Aria’s POV
Silence stays in the room after Adrian speaks.
“You were not selected randomly.
”
Those words do not leave the air. They sit on my skin.
I do not blink at first.
Then I speak.
“Selected.
”
Adrian does not correct me.
Lucas shifts behind him. Uneasy. Quiet.
I step closer to the table. The envelope still lies open. My mother’s name visible inside the paper
trail.
“What does that mean,
” I ask.
Adrian’s voice is controlled.
“It means what it says.
”
“That is not an answer.
”
I laugh once. No humor.
Amara Blake enters without knocking.
She stops when she sees the envelope.
Her eyes sharpen.“This file was accessed again,
” she says.
I turn to her.
“You knew about this.
”
She does not deny it fast enough.
That pause answers more than words.
My chest tightens.
“So all of you knew,
” I say.
Lucas speaks low.
“Not all.
”
Adrian looks at him. A warning.
I catch it.
My voice rises.
Silence spreads again.
Amara steps forward.
contract.
”
“Do not protect him. Tell me what I am inside this.
”
“You are part of a structured agreement initiated before the public
My head tilts slightly.
She exhales.
“Speak plainly.
”
“Your name was in a shortlist.
”
The room tightens.
Marcus Vale’s earlier words echo in my mind.
Selected.
I turn to Adrian.
“A shortlist for what.
”
He does not answer.
That silence breaks something small inside me.
I grab the envelope.Photos scatter on the table.
Adrian and Vanessa.
Older board documents.
My mother’s file.
I feel heat rise in my chest.
“You built this,
” I say.
Adrian answers.
“No.
”
“Then explain it.
”
He steps forward slightly.
“This was arranged long before you entered my office.
”
My voice drops.
“Arranged by who.
”
He hesitates.
That hesitation is enough.
Amara answers instead.
“The board.
”
Lucas adds quietly.
“And external partners.
”
I stare at them.
“So I am what,
” I ask.
“A contract experiment.
”
Amara shakes her head once.
“A stabilizing candidate.
”
I snap my gaze to her.
“Candidate for what.
”
No one answers.
That silence is louder than anything spoken.
Morning after.
I do not return to silence again.I go to Blackwood Enterprises alone.
No Lucas.
No Adrian.
No escort.
Security stops me at the entrance.
“Board restriction in effect,
” the guard says.
I stare at him.
“Move.
”
He does not.
I step forward anyway.
Another guard appears.
“Miss Bennett, you are not authorized to enter executive level.
”
I look at him.
“I already did.
”
He hesitates.
Then his radio cracks.
A voice comes through.
“Let her pass.
”
I recognize Adrian’s tone.
Control still follows me even when he is not present.
I walk in.
Lobby feels heavier today.
Not whispers.
Stares.Fear mixed with curiosity.
People already know something changed.
Elevator ride up feels longer.
When doors open, Lucas is waiting.
He looks tired.
“You should not be here,
” he says again.
“I am tired of hearing that,
” I reply.
He steps aside.
“You will not like what is happening upstairs.
”
“I already do not like anything.
”
We walk.
Boardroom doors are open.
Inside, tension is visible before words begin.
Adrian stands at the center.
Amara is beside him.
Marcus Vale sits across the table.
Daniel Cross speaks first.
“This situation has escalated beyond internal control.
”
Marcus leans back.
“It is already market exposure.
”
Daniel continues.
“We require immediate resolution.
”
I step inside.
Every head turns.Adrian’s eyes lock on me immediately.
Daniel frowns.
“You are not part of this session.
”
I step forward.
“I am the subject of it.
”
Marcus studies me.
So does Amara.
Adrian does not speak.
Daniel continues.
“This contract is destabilizing investor trust.
”
Marcus adds.
“We are reviewing withdrawal conditions.
”
My stomach tightens.
I look at Adrian.
“You told me this was protection.
”
He answers.
“It still is.
”
I shake my head.
“Protection from what. Or who.
”
Silence.
Amara finally speaks.
“From exposure.
”
I turn to her.
“Exposure of what.
”
She hesitates.
Then answers carefully.
“The origin of your selection.
”
My breath slows.
Daniel interrupts.
“That information is not relevant to public stability.
”
I laugh once.
“It is relevant to my life.
”
Marcus leans forward.
“If this origin becomes public, valuation drops.
”My chest tightens again.
Valuation.
My existence spoken like market risk.
I look at Adrian.
“Say it.
”
He does not move.
“Say what I am,
” I repeat.
Silence.
That silence answers everything I do not want confirmed.
After the meeting.
Lucas catches me outside.
“You should not have gone in,
” he says.
“I needed answers.
”
He exhales.
“You got part of them.
”
“What am I.
”
I stop walking.
He looks away.
That tells me more than words.
Night.
Penthouse.
Adrian is already inside when I return.
He does not look surprised.
“You pushed the board,
” he says.“Yes.
”
“You exposed pressure points.
”
“I exposed truth,
” I correct.
Silence.
He steps closer.
“You are not ready for full disclosure.
”
I stare at him.
“Do not decide readiness for me.
”
His voice lowers slightly.
“This system existed before you.
”
“I do not care,
” I say.
“I am inside it now.
”
Silence spreads again.
I take a step closer.
“You said I was not selected randomly.
”
He nods once.
“So tell me,
” I say.
“Who chose me.
”
A long pause.
Then Adrian speaks.
“My father’s foundation.
”
My chest tightens.
He continues.
“Before his death.
”
Silence breaks in a different way now.
Not pressure.
Revelation.I whisper.
“Why.
”
Adrian looks at me.
“Because your mother’s condition matched criteria tied to an unresolved settlement.
”
My body goes cold.
I step back slightly.
“So my mother was used as entry point,
” I say.
Adrian does not deny it.
That is the confirmation.
I feel something inside me shift completely.
Not anger.
Not shock.
Something sharper.
Clarity.
I pick up the envelope again.
And for the first time since this began.
I understand I was never placed in a contract.
I was placed in a system built before I even existed in the room.
