Chapter 4
Bora's POV
Morning came far too quickly. I hadn't slept much. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Ramen standing there, begging for forgiveness while another woman's scent lingered all over him. His tears had looked convincing, but something inside me refused to believe them. My wolf had been restless all night.
"He lied," she growled.
"I know."
"He has lied before."
"I know."
"He'll do it again."
Those words settled heavily in my chest. Jora sat on the edge of the other bed, watching me quietly. "You didn't sleep."
I let out a tired laugh. "I don't think I ever will again."
She walked over and handed me a cup of coffee. "We finish this job today."
I nodded.
" And then we disappear."
I smiled weakly. "That sounds like a good plan."
By noon, we were making our way toward Simons. We had to be careful. Simon had eyes everywhere, and if he discovered we had stayed away overnight, he'd immediately become suspicious. As we slipped inside through one of the servant entrances, everything seemed... quiet. Too quiet. Guards stood outside the throne room with tense expressions. Servants rushed through the halls without speaking.
Something had happened. Jora caught the arm of one of the maids.
"What's going on?"
The young woman looked around before lowering her voice. "The king in a rage."
My stomach tightened. "Why?"
"They say someone has been stealing information from him."
Jora and I exchanged worried glances. That was impossible.
Neither of us had been feeding anyone information. The maid hurried away before we could ask anything else.
"I don't like this," Jora whispered.
"Neither do I."
The massive doors to the throne room opened.
Simon stood near the windows with his hands clasped behind his back.,No smile.,No greeting. Only silence.
"Bora."
His voice echoed through the room. "You've been gone longer than expected."
"My apologies," I answered, keeping my head lowered. "Travel was delayed."
His eyes narrowed. "And what have you learned?"
The familiar lie sat on the tip of my tongue. "The elders have been discussing border patrols," I said smoothly. "There has been concern about rogues moving through neighboring territories."
Simon watched me for what felt like forever. Finally, he nodded.
"Very well."
Relief washed over me. Until he spoke again. "Ramen made quite the mistake yesterday."
Every muscle in my body froze. "He told me you returned unexpectedly."
I slowly looked up. Simon smiled. It wasn't a kind smile. It was the smile of a man who enjoyed watching people suffer.
"I hope his little... accident... doesn't interfere with your work."
I forced myself to remain expressionless. "It won't."
"Good."
He stepped closer. "I still have plans for you."
A chill ran down my spine. "I'll remember that."
"You'd better."
He dismissed us with a wave of his hand.
The second we were outside the throne room, I finally released the breath I'd been holding. "He knows something," Jora whispered.
"I know."
"But how much?"
"I don't know."
For the first time since becoming Simon's spy...I was afraid.
Ramen's POV
Simon knew.
The moment I walked into his office, I knew I was in trouble. He didn't even bother looking at me.
"You've been careless."
"I know."
"You let Bora catch you."
"Yes."
His fist slammed onto the desk. "You were given one simple job."
"I understand."
"No."
His icy eyes met mine. "You don't."
He slowly walked around the desk until he stood directly in front of me. "If Bora walks away before I have everything I need..." His voice dropped to a whisper. "I'll kill you."
A cold sweat rolled down my back. "It won't happen again."
"It had better not."
He leaned closer. I'll Keep her under control."
"I will."
"And if you can't..."
He smiled. "I'll find someone who can."
As I left his office, my hands trembled. For the first time in years...
I wasn't afraid of losing Bora. I was afraid of Simon. d deep down, I couldn't shake the feeling that Bora was already slipping beyond my reach.
