Chapter 6 — The Fragile Happiness
Sa loob ng ilang linggo, tila huminto ang mundo para kina Joong at Dunk. They found a rhythm — a fragile, beautiful rhythm that made the days blur into something soft and golden.
It was the kind of happiness that felt like holding a secret in a room full of people; it was precious, but you were always afraid it might break if you breathed too hard.
Sa pagitan ng mga taping, Joong would often show up at the hospital. He wasn't the "National Heartthrob" when he walked through those sterile doors; he was just a man with a paper bag and a mischievous grin.
"Doctor Dunk, your favorite delivery boy reporting for duty," Joong would announce, leaning casually laban sa hamba ng pinto ng opisina ni Dunk.
Dunk would glance up from a mountain of paperwork, trying to hide the smile tugging at his lips. "Alam mo namang bawal ang bisita sa oras na ito, Mr. Archen."
"Good thing I'm not a visitor. I'm a... morale booster," Joong would tease, setting the warm food on the desk. "I can practically feel the stress radiating from you through our text messages."
"Morale booster?" Dunk would repeat, raising an eyebrow.
"Exactly. You've been frowning all day, haven't you? I can practically feel the stress radiating from you through our text messages," Joong would say, setting the warm food on the desk.
"Kahit ang mga bayani, kailangang kumain, Dunk."
Those moments became their quiet refuge — maliit at ordinaryong mga sandali na tila nagiging sagrado dahil sa pagmamahal na dahan-dahang namumukadkad.
Subalit ang kapayapaang iyon ay biglang nayanig nang sumalang si Joong sa isang live talk show para sa promotion ng kanyang bagong movie. The atmosphere was light at first, until the interviewer, a veteran known for hard-hitting questions, shifted the topic.
"Joong, everyone is looking forward to your wedding with Doctor Dunk. It's being called the 'Wedding of the Year,'" simula ng interviewer. Joong smiled, nodding gracefully.
"But," the interviewer's tone changed, "we've been receiving some... interesting materials today. There are videos and photos circulating online of you and your co-star, Jamie, in very private settings. These were taken just recently, or so the rumors say."
The large screen behind them flashed a grainy video of Joong and Jamie outside a dimly lit restaurant, looking close and intimate. It was from weeks ago — before Joong and Jamie officially ended things — but to the audience, the timeline was blurry.
"The public is confused, Joong," the interviewer pressed, her eyes piercing.
"The fans are asking: Is this engagement to Doctor Dunk just a PR move? Or are you cheating on your fiancé with Jamie?"
The studio went dead silent. Joong felt the blood drain from his face. The bright studio lights felt like they were burning his skin. He could see the audience whispering, their eyes filled with judgment. To them, he wasn't a man caught in a complicated family arrangement; he was a cheater.
"Jamie and I... we are close," Joong started, his voice thick and wavering.
"But the video... it's not what people think."
"The video shows you holding her hand and hugging her, Joong. That looks like more than just 'close friends' to most people," the interviewer countered.
"Is Doctor Dunk aware that you're spending your late nights with your 'Golden Pair' partner instead of him?"
Joong gripped the armrest of his chair until his knuckles turned white. He couldn't reveal his past relationship with Jamie without dragging her into the mess, and he couldn't explain the arranged marriage without exposing their families. He was trapped in his own web of silence.
"My commitment to Dunk is real," he managed to say, though his voice sounded hollow even to his own ears.
"Please... respect our privacy."
Nang gabi ring iyon, Dunk visited the set. He had seen the interview. He had seen the comments online calling Joong a "liar" and a "cheater." He stood in the shadows, watching Joong film a romantic scene with Jamie. The tension on set was palpable.
During the break, Joong spotted Dunk and ran toward him, still in costume, his eyes frantic.
"Dunk, let me explain. That video was old. It was before—"
"I know, Joong," Dunk interrupted softly, his voice calm but his eyes reflecting a deep, quiet pain.
"I know the truth. Pero ang publiko... hindi nila alam. And seeing you with her, even if it's for work... it's getting harder to ignore the noise."
Joong reached out, but he hesitated, aware of the cameras and the staff watching them.
"I'm sorry, Dunk. I never wanted you to be part of this mess."
"I chose to be part of this, remember?" Dunk reminded him, a sad smile on his lips.
"But I'm a doctor, Joong. I deal with reality. And the reality is, your world is built on how people see you. Right now, they see a man who isn't being honest."
The cracks grew deeper. That night, they sat on Dunk's balcony, but the silence wasn't comfortable anymore. It was heavy with the weight of the controversy.
"Do you ever think about how weird this is?" Joong asked, his voice tired.
"I'm an actor, yet I'm failing to play the most important role of my life."
Dunk looked at him, his gaze lingering on the city lights. "Maybe it's because you're tired of acting, Joong. Maybe we both are."
Joong's schedule grew even more suffocating as the studio tried to "clean" his image with more public appearances. Dunk's shifts became a sanctuary from the gossip, but even in the hospital, people whispered when he passed by.
One night, Joong called, his voice cracking. "I'll come by. I just need to hold you, Dunk. Kahit saglit lang."
But as fate would have it, the "fragile happiness" they built was finally trembling under the pressure. Joong was held back by an emergency meeting with his PR team, and Dunk fell asleep at the table, his head resting on his arms, with the TV in the background still showing clips of the interview that was tearing them apart.
When Joong finally arrived, he didn't see a happy fiancé. He saw a man exhausted by a life that had become too loud. Joong realized that their love wasn't just being tested by time — it was being hunted by the very world that claimed to adore them.
