CHAPTER 6: SUMMONED

942 Words
The message arrived right as the sun dipped low. Really brief. Straight to the point. Can’t misinterpret it. “The Alpha wants to see you.” The guard was gone before Alyssa could react. Didn’t hang around, didn’t need to. Everyone nearby had heard already. She stood there for a second, fingers curling tight at her sides not scared, just eager. He fell for it, her wolf whispered, smug. Alyssa almost smiled. “Of course he did.” She took her time. Hurrying would ruin things. People desperate for power look weak. So instead, she washed her hands, adjusted her clothes, tidied her hair blending effort and ease. Control mattered more than anything now. When she walked back into the pack house, the air felt thick with tension. Word spread fast here. Whispered rumors chased her down the hall. “She’s been summoned.” “What did she do this time?” “What’s got him so hooked?” Alyssa tuned it all out, crossing polished floors and heading deeper inside. Straight toward him. The guards flanking his office didn’t stop her. Just opened the door, no questions. That alone spoke volumes. She stepped inside. Door clicked shut. No sound. No movement. He was at the window, back turned, hands locked behind him. Waiting. Not moving, not speaking. Alyssa didn’t break the silence, didn’t step closer, didn’t say a word. Just waited. The seconds dragged until finally “You’re bold.” His voice shattered the quiet. Low, tightly controlled. He still wouldn’t face her. Alyssa tipped her head, calm. “So I’ve been told.” Another pause, and then “You caused quite a scene today.” He turned at last. Slow. Eyes met hers, and Alyssa felt it pressure, intensity. Only this time, the room was empty. Nothing between them but space. “You hurt one of my warriors,” he said. His tone sounded calm, but there was warning buried in it. Alyssa didn’t blink. “He spoke out of turn.” Something flickered in the Alpha’s eyes, almost amused. “You think that justifies it?” “It’s just true,” Alyssa said. Silence stretched. He moved, slow and deliberate, crossing the distance. Alyssa stayed put. Every instinct inside her screamed don’t challenge, look down, step back. But she didn’t do any of it. He stopped close. Too close for comfort. “You don’t fear me.” Not a question. Alyssa held his gaze, steady. “No.” He studied her like she was a puzzle, maybe dangerous, something he hadn't figured out yet. “Everyone fears me.” Her lips twitched into the hint of a smile. “Maybe that’s your problem.” Wild thing to say. In most places, she’d be punished. But not here not now. His eyes shifted. Now he was interested. Really interested. “Careful,” he murmured, voice lower, darker. “You’re walking a thin line.” Alyssa leaned in, just enough for him to notice. “Good.” She whispered it. “I like dangerous things.” That got his attention for real. Shadows flickered in his eyes, jaw clenched. He reacted for the first time his hand lifted, gripping her chin. Firm, commanding. Not painful, but not gentle either. “Do you know who you’re playing with?” His voice was a threat breathing life. Alyssa felt her pulse jump, but she didn’t let anything show. “Yes. I do.” A lie. And not. She knew what he was, but not what he’d become. His grip tightened, testing her. Seeing if she’d break. She didn’t flinch. He let his thumb brush her skin a tiny gesture, but it sent a strange jolt through her. Flicker. Spark. Her wolf stirred, confused but alert. Careful. He saw everything. Of course he did. His stare deepened, a little darker. “You’re hiding something,” he said quiet. Alyssa let her breath slow, controlled. “Aren’t we all?” More like a dare than an answer. The Alpha searched her face trying to peel away every layer. “You came here for a reason. Not just for attention.” Alyssa said nothing. This was it. The moment. She had to tread carefully, right on the edge between honesty and manipulation. “I want power.” Not exactly a lie. He relaxed his grip a bit, but didn’t let her go. “Power has a price.” Alyssa didn’t look away. “I’ll pay.” Another long silence, heavy and buzzing. At last, he let her go, but stayed close. “Be careful what you wish for,” he warned. “Once you step into my world…” His voice got darker, lower. “You can’t leave.” Alyssa’s heart hammered. Good. That meant she was exactly where she should be. She didn’t back down. “Then it’s a good thing,” she whispered, letting a smile curl her lips. “I don’t plan on leaving.” The silence returned. Something changed between them. Not trust not yet. But recognition, maybe. Two predators, circling, testing. Neither ready to yield. The Alpha stepped back. Gave her space, but didn’t shake off the tension. “Go.” Dismissed, but not rejected. Alyssa didn’t hesitate. She moved toward the door. Just before she touched the handle “Little wolf.” She stopped. Looked over her shoulder. His gaze locked on hers, darker now, burning through her. “Don’t disappoint me.” Alyssa smiled, just a little. “I won’t.” This time, she meant it. Because the game had changed. He wasn’t just watching anymore. He was finally in it. And that made everything so much more dangerous.
