever since. I didn’t think there was a pack anywhere near here.” She pauses and glances over her shoulder. “You’re not a rogue, though. I can’t smell you at all. So... are you part of a pack?” “I... don’t know?” I answer honestly. She stops walking and faces me again, confused. “Wait. What do you mean you don’t know?” “I just found out I was a werewolf last night,” I admit, rubbing the back of my neck. “I don’t know anything about packs or rogues or... whatever this is.” Her eyes widen. “You’re serious?” I nod. She glances at the clock and sighs—definitely late now—but her curiosity outweighs the tardy slip. “Well, okay, quick crash course: a rogue is a wolf without a pack. Packs have a structure—Alphas, Betas, Gammas—like a hierarchy. Most wolves grow up in one, but you...” she eyes me again, “you don’t smell rogue, and yet you say you have no pack?” I shrug. “I’ve been in an orphanage my whole life. No one's ever said anything about me being a wolf. No one knew.” She tilts her head, studying me. “That doesn’t make sense. Every werewolf has a scent. But I still can’t smell anything from you.” Before I can even respond, Snow chimes in. “That’s because I’m blocking our scent,” she says coolly. “Didn’t know if we had any friends here.” I relay the message. “My wolf is... blocking it.” Nina’s eyes go wide. She gasps. “You can communicate with her already?” she asks, clearly shocked. “That’s rare. And scent blocking? That’s an alpha trait.” “Alpha?” I repeat, the word feeling heavy in my mouth. Nina opens her mouth to explain more, but we’ve reached her classroom. She glances at the door, then back at me. “If you want answers, meet me in the library after school. Four o’clock.” “Okay,” I say, still trying to wrap my head around everything. She gives me a small smile before slipping into her class. I turn and walk away, her words replaying over and over in my mind. Alpha. Power. Rogue. Shift. What am I? I’ve never talked to anyone at this school who didn’t bully me, and yet this random girl just offered to help me understand my new life. Maybe... maybe this won’t be so bad. As I walk down the hall toward my class, another thought bubbles up in my mind—something from last night. “Snow,” I whisper in my head, “Who was he?” Snow chuckles softly. “Mate.”
