Chapter 2

1051 Words
(Lex’s POV) Dream “Mommy, where are you?” a small child’s voice echoes through a beautiful garden filled with yellow daffodils. A tiny figure runs from behind a bush—and I freeze. The child looks about three years old, with white hair and bright purple eyes. Is that... me? A stunning woman stands up nearby, her long blonde hair shimmering in the sunlight. A breeze carries her scent toward me—apples and cinnamon. It smells warm, familiar... comforting. “Over here, Lexi!” the woman calls out, smiling. The child runs to her and throws her arms around her legs. “Where’s Daddy?” little-me asks. Just then, a massive white wolf walks out from behind the woman. I tense, about to shout— —but the sound of bones cracking fills the air, and in seconds, the wolf transforms into a tall man with white hair and purple eyes. “Right here, sweetie. Ready to play tag?” he says with a grin. He scoops up the child version of me, kisses the woman gently, then sets me down and takes off running after the giggling girl. The woman looks directly at me. Slowly, she walks toward me until she’s standing just a foot away. “My snowflake,” she says gently, her voice like a song, “it’s time to remember. Time to become who you were meant to be. I’m so sorry it had to end this way. Your father and I love you so much—and we’ll always be watching over you.” She reaches out as if to touch my face. “It’s time to wake up and meet your other half. She’ll guide you and help you through this. You’re not alone, sweetheart. We love you—our little snowflake.” End of Dream I bolt upright on my blanket, heart racing, breath sharp. What the hell was that? Did I just dream about my parents? I’ve never remembered them before. And now… now I feel like someone entirely different. Alexandria Isabella Moon. My parents are Alexander and Elizabeth Moon. I remember they loved each other so deeply and prided themselves on showing that, I smile—because now I know: I was loved. “You are loved, small one.” I whip my head around. “Who's there?” I scan the trees around my waterfall, wondering if someone’s found my secret place. “No, little one. My name is Snow, and I’m your wolf. Please don’t be afraid. You remember your father from the dream—he was a white wolf, just like you. You are one of us. I’m here to guide you, and from this moment on… you’ll never be alone again.” I blink, completely dumbfounded. A wolf? In my head? Am I hallucinating? “Not hallucinating,” Snow says calmly, almost amused. “In about fifteen minutes, when the clock strikes midnight, we’ll become one. The first shift is painful, but I’ll take as much of the pain as I can. You must promise me one thing…” “What’s that?” I ask cautiously. “After we shift… let me run. I’ve waited eighteen years for this moment. I have some serious energy to burn.” I should be panicking—but instead, I feel calm. Safe. Like I’ve finally found something I’ve been missing. Or someone. Then it begins. My body starts to tingle and itch—like my skin’s too tight. The temperature rises, and sweat starts dripping into my eyes. “I’m sorry, snowflake,” Snow says softly. “This will hurt. Let me take control.” “O-Okay,” I whisper, and suddenly, it feels like I’m being gently pushed to the back of my own mind. It’s a very odd feeling like a passenger in your mind. The itching turns to burning. My skin feels like it’s splitting open. I look down and watch, horrified, as tiny white hairs begin to push through my pores. A sharp pop—and I collapse to my knees, my leg twisted unnaturally. I scream. The pain is unbearable. I feel like I’m being torn apart from the inside out. My bones crack, shift, realign. My hands warp. My chest expands. My teeth feel like they are on fire as they elongate and end up buried into my bottom lip as I go to bite it to muffle the screams. And then— Silence. I pant heavily, tears still fresh in my eyes. “Snow… is it over?” “Yes, snowflake,” she replies. “Go to the water. Look.” I try to stand—but I’m on four legs. That alone would be enough to freak me out if I hadn’t already screamed my lungs out. Snow gently nudges me back and takes over again, guiding our body toward the water’s edge. We look down. A breathtaking white wolf stares back—my same bright purple eyes glowing under the moonlight. We look just like my father's wolf and I am filled with pride. “Beautiful,” I whisper aloud, stunned. Before I can react, Snow takes off into the forest, sprinting full speed. The wind rushes past us. The world is sharper now—I can see branches and rocks from yards away. I can hear the waterfall behind us, animals in the distance, the heartbeat of the forest itself. It feels… right. Like I’ve been waiting my whole life to feel this free. Eventually, Snow begins to slow. “Snowflake,” she says, breathing a little heavier, “I took on too much of your pain. I’m tired… we need to shift back. But first, I need you to do something.” “Anything,” I whisper. “Raise your head. Howl. Let him hear you. He’ll come for us.” Him? I don’t even have time to ask. Snow lifts our head to the sky and lets out a howl so powerful, it sends a shiver down my spine. The sound echoes through the mountains—wild, ancient, unrestrained. I feel darkness creeping into the corners of my vision. My body’s too weak. Too tired. Before I pass out, only one thought lingers in my mind— “Who is he?” Then, everything fades to black.
