*Chapter 4: The First Bite*
Night 2. The moon was almost full.
Roran was on the floor. Sweating. Shaking. His claws were out.
“Get out,” he growled. There was blood on his lips. “Before I hurt you.”
I knelt next to him anyway. “No. I’m not leaving.”
“Mara, please.” His gold eyes were wild. Not human. “I can smell you. You smell like home.”
My heart stopped.
“What do you mean?”
“Fated mate,” he whispered. The words sounded like pain. “The moon chose you. That’s why you’re still alive.”
Before I could answer, his body arched. Bones cracked. A sound tore from his throat that wasn’t human.
“Roran!” I grabbed his face with both hands.
He looked at me one last time. Then his eyes went completely black.
And he lunged.
Sharp teeth sank into my shoulder.
Pain exploded. Fire and ice together.
I screamed. But I didn’t push him away.
Because in that second, I felt it .
A pull in my chest. A thread tying us together.
When he pulled back, he was human again. Shaking.
“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.” His forehead pressed to mine. Blood on both of us.
Outside, the storm went quiet.
Night 3 was tomorrow.
