Chapter 9
Reman's POV
Before she could walk out the door, I finally accepted her rejection. I had hoped that by accepting it, she would feel the pain of the mate bond snapping. I wanted her to suffer the way I was suffering. But... nothing. She didn't even flinch. She didn't look back.
She walked away without a second glance. I stared after her in disbelief. She had always told me she couldn't live without me. She used to say I was her whole world. I guess she had been stronger than I ever gave her credit for. Or maybe… I had broken her so completely that there was nothing left to feel.
The heavy doors closed behind her.
A loud click echoed through the room as the queen walked over and locked them herself. She turned toward me, her eyes cold and unreadable.
"You do know she's gone, right?" she asked. "She isn't coming back, Reman. Now I want answers."
The king folded his arms across his chest. "Who is your alpha? And why does he have you and the others spying on us?"
My stomach twisted into knots. These were the questions I had been dreading. I had two choices. Tell them the truth...
Or die. I wasn't ready to die. Taking a long, shaky breath, I lowered my head.
"My alpha is Alpha Simon," I admitted quietly. "For some reason, he hates your kingdom. I honestly don't know why."
I looked up at them. "I hate him."
The words surprised even me, but once they started, I couldn't stop. "He bullies everyone. He steals from his own people. He walks up to guards and punches them in the face, saying it makes them tougher."
I shook my head. "No... he does it because he enjoys watching people suffer. Everyone is too scared to fight back because if they do..." I swallowed hard. "...he kills them."
The room fell silent. "I'm not going back there," I whispered. "And you can't make me."
The king and queen exchanged a glance. Neither of them spoke. Their eyes glazed over slightly as they mind-linked each other. After several long moments, they both looked back at me.
"Oh," the king said calmly, "but you are going back."
My heart nearly stopped.
"You see," he continued, "Simon gave us two months before he planned to make his move. We intend to use that time."
He stepped closer "When you return, tell Alpha Simon that the king and queen would like to invite him to dinner in two weeks."
I frowned in confusion. "He may bring anyone he wishes."
The queen smiled faintly, though there wasn't an ounce of warmth behind it. "We'll sit down together... and have a conversation."
The king nodded. "He'll know exactly what we're talking about."
I blinked. None of this made any sense to me. But if delivering a message meant I wasn't being executed or thrown into a dungeon… I'd gladly do it.
"When should I leave?" I asked carefully.
"If I leave right now, Simon will know something is wrong. I always sneak out later at night."
A new worry hit me. "What about the other spies? Won't they warn him?"
The queen gave a small smile. "I doubt they'll have the opportunity."
The king answered this time. "They're being rounded up as we speak."
My eyes widened. Every single spy...Caught.
"Go back to your room," the king ordered. "Leave tonight just like you always do."
His voice became dangerously cold. "If you try to run..."
"You will die." "If you betray us..." "You will die."
"There will not be a second chance." "If you fail to do exactly what we've asked..." "You will pay with your life."
A chill ran down my spine. No matter what happened...
Death seemed to be waiting for me. If I betrayed the king...
I'd die. If I betrayed Simon… He'd kill me himself.
I was trapped between two monsters, and somehow I had to survive them both. I forced myself to nod.
"I'll return to my room and rest for a while. If I show up nervous, Simon will know something is wrong." I looked at both of them. "Thank you... for giving me a chance to prove myself."
The king simply nodded. I turned and walked out of the room.
The moment my bedroom door closed behind me, I leaned against it and let out the breath I'd been holding. My hands were shaking.
"How the hell am I supposed to pull this off?" I muttered to myself. If Simon suspected even for a second that something was wrong… I'd be dead before I could explain. I dragged both hands through my hair and let out a frustrated groan. "Shit..."
I had managed to get myself into the worst situation imaginable. And somehow...I had to survive it.
