Chapter 5 Bora's POV After I left Simon, we headed back to the castle. We only had one more mission to complete, and then we were done. After that, we would disappear. Jora was planning to go somewhere far away. I didn't want to know where. If I was caught and questioned, I wanted to be able to honestly say I had no idea where she was. It was safer that way. We promised to stay in touch somehow. The plan was simple. We would return to the kingdom, spend a couple of weeks acting like everything was normal, then vanish without a trace. Neither of us planned on returning to Simon's pack. Deep down, I had a feeling Simon already intended to get rid of us. No witnesses. Those were the words he had always lived by. The drive back to the kingdom was quiet as we rehearsed our story over and over. "Our families are doing better. They found a pack willing to help them." It sounded believable enough. I just hoped everyone else believed it too. The only thing left that I had to do before disappearing was reject Ramen. Then I would finally be free. As we drove through the castle gates, my heart hammered against my ribs so hard it almost hurt. I felt like it would burst right out of my chest. "Bora, calm down," Jora whispered. "If you keep looking this nervous, they're going to think we've been up to something." She was right. I took a slow breath and forced myself to relax. I wasn't nervous because I thought we'd fail. I was nervous because the plan was finally happening. Soon... I'd be gone. "Bora," Jora said quietly, "I need to tell you something. Once we're inside, come to my room. I don't want anyone overhearing us." I simply nodded. We parked the car and climbed out.The guards at the entrance smiled and greeted us. "Bora," one of them called. "How's your aunt? Is she feeling any better?" I forced a smile. "Yes. She's doing much better. Another pack agreed to take her in and help take care of her. Her family found a safe place too. That's why we came back early." The guard Henry smiled warmly. "That's wonderful news. Go get some rest. We'll catch up later." "Thanks." Jora and I walked through the castle doors. The maids were already hard at work, dusting every surface and mopping the polished floors until they practically sparkled. The castle was so spotless you could eat right off the floor. Without saying another word, I followed Jora to her bedroom. The moment the door shut behind us, I dropped onto her bed. She sat beside me, but she couldn't meet my eyes. After several long moments, she finally spoke. "I don't know how to say this, Bora…" My stomach dropped. "I'm leaving tonight." I stared at her. "What?" "I overheard Simon talking to one of his guards. They're planning to get rid of me." My blood ran cold. "They're going to frame me for something and blame everything on me, before they kill me. If I don't leave tonight... I'll never get out alive." The room suddenly felt too small. "I hope you escape too," she whispered. "Because Simon won't stop until we're both dead." I couldn't believe what I was hearing. She was leaving. Tonight. "I'm leaving everything behind," she continued, tears filling her eyes. "I don't have another choice. I'll tell the guards I'm going for a run." She swallowed hard. "Then I'll disappear." She looked down at the clothes she was wearing. "I'll leave these behind. I'll cut myself and leave blood all over them. They'll think rogues attacked me... or maybe a wild bear." Everything was happening so fast. In just a few hours...I'd be completely alone. For two weeks, I'd have no one. But I understood. If she stayed...Simon would have her murdered. I stood up and walked over to her. Grabbing both of her shoulders, I looked her straight in the eyes. "Jora... you have to leave.” She started crying. "Get as far away as you possibly can.", I took a shaky breath. "When you finally stop somewhere... mindlink me if you can."."If you can't..." I continued, "buy a burner phone. Call me just long enough to tell me you're alive.",I squeezed her hands. "But don't tell me where you are. If Simon captures me, I can't betray you if I honestly don't know." "After you call..." I forced myself to smile. "Throw the phone away." She nodded through her tears. We sat together on the bed in complete silence. I was about to lose my best friend because of Simon. Neither of us knew where life would take us after tonight. We talked about all the places we dreamed of seeing one day. Maybe mountains, maybe the ocean. Maybe another kingdom. Maybe somewhere neither of us had ever heard of. Neither of us truly knew where we'd end up. As the sun slowly disappeared below the horizon, the room grew darker. It was time. I fought with everything inside me not to cry. "Listen," I said softly. "Tie a small bag of money around your ankle where no one will notice it." She nodded. "Take every dollar you can." "And promise me you'll eat." "Rest whenever you can." "Drink plenty of water." ,"You have to survive." That was when she completely broke down.,She threw her arms around me, sobbing.,"Come with me," she begged. "Please, Bora." "We can leave together." I held her tightly. "I can't." "My job isn't finished." "I still have to reject Ramen." "And once that's done...",I smiled sadly..,"I'll call Simon one last time.".."I'll tell him I'm done."."Then I'll block his number..." "...and disappear forever.",I pulled away and wiped the tears from her face.,"You need to go." "Before you change your mind." She nodded.,Without another word, she walked out of the room. I slowly made my way back to mine.,Opening my bedroom window, I climbed onto the roof that overlooked the front of the castle. It had always been my favorite place to think. From there, I watched Jora make her way toward the woods. She stopped to speak with a couple of guards. One smiled at her.,"Be careful." "I will." She took a few more steps before looking back. Our eyes met one final time. She gave me the smallest smile. Then she turned... ...and disappeared into the forest.,I knew exactly what she was going to do. She'd head toward the border. She'd cut herself and cover the clothes she'd leave behind with blood. Everyone would believe she had been killed by rogues... or torn apart by a wild bear.,They would mourn her.,And I would mourn her too. At least until it was finally my turn to leave. Until then... I had to play my part. I had to smile. I had to lie. And above all else… I had to make sure no one suspected a thing.
