CHAPTER :5 THE FIRST SPARK

765 Words
The pack’s courtyard buzzed with life. People shouted over one another. Someone laughed. Warriors were sparring on one end. Little cliques scattered everywhere whispering, staring, judging. And today Alyssa wanted their attention. She walked out into the open space, not with a dramatic entrance, not making a scene. She just made it so no one could ignore her. Her steps were slower now. Purposeful. Deliberate. She measured every move, every glance. She left fragility behind. Now, she wore her confidence like armor. They’re all watching us, her wolf murmured. Alyssa didn’t bother answering. She felt it eyes tracking her, whispers swelling. Let them look. She wasn’t here for them. She raised her eyes, straight to the platform above the courtyard. There he stood. The Alpha. He stood with a few elders. Looked casual, almost at ease, but somehow owned the whole space just by standing there. Even from down here, she felt him. That steady pressure people couldn’t quite name danger and gravity all at once. Then maybe he felt her attention. His eyes found her. Their eyes locked. For a second, everything went silent. Alyssa refused to look away. She didn’t lower her gaze. Didn’t break. She held it. A challenge. The Alpha’s face darkened just a little interest, recognition, maybe a hint of possessiveness. Good. She walked forward. Calm, controlled, like she belonged. More whispers now: “Why’s she acting like that?” “Didn’t she get dumped?” “She’s lost it…” Let them say whatever they wanted. This was part of the plan. She got near the training grounds. Of course, one of her ex’s friends stepped into her path. Predictable. “You shouldn’t be here,” he sneered. “This isn’t a place for rejects.” Alyssa stopped. Tilted her head. Studied him, calm as ever. “You talk a lot,” she said. He scoffed. “Someone has to. You’re a joke…” He barely got the words out. Quicker than anyone expected, Alyssa grabbed his wrist, twisted until something popped not broken, but not gentle. The sound echoed. He crumpled, gasping. Gasps broke out across the crowd. Alyssa leaned down. She didn’t raise her voice. “Be careful. I’m not who I was.” She let go. Kept walking like nothing happened. Silence trailed after her. Awkward, heavy, a little shocked. Then the energy shifted. Respect. Wariness. Curiosity. Exactly what she came for. She looked up again. Right at him. The Alpha hadn’t moved. But his eyes? Different now. Sharper. Interested. He watched her. Didn’t pretend not to. Alyssa let a small smile curve her lips. Good. She crossed over to the perfect spot close enough to be seen, far enough to keep the tension. She stopped. Turned her body to face the training, pretending to be just another observer. But she could feel him. His attention. Like gravity between her shoulder blades. Her wolf stirred. He sees us. Alyssa breathed in, slow. Without glancing up, she reached for a water flask. Lifted it, sipped unhurried, unbothered. Completely casual. And completely intentional. Because he wasn’t missing a thing. The slide of her throat when she swallowed. Her hand around the flask. The way she stood relaxed, but alert. She wasn’t putting on a show. And that made it impossible to look away. Up on the platform, the Alpha shifted. An elder leaned in to whisper something. The Alpha ignored him. He didn’t look away. Didn’t lose focus. Alyssa’s smile grew, just a hint. He was hooked. And she wasn’t finished. She turned. This time she met his eyes, no hesitation, just open challenge. A silent dare. Tension snapped the moment to life. Something possessive sparked in his expression. Something dangerous. And just for a heartbeat, he dipped his chin. Barely there. But she saw it. Acknowledgment. Not Alpha to pack member. Predator, recognizing prey. Or maybe, something just as deadly. Alyssa’s pulse thundered. Quiet victory. Small, but hers. She broke the stare first, not out of submission, but holding the reins. She started to walk off. He was still watching, wanting more. Behind her, the courtyard exploded with new whispers. She ignored them. Because the reaction that mattered? She’d already claimed it. High above, the Alpha finally spoke to the elders. Low, almost thoughtful. “Who taught her to move like that?” No one answered. No one really knew. Which made him watch her even more closely. “She’s not broken,” he said quietly. And she wasn’t. She was turning into something else entirely. And he wanted to find out Just how far she’d go.
