CHAPTER 14

I was moving before I was fully aware of what I was doing. It took me minutes to reach the field where I had left Isabel. The other female wolves were there talking and waiting for their mates return, but Isabel was nowhere to be seen. Beta Selena was at my side in seconds. "Alp—Ray, what happened?" "Where's Isabel?"I demanded, my senses going feral,my lycan fight for control, demanding to go after his mate. "Your mate?"Beta Selena glanced around, her confusion only growing. "She was here a few minutes ago." My first suspicion was that Rachel was responsible. She'd stayed behind with Isabel and the rest of the female wolves, but when I saw her glancing at us curiously, there was no guilt in her eyes. But if it wasn't her who then? I took a deep breath, trying to focus on the bond between Isabel and I, letting it draw me in. If we'd consummated our mating as we should have, I would've been able to read her mind and know her exact location in seconds. But we hadn't, so for now, this was the best I could do. The bond dragged me back to the woods I'd just left. "End the hunt and call everyone back now,"I instructed. The less collateral damage when I went after the imposter, the better. Beta Selena's eyes widened with shock. "But the hunt is just—" Her words cut off immediately when she saw the look in my eyes. Using the pack link, I reached out to the patrol team at the pack borders, commanding them to lock down the pack and not let anyone in or out of the pack. The hunting grounds were directly linked to the Frostmoon borders, so it was actually possible that there was an imposter who'd attempted to hurt my mate. But if it was Jonah, if he'd taken her...if he'd touched her... I'd f*****g kill him. My lycan desire mixed with mine. We stayed on two feet, but his superior senses took over as we hunted down the person who'd dare hurt my mate. I found Isabel's scent at the entrance of the hunting ground different from the on ethe rest of the wolves used, and I almost lost it. Her soft, sweet vanilla scent was mixed with something harsh and something harsh and a touch of acidic—her blood. She was injured. Someone had taken my mate and hurt her. Another barrier between my lycan and I fell. Our senses merged . I would kill the kidnapper. I would rip them into pieces with just my bare hands. Following the scent of Isabel's blood, I ran through the woods. The world was a blur around me, the ground steady under my feet. Her scent slowly concentrated and then— "Let' me go!" Isabel snarled, clawing blinadly at tye man who held her. Her kidnapper wasn't Jonah. I couldn't recognize him, and I knew every member of our pack, so he had to be an intruder. He towered over Isabel, almost my height, with a massive body build that easily kept Isabel's struggle in check. She kicked against him again and again without missing beat, he backhanded her and wrenched her head back by her hair until she met his gaze "Shut up you slut, or I'll —" I stepped into his path, and he froze, his gaze wide with surprise as recognition bloomed his eyes. "You... You—"He stammered, but I simply watched him. More precisely, my eyes were on his hands ariund Isabel. Despite the fact that I'd surprised him, his hold on her remained strong. One wrong move from me, and he could snap her neck like it meant nothing before i could reach him. I couldn't attack him without risking Isabel's life. "Let her go,"I said calmly. "whatever you want you'll get it." The man pulled Isabel closer to himself, as if she'd be able to protect him from my anger. "You weren't supposed to be here,"He muttered in fear, the sour scent of his fear filled my senses before he shifted his attention to Isabel. "Where's Jonah Leonard?"He demanded urgently. "He's supposed to be your mate. Why isn't he the one here for you?" "Because my mate isn't him, you i***t,"Isabel shouted. I met his gaze steadily, keeping my tone soft and calm. "Let her go, and I'll forget that this ever happened." Of course, that was a lie. He'd touched what belonged to me. He'd hit her. He was going to die. There wasn't any other acceptable conclusion. The man frowned and his lips parted, but whatever he would've said was lost when the air around me shifted. Without looking, I felt tye presence of four more foreign wolves around me. So he had backup. But not enough to stop me. An arrogant voice came from right behind me as it's owner moved towards me slowly. "We will only deal with the alpha or the alpha heir of the Throneblood pack." Isabel's kidnapper held her close, his confidence quickly restored as he growled at me. "Surrender. You're already outnumbered." Am I? As if that would matter. I would've laughed if his claws we're not on my mates throat. Slowly, I raised my hands in a show of me surrendering. "On your knees too."The arrogant voice from behind me commanded. I made eye contact with Isabel, who seemed shocked by my decision to surrender. Then her eyebrows furrowed a bit. I nodded slightly, hoping she understood my silent message. I took a step forward, lowering myself as though I was going to kneel. At the last moment, I launched myself at Isabel attacker. He jerked backward reflexively, and Isabel jerked out of his arms and hit him as she'd promised to hit me earlier before the hunt. He crumpled to the ground, clutching at his crotch and cursing angrily under his breath. "Run,"I ordered Isabel.
