Chapter 2
The entire drive home felt like torture. Every second that passed felt like another piece of my heart was being ripped away. Jora tried talking to me a few times, but I could barely hear her. My mind was stuck on one thing. Reman. My mate. The man who promised me forever.,I kept replaying everything he had ever told me.
I love you, Bora. You’re the only one I want. I would never betray you. Those words used to make me feel safe. Now they felt like a cruel joke.
“Bora,” Jora said softly.
I glanced over at her. “What?”
“You need to breathe.”
I looked away, gripping the steering wheel tighter. “I’m fine.”
She gave me a look. “No, you’re not.”
I didn’t answer because she was right. I wasn’t fine. My wolf wasn’t fine. Storm had been quiet ever since the pain stopped, but I could feel her sadness. She was hurt. A mate bond was supposed to be sacred. It was supposed to be something nobody could break. But Reman had broken it., Or at least, that’s what it felt like.
“What if it’s true?” I whispered.
Jora looked at me. “What?”
“What if he really did it?”
The words hurt coming out. “What if I get there and I see him with someone else?”
Jora reached over and placed her hand on my arm. “Then you’ll know the truth.”
I swallowed the lump in my throat. “And what if the truth destroys me?”
She was quiet for a moment. “Then we pick up the pieces.”
I wanted to believe her. I really did. But right now, I felt like I was already broken. When we finally reached the pack territory, my hands were shaking. The lights from the pack house came into view, and my stomach twisted. There it was. The place where I thought I belonged.
The place where I thought I would build my future. I parked the car away from the house.
“We don’t want anyone hearing us,” I whispered.
Jora nodded. Neither of us shifted. We quietly made our way toward the house. Every step felt heavier than the last.
The closer we got, the stronger the bond became. Then I felt it.
Her scent. A female. My heart dropped. No. No, no, no.
Storm growled softly inside my mind.
“Bora…”
I closed my eyes. “I know.”
The smell was coming from our room. My room. Our room. The place where he promised me we would start our family. Jora looked at me, and I could see the anger building in her eyes.
“Bora…”
I shook my head. “I need to see.”
She nodded. We moved quietly through the house. Nobody stopped us. Nobody expected us. Why would they? Reman thought I was still gone. He thought he had time. When we reached the bedroom door, I froze. My hand hovered over the handle. Part of me wanted to run.
Part of me wanted to pretend Storm was wrong. Part of me wanted to walk away and continue believing the man I loved was still the same man. But I couldn’t. I needed the truth. Taking a deep breath, I opened the door. And my world shattered. Reman was there. In our bed. With another female. For a moment, nobody moved. Nobody spoke. The only sound was my own heartbeat. Reman’s eyes widened when he saw me. “Bora…”
The female beside him smirked then quickly pulled the blankets closer.
I stared at him. I waited for him to explain. I waited for him to tell me this wasn’t what it looked like. I waited for him to be the man I believed he was. But he didn’t. Instead, he looked guilty. That hurt more than anything.
“Bora, wait..”
I laughed. A broken, painful laugh.
“Wait?” My voice shook. “That’s what you have to say?”
He immediately got out of bed. “It isn’t what you think.”
I stared at him. “Then tell me what it is.”
Silence. That silence answered everything. Storm let out a painful whimper. I felt tears burning my eyes, but I refused to let them fall.
“How long?”
Reman looked away.
“How long have you been lying to me?”
“Bora”
“No.”
My voice became stronger. “Don’t say my name like you still have the right.”
The pain in my chest returned, but this time it wasn’t from the bond.
It was from my heart breaking. “I waited for you.” I shook my head.
“I defended you.” “I stayed when everyone else left.” “I chose you over my own family.”
His expression changed. For the first time, he looked ashamed.
But it was too late.
“You promised me pups,” I whispered. “You promised me a future.”
Reman stepped toward me. “Bora, please let me explain.”
I stepped back. “No.”
The female finally spoke. “Reman, who is she?”
I looked at her. She didn’t even know. That hurt. I looked back at my mate. “You never told her about me?”
Reman said nothing. I smiled sadly. “Of course you didn’t.”
Jora stepped beside me. “Bora, we need to leave.”
I nodded slowly. But before I turned away, I looked at Reman one last time. “I hope she was worth it.”
His face fell. “Bora”
I walked away. Because if I stayed another second, I wasn’t sure what I would do. The man I loved had betrayed me. The man I trusted had broken our bond. And now I had to figure out how to live without the future I thought I had. As we walked out of the pack house, Storm finally spoke.
“He was never worthy of us.”,
I wiped away a tear. “I know.”
But knowing didn’t make it hurt any less. Because losing a mate wasn’t just losing a person. It was losing the life you thought you were going to have.
