Chapter 26
Bella POV
I woke up slowly, feeling completely exhausted. I didn't remember falling asleep, but I must have been more tired than I realized.
As I opened my eyes, I noticed Brady sitting in the chair beside my bed. He looked like he hadn't slept at all.
“Brady?” I whispered.
His head snapped up, and he looked at me. “Hey, beautiful. How are you feeling?”
“Tired. What happened? Why are you looking at me like that?”
He stood up and walked over to the bed, sitting beside me. “There's something we need to talk about.”
I immediately became nervous. “What happened?”
He took my hand in his. “Last night, I came in to check on you. You were asleep, but Winter was awake.”
I frowned. “Winter was awake?”
He nodded. “She talked to me.”
My eyes widened. “Winter talked to you?”
“Yes.”
I could feel Winter stirring inside me.
Winter: He needs to tell you everything.
I swallowed. “What did she say?”
Brady looked down at our joined hands before looking back at me.
“She told me about something that will happen if you aren't marked.”
My heart started beating faster. “What?”
“She said that if you aren't marked within a year, she will start experiencing bloodlust.”
I stared at him. “Bloodlust?”
He nodded. “Every full moon.”
I felt Winter push closer to the surface.
Winter: It's true.
I took a shaky breath. “What does that mean?”
Brady hesitated. “She said that when the bloodlust takes over, you won't be able to control her.”
I felt cold all over. “What would she do?”
Brady looked at me with worry in his eyes. “She said she would go on a killing spree.”
I immediately sat up. “What?”
My voice cracked. “No. No, that can't happen.”
“I know.”
“Then we can't let it happen.”
Brady reached for me, but I pulled away slightly. “Bella..”
“No. I don't want to hurt anyone.”
Winter: I don't want to hurt you either.
Her voice sounded softer than usual. Winter: That's why the mark is important.
I closed my eyes. “Winter says the mark will stop it.”
Brady nodded. “She told me the same thing.”
I looked at him. “Then why haven't you marked me?”
He became completely still. I hadn't meant for the question to come out like that. “I didn't want to rush you,” he finally said. “You have been through enough. I wanted you to choose me because you wanted me, not because you were afraid of what would happen if you didn't.”
My heart softened. “Brady…”
“I love you, Bella. I don't want a mark to be something you feel forced into.”
I reached for his hand. “I don't want to hurt anyone either.”
“I know.”
“And I don't want Winter to be afraid of herself.”
He nodded. “She isn't evil, Bella.”
“I know.”
A growl came from inside me. Winter: We need our mate.
Storm: Yes, We need our mate
I almost laughed despite everything. “Winter and Storm says we need our mate.”
Brady smiled slightly. “I heard them.” Then his expression became serious again. “There is something else.”
“What?”
“The body my guards found last night.”
I immediately remembered what he had told Winter.
“The Lycan?”
“Yes.”
“What about it?”
“The marks on the body weren't normal.”
I frowned. “What do you mean?”
Brady leaned closer. “My guards know what Lycan attacks look like. They said these marks were different.”
“Different how?”
“They looked like they were made deliberately.”
A chill ran down my spine “Someone wanted it to look like a Lycan did it.”
Brady nodded. “Exactly.”
Winter suddenly pushed forward. Winter: I knew it.
I whispered, “Winter says she knew it.”
Brady looked toward me. “What else is she saying?”
“She thinks someone is trying to set us up.”
“I think so too.”
Suddenly, Storm's voice came through.
Storm: Bella.
I straightened. “What?”
Storm: Someone is outside.
Brady immediately stood. “What's wrong?”
I looked toward the door. “Storm says someone is outside.”
Brady's expression changed instantly. He moved in front of me.
“Stay here.”
I grabbed his arm. “No.”
He looked down at me. “I said stay here.”
“And I'm saying no.”
Before he could answer, a loud crash came from somewhere down the hallway.mBrady immediately reached for his weapon. Guards started shouting outside the room.mThen everything went silent.
Too silent.
Winter growled inside me. Winter: Something is here.
Storm answered her. Storm: And it knows we're here too.
I slowly got out of bed. Brady turned toward me.,“Bella, stay behind me.”
I looked toward the door. “Brady…”
“What?”
“I don't think whatever is outside came here for the body.”
He stared at me. “Then what did it come here for?”
I felt Winter take control of my senses for just a moment.,My eyes changed. My hearing became sharper. And then I smelled it. Lycan.
But there was something else mixed with it. Something dark.
Something I had never smelled before. I looked at Brady.
“It came for me.”
