Chapter 4

592 Words
(Colton’s POV) I drop to all fours as my bones crack and rearrange with a familiar rhythm. For most, shifting feels like dying—a slow, brutal breaking of every bone in your body. But after five years, I barely flinch. Blaze and I shift daily, and our bond is stronger than most Alpha-wolf pairs. He's not just part of me—he is me. As fur replaces skin and paws replace feet, Blaze takes over. “Colton,” he says in that steady voice of his, “something’s coming. A change. A big one.” I roll my eyes. He says that every other week. “You always say that, Blaze.” “And one day, I’ll be right.” With the patrol squad fully shifted and ready, we begin our run across the northern border. We pace ourselves, noses to the wind, eyes scanning for anything unfamiliar. For a pack, territory is sacred. It’s not just land—it’s our home, our responsibility, and our honor to protect. Rogues are our biggest threat. Exiled wolves with no pack, no loyalty, and often no sanity. They roam the no-man’s land between territories like ghosts. I already warned Miranda that she’s pushing the line. If she doesn’t back off, I will make her a rogue. Disrespecting an Alpha has consequences. I open a mindlink. “Jaxon. Anything suspicious?” “Not yet. We’re just reaching the halfway point.” Our territory is massive—easily the largest in North America. It stretches from Oregon to Washington, then across the Canadian border into the neighboring province. Our pack house is nestled deep in the Washington woods, protected by ancient enchantments and natural isolation. We rely on the forest to hide us from humans. Thousands of square miles of wilderness make it easier to keep our existence secret—and secure. Over 3,000 wolves live under my protection. As Alpha, that responsibility is heavy. My duty is etched into my bones. Blaze and I feel it in every step we take on this land. This territory is ours. I slow, shifting back into my human form as we near a stream. Thanks to Blaze, my shorts remain intact—one of the many perks of having a powerful wolf. But suddenly, Blaze whimpers. “What’s wrong, Blaze?” I ask. “She’s awake,” he says, his voice trembling. I freeze. “What?” Blaze doesn’t answer. And then— The howl. It cuts through the still night like thunder across a canyon. Raw. Pure. Ancient. Powerful. My legs buckle. My heart slams against my ribs like it’s trying to escape. I look up at the moon—full, massive, glowing like it’s watching me. I stumble, unsteady, as dizziness overtakes me. My wolf is howling inside me. My skin burns. My chest tightens. “What the hell is happening to me?” “Colton!” Blaze roars in my mind. “It’s her! The Moon Wolf! She’s awakened. You have to find her—now!” Moon Wolf. That word hits me like lightning. I’ve heard whispers, old prophecies, even rumors that most dismissed. A Moon Wolf is the rarest of our kind—born only once every few generations. Born under the light of the solstice moon. And she’s mine. The world tilts. I fall to my knees, gasping for breath as the darkness starts to swallow me whole. All I hear before it takes me is Blaze's final word, echoing through my mind like a vow— “Find her.”
