First Day Part 1

Chapter 3 First Day (Part 1)    I really didn’t want to be here.   I took a deep breath as I stepped on to the paved path to the school entrance. I had no choice but to go on in and get through the day.   Bella had wanted to take me to my first day, but she had work and I didn’t want her to miss her shift. She was going through so much with working two jobs and trying to finish school in the evenings. I didn’t know how she did it. She seemed to have it all together and I couldn’t help but fall apart all the time. There was a hole inside that I couldn’t seem to patch up as much as I tried.   Being here away from all my friends was lonely. I missed them, they were the ones I talked to about all of my problems, everything that happens in life. I needed them more than I could explain. I had seen them at the funerals. They had gotten permission to come, my teachers, the dean, they had all been there, but I hadn’t been in the right mind set to do anything about it.   Now being here after everything, feels more like a punishment than anything else. I needed my friends now. I also knew I would probably never see them again.   “Hey there.”   The masculine voice snapped me out of the thought of the past, and I looked behind me to see the guy I had met last week, in the same spot.   “Looks like your about to bolt.” He said, smiling.   “I might be debating it.” I answered, shrugging my shoulders.   He nodded his head. “Jayce McKinney, we met last week.”   “Ivy Matthews, I remember you. Your dad was one of the trustees interviewing me.” I replied, giving him the best smile, I could muster up.   Jayce nodded his head. “I heard you’re a genius.”   I laughed.   “What’s funny?” He asked me, confusion clear on his face.   “It’s just weird to hear someone say that, especially someone that I don’t know.”   “Well, that means we just need to get to know each other, don’t we?” Jayce winked at me.   I was about to make a comment, but I stopped myself. I turned to look at the doors of the school again, I had to go through them. “I should go find my first class.” I replied and started to walk towards the door again.   “Wait, I help you. My dad requested I help you through your first day.” Jayce yelled, catching up to me again.   “You don’t need to do that. I can get by on my own.” I replied, looking at him from the side.   “I want to help. Not just because my dad told me too. You…are you okay?” He asked hesitantly.   I looked at him, a bit shocked at his question. That was…direct.   “I’m fine.” I said a bit harshly.   He took a step back.   “I’m sorry I didn’t mean too…” I let that trial off and turned and walked into the building as quickly as I could. I couldn’t believe I had snapped like that. What was wrong with me? I needed to get a grip.   I looked up to see the hallway full of student, talking to each other, laughing, walking to class.   My mind flashed back.   “Ivy wait!”   I looked behind me to see Stone and Sofia Carson walking towards me.   I smiled at the twins. “Hey guys!”   Stone threw an arm around my shoulder and looked down at me with a wolfish smile. “How’s it going girl?”   “Leave the girl alone Stone, she not interested in you.” Sofia told her brother, punching him in the arm.   “That’s not true, right?” Stone said, trying to make puppy dog eyes at me.   “Well…. she’s not wrong.” I said, shrugging out of his hold.   “That hurt my feelings.” He said, taking a step back.   “And Stone gets rejected again! What this, the 3rd time this morning?” Ziva asked walking up to us.   “How did you know?” He asked, shock clearly displayed on his face.   “It was a guess…kind of… I saw Vanessa laughing in the cafeteria and she filled me in on what you were up to this morning.” Ziva answered. “What? This is not good for my image.” Stone said crossing his arm and huffing.   We all laughed at him and shook our heads.   “Ivy, have you seen Georgie?” Ziva asked me. Georgie was my roommate and the most boy crazy girl you could meet.   “She told me she was going to stop by the boy’s dorm before coming in, Roman leaves for the away game today, so she needed to say bye.”   “Of course, she did.” Ziva laughed.   “Ladies… and Stone. Don’t you have classes to get to, instead of loitering the halls?”   I looked behind me to see Mr. Rosario, our history teacher standing behind us.   “Hi Mr. Rosario.” I said, smiling at my favourite teacher.   “Ms. Matthews.”   “Chill out Mr. Rosario, we have time before class starts. We were just catching up.” Ziva replied.   “I think you ladies can think of doing something better than watching Mr. Carson fail at procuring another date.” Mr. Rosario shrugged and walked past us, stopping for a moment, “Don’t be late to class!”   We all laughed and watched Stone’s face turn red.   “Man, Stone even the teachers know!” Ziva said, laughing harder.   I shook my head at my crazy friends and laughed at Ziva’s comment. My friends were crazy, but we always have a blast.     “Excuse me? Ivy, right?”   My mind snapped out of the past as I tried to focus on the girl in front of me. Her mouth was moving but I couldn’t make out the words. She had short red hair and was a few feet shorter than me, but the one thing that set her apart from everyone else, had to be here eyes. She had the brightest blue eyes I had ever seen. I would say they seemed almost clear.   “Ivy? It is Ivy…right?” The girl asked me again.   I shook my head and said, “Yes.”   “Hi! I’m April!” She said in an extremely cheerful voice.   “Hi April…”   “I represent the students in the IB program or the HIP program. Mr. Peters informed me about you and your records! You’re going to make a great addition to our programs and definitely help boost our international standing! I’ll show you around, we have the same schedule apart from languages and history. ” She explained to me.   I tried to smile at her. I hoped it came across as a smile, but I guess it didn’t matter. April looped her arm around mine and pulled me down the hall.   “So, from what I understand, you speak 5 fluent languages? I only speak 2, English and French. I do want to learn Spanish! See I grew up in Canada and the official languages are English and French. When we moved here I decided to continue with French, but I think I need to expand my knowledge, so I took Spanish this semester!” April said in what seemed to be one breathe.   I turned my head and tried smiling again.    “What about you? How do you know so many languages? Does the rest of your family speak all 5 languages too?” She asked.   I took a breath. I couldn’t freak out whenever someone asked me a question related to my past. I needed to get a grip on my emotions.   “Umm…my father was an American diplomat, and my mother was Indian but grew up in France. We grew up speaking English, Hindi and French. The boarding school I…umm…went to was in Switzerland, so were taught German and Italian. My umm… my parents were big believers in leading by example. So, they learned German and Italian. We had umm… we would speak a different language at dinner every night.” I told April. She was loud and cheery, but she also seemed sweet, actually reminded me of Georgie a bit.   “That’s so cool! So, you can help me with Spanish?” She asked smiling.   I nodded my head.   “Cool! And I also need to hear everything about this boarding school you went to! I mean it has to be different than private school, right? I couldn’t imagine having to live with some of the people that go here. And you have to invite me over to meet your family! I could really use a night of speaking even French! My parents only speak English…” April trailed off.   I was trying to listen to everything she was saying, but at the mention of my family I flashed back through the last couple of months of my life. I took a deep breathe, I couldn’t have a break down here, not now. It was the beginning of the day and I had to get through so much still.   “We are here! Our first class is English.”   I looked up and saw we were outside a classroom.   “This is our homeroom.” April informed me. “Come on you can sit by me. Usually Jasper sits by me, he’s my best friend bye the way! But today we’ll stick together! I know how lonely and scary first days can be!” “Thank you April.” I was genuinely grateful for that. It was hard being a new student and add the fact that in a normal school you would be considered a nerd, wouldn’t help.     She waved her free hand, dismissing the comment and pulled me inside and to our seats. I was starting to feel not so out of place with April. We took out seats and I opened my backpack to pull out a notebook and pencil.   “Hey there beautiful.”   It was Jayce McKinney again, taking a seat right behind me.   I was a bit shocked to see this guy in an honors class, he seemed like a typical jock, but I guess I should be judging anyone.   He leaned forward over his desk. “It’s nice to see you again.”
