RAY POV
I headed for the hunting field alone.
During hunts involving newly mated couples, the female wolf escorts her mate to the hunting fields and tied a red fabric around his arm as a good luck charm.
There was no need for Isabel to do that. The last thing I needed was for her to misunderstand the nature of our relationship.
When I reached the hunting field, it was filled with members of the Throneblood pack.
Many of them gave me a wide space, their surprise mingling with fear. It was an instinctive reaction, so I didn't blame any of them. Even if they couldn't see it, their wolves felt the presence of my wolf, my lycan.
I found a less populated spot to the side where I wouldn't wield as much authority over them.
My father wasn't present, so Beta Selena officiated, her commanding voice easily carrying across the area.
"The wolf with the highest number of kills will be the winner of this hunt. The hunting area will be between..."
I tuned out as she went over the usual rules of the hunt. I couldn't wait for it to be done already.
I met Jonah's gaze. He stood next to his mate, Rachel, who seed to be annoyed by something.
Jonah was ignoring her rants, the rage in his eyes burning bright as he glared at me. And i knew that to him, this hunt was just another competition between the two of us.
Some days, I wondered how, as brothers, we'd come to this point. But most days, I didn't care to think about it.
The scent of vanilla infused with something erotic had my lycan within me stirring so hard. I didn't have to turn to know my mate had just arrived.
How f*****g great.
Jonah's gaze shifted from me to somewhere behind me. His eyes widened when they landed on Isabel, and then he pulled a surprised Rachel into a passionate kiss that was the habit of newly mated couples.
How childish. But it'd probably get to Isabel anyway- after all, they'd been together for two years.
Isabel stopped right behind, but she didn't say a word, forcing me to make the first move.
I turned to face her, my anger already furious. Why did she have to make everything so difficult?
"I don't remember inviting you here, little Isabel,"I snapped.
I tried not to notice how extremely attractive her long summery gown hugged her curves before floating around her ankles, creating a perfect image of innocence that was severely at odds with her bold personality.
Isabel was unfazed, those perfectly shaped almond lips forming a pout as she tied the fabric of her gown around her arm.
"I don't remember needing your invitation to live my life the way I want."
It always amazed me how someone so small could be so... aggravating.
"You do know you're supposed to tie that fabric on the person you want to win right?"I said dryly.
Those amber eyes flashed with barely suppressed anger.
"And what exactly is your point?"She asked.
I lifted an eyebrow.
"You don't want me to win."
Isabel scoffed.
"Go ahead."Her tone dripped with mockery as she tightened tye fabric on my arm so tightly it almost cut off my blood flow. "Tell me what I feel, because clearly I can't figure that out for myself."
I placed my hand over hers, and Isabel froze.
"It seems I have misjudged you mate,"I said, lowering my voice so she would lean to listen.
Slipping my finger under the fabric, I ripped the fabric, letting it fall to the ground.
Isabel's face tightened with rage.
"You bas-"She began, but I didn't let her finish.
"I want something else as a good lunch charm. This fabric tieing bores me."
Placing my hand dangerously low on her back, I pulled Isabel close, letting my gaze dip to her lips.
Isabel's breath came fast, her pupils dilating and contracting rapidly, her eyes shifting between amber and red as she wrestled for control over her wolf.
Then she tipped her head back to look at me, a familiar anger in her eyes.
"If you dare kiss me, I'll hit you Soo hard you won't need to worry about using protection when you f**k Elsa." She said, meaning her exact words.
Laughter bubbled up within me, but it never left my lips.
I let go of Isabel with a flick to her forehead that had her pouring a prayer of immortality at me.
"See you later, dear mate."I said in a mocking tone. I walked away from her and joined the other wolves, who were heading towards the main hunting field.
I tried to relax.
Maybe this hunt was what I needed to remove some tension that had been building up this past few days.
I didn't dare to fully transform though.
Not only would the members of the Throneblood pack be at risk if my lycan got loose, but with Isabel in the crowd, I couldn't be sure what else he would do.
Moving into a partial shift, I tore through the hunting fields, making sure to be clear of other wolves as possible.
I was the top predator. With my speed, agility, strength and unmatched senses, it was almost to easy.
The hunt, the blood, the struggle—all of it only seemed to rise my lycan appetite.
He wanted more—more flesh, more blood, more resistance, and most of all, a better prey.
I felt his thoughts shifting to the wolf who'd been senseless enough to challenge him to a fight. My lycan bared his teeth. Yes, that wolf would make a fine prey.
I tried to regain control, but the monster was pushing to the front of my consciousness.
I could already imagine it—how the prey would scream and beg when we tear the skin from his bones and grind—
A sharp pain pierced through my bloodlust, snapping me back to my senses.
I clutched at my head, wondering where the attack came from, but I wasn't the one hurt.
The pain had come from somewhere else. Someone else.
Then I realized who it was.
Isabel.
