Chapter 27

Brady POV

“It came for me.”

Those four words sent a chill through my entire body. I looked at Bella, trying to understand what she meant. “What do you mean it came for you?”

She didn't answer right away. Her eyes had changed. They were no longer completely Bella's eyes. I could see Winter looking through them, and behind her, I could feel Storm watching everything.

“Bella?”

She looked toward the door. “I can smell it.”

“What can you smell?”

“Another Lycan.”

I tightened my grip on my weapon. “Are you sure?”

Winter answered through Bella. Winter: “Yes. But it isn't like us.”

I stepped closer.

“What does that mean?”

Bella's expression changed. “It smells wrong.”

Before I could ask what she meant, there was another loud crash.

This time it came from the hallway directly outside our room. I moved in front of Bella.

“Stay behind me.”

“I can help.”

“I know you can, but I don't know what we're dealing with.”

She grabbed my arm.,“And I don't want you going out there alone.”

I looked into her eyes. She was scared. But she wasn't backing down. I smiled slightly. “Fine. We go together.”

She nodded. I opened the door slowly. The hallway was empty. Two of my guards were lying unconscious on the floor. I immediately rushed toward them.

“Are they alive?”

Bella crouched beside one of them. “Yes.”

I let out a breath. “Thank the Moon Goddess.”

Bella suddenly froze. “What?”

She looked at the floor. “Blood.”

I looked down. There was blood leading down the hallway. But it wasn't coming from my guards. It was dripping from the ceiling.

I slowly looked up. Nothing. Then Bella grabbed my arm.

“Brady.”

“What?”

“Don't move.”

I froze.,She pointed toward the wall. There was a shadow moving across it.mSomething was standing around the corner. I raised my weapon.

“Come out!”

Nothing happened. I took one step forward. The shadow disappeared.

“Stay here.”

I started walking toward the corner when Bella grabbed my hand. “No.”

“Bella…”

“It's too quiet.”

She was right. There should have been guards everywhere by now.

Instead, there was nothing.,Then we heard a voice.,“Bella.” She immediately stiffened. I looked around. “Who said that?”

The voice came again. “Bella.”

She shook her head. “I don't know.”

Winter growled. Winter: He is close.

Storm answered. Storm: Very close.

Suddenly, a figure stepped from the shadows. He was tall. His eyes were completely black. There were dark markings running along his arms and neck. I immediately stepped in front of Bella.

“Who are you?”

The stranger smiled. “I've been waiting for her.”

Bella stepped around me. “Why?”

His eyes locked onto hers. “Because you're not supposed to be here.”

I felt Bella's body tense. “What does that mean?”

The stranger laughed quietly. “You really don't know what you are, do you?”

Bella stared at him. “I know exactly who I am.”

“No.”

His smile disappeared. “You know who you were.”

Bella's breathing became uneven. I reached for her hand.

“Don't listen to him.”

The stranger looked at me. “And you're the reason she hasn't awakened yet.”

I stepped forward. “Don't you dare talk about my mate.”

He smiled again. “Mate?”

His eyes moved toward Bella. “That explains why she hasn't awakened.”

Bella looked confused. “What are you talking about?”

The stranger took a step closer. Winter suddenly roared inside Bella.

Winter: RUN!

Bella grabbed her head.,“Get out of my head!”

The stranger smiled. “I haven't even entered it yet.”

I felt my wolf pushing forward. “Get away from her.”

The stranger's eyes turned red. “You have no idea what you're protecting.”

I shifted partially, letting my claws come out. “Try me.”

The stranger disappeared. I looked around. “Where did he go?”

Bella suddenly screamed. I turned around. She was standing completely still. Her eyes had turned bright white. “Bella!”

I grabbed her shoulders. She looked at me, but her voice wasn't hers. “He knows where the first gate is.”

I froze. “What gate?”

Bella's eyes returned to normal. She collapsed against me.,I caught her before she hit the ground. “Bella!”

She looked up at me, terrified.“I don't know what just happened.”

I pulled her close.

“It's okay.”

“No, Brady.”

She shook her head. “He knows something about me.”

I looked down the empty hallway.,The stranger was gone. But he had left us with one warning. And somehow, I knew this wasn't the last time we would see him.
