CHAPTER 3: THE FIRST MOVE

944 Words
The pack felt different that morning. Not louder, not quieter just off, like the air itself was sizing everyone up. Alyssa crossed the main grounds with her chin up. Every step measured, every movement steady. On the outside, she looked unbreakable. Inside, her wolf kept watch, scanning every face for weakness. They’re watching. “I know,” Alyssa replied, without a sound. The whispers trailed behind her like a shadow: “They say he rejected her…” “No, she caught them…” “Her own sister…” “How embarrassing…” She didn’t flinch. No glances, no changes in her breathing. This was exactly what she expected. Humiliation. Pity. Judgment. Let them talk. Let them believe she was broken. It would just make what comes next hit harder. Her gaze landed on the pack house. Big, commanding, almost untouchable. Alpha territory. Her target. Her pulse sped up, not from fear from anticipation. Today, she was going to walk into his world and make sure he saw her. “Careful,” came a voice. Alyssa didn’t need to look to know who it was. Her ex. She stopped. Turned, slow and steady. He stood a few feet away, looking tense. Guilt flickered in his eyes, but honestly, that’s nothing. Never enough. “You shouldn’t be out here alone,” he said, keeping his voice low. “People are talking.” Alyssa tipped her head. “Let them.” His jaw clenched. “Alyssa, I mean it. You need to lay low for a while. At least until things settle down.” There it was. Not concern control. Alyssa smiled. Just a touch. It made him uncomfortable because this smile wasn’t soft. It was cold, sharp. “You don’t get to tell me what to do anymore,” she said. His face darkened. “I’m still trying to protect you.” She moved closer, close enough for him to see how empty her eyes were now. Close enough for him to feel it. “Protect me?” she whispered, voice soft but deadly. “You lost that right the moment you touched her.” He flinched. Good. “I made a mistake,” he said, voice strained. “But that doesn’t mean…” Alyssa raised her hand. Cut him off. “No. No excuses. No explanations.” Her gaze locked onto his, and it was ice. “You made a choice.” The words hit harder than any slap. He went still. Didn’t speak, move, or breathe. Then he managed, “You’re acting like you don’t care,” rough, wounded. Alyssa’s mouth curved. “I don’t.” Lie. But she sold it well. The truth would wreck her, and she wasn’t about to let that happen. He searched her face, desperate for something the girl he remembered. She was gone. “You’ll regret this,” he said finally, his tone going dark. Not guilt possessiveness. Alyssa leaned in, voice low so only he could hear. “No,” she whispered. “You will.” She stepped back, turned, and walked away. This time, he didn’t follow. But his glare burned into her back confused, angry, unsettled. Good. Alyssa didn’t slow until she reached the steps of the pack house. Heart hammering, but not from fear. From what she was about to do. This was it. Her wolf stirred. No turning back. She lifted her chin and strode inside. The second she crossed the threshold, the whole mood shifted. Power hung heavy in the air. Dominant. Unforgiving. This was his domain, and she’d walked straight into it. Her senses snapped sharp. Instincts screamed: be careful, submit, lower your gaze. She didn’t. Instead, she moved forward, steady, calm. Unafraid. All eyes went to her guards, pack members. More whispers. “What is she doing here?” “She’s lost it.” “She shouldn’t be here after what happened…” Alyssa ignored them. Focused on one thing. Him. She felt him before she saw him that cold, commanding presence. Then a door swung open at the end of the hall, and he stepped out. The Alpha. Everything froze inside her for a second. He was overwhelming. Tall, broad, power radiating off him. Just by existing, he demanded submission. Alyssa didn’t bow. Their eyes met. The world held its breath. His gaze was razor sharp, like he could see through every layer, every thought, every secret. Alyssa stared back, refused to look away. A test. Seconds dragged out. Heavy, tense, electric. Then something flickered across the Alpha’s mouth. Not a smile. Not warmth. Interest. “Well,” he said, voice deep and cutting. “Isn’t this unexpected.” Alyssa’s heart thumped, but she kept her face steady. She moved forward. Then again. Stopped just close enough to be seen not close enough to be brushed off. “I came to speak with you,” she said. Calm. Steady. A wave of murmurs swept the room. Nobody talks to the Alpha like that. Alyssa didn’t care. This wasn’t a request. This was her first move. The Alpha studied her, eyes flicking to her neck where the mate bond used to be. He’d felt it break. Now, he looked at what was left. “Is that so?” He dropped his voice lower, dangerous. Alyssa nodded. “Yes.” Another pause. Longer. Heavy. Then he said, “Come,” and turned, walking toward his office without checking if she’d follow. Another test. Alyssa moved after him, no hesitation. This, this was exactly where she wanted to be. Behind her, the whispers exploded shock, disbelief, fear. Alyssa didn’t look back. She was already playing. And she’d just stepped onto the board.
