CHAPTER 8

ISABEL POV I got ready for the welcome ceremony which was held for us. It wasn't because of Ray- it was for myself. I was going to be presented to the Throneblood pack as Ray'sate instead of Jonah's. That was sure to get questioning looks, and tye last thing I needed was to damage my reputation any further than it was. The welcome party was well underway when Ray and I arrived. I was still processing the receiving hall that was several times larger than the one back in the Bloodmoon pack when I heard a loud scream. "Ray!" Ray's arm fell from my waist as he caught the woman who literally jumped into his arms. "Elsa."Ray held her, a soft smile playing on his lips as he looked down at her. Something twisted in my chest. I'd never seen him smile like that before. Elsa returned his smile before she pulled back, ending tye hug, her ocean blue eyes hooked onto me. "This must be your mate."She smiled as she closed the distance between us. "You're nothing like I imagined."Elsa's smile widened as she held out her hand. "I'm Elsa. It's a pleasure to meet you, Isabel." Her words were a bit friendly, but I noticed an insincere tone in her voice. I shook her hand, unsure if how to respond, while Lala bared her teeth within me, wanting to tear Elsa into pieces and stake her claim. "Thank you,"I said instead. Elsa hooked her arm through Ray's, tht sweet smile still fixed on her face. "You wouldn't mind if I stole your man from you for a few minutes, right?" She was entirely too comfortable touching Ray, and fir tye first time, I didn't see the ruthless wild setting any boundaries. Not that it bothered me though. She could have him, for all I cared too. "Sure."I nodded and turned away from them to observe the rest of the party. The band was playing, wolves talked amongst themselves, and pups ran around the large hall. There was no sign of Alpha Leonard Yet. As I took in the hall, I caught sight of Jonah, who stared at me with Rachel at his side. I couldn't help but notice that they made a really cute couple, and something hurt in my chest as I looked at my former best friend. We had to talk, but I wasn't sure I was ready for that conversation at the moment. Looking away from Jonah, I instinctively sort out Ray in the hall. He stood to the side, but he was easily noticable with his dark hair, towering build and the Alpha aura that was obvious even from a distance. I should have looked away, but I could not. So I watched Elsa talk to him with her hand on his chest, leaning too close to him as she spoke. Ray nodded as he pushed back a lock of hair behind her ear in an action that felt intimate that I almost looked away. But before I could do that, Ray raised his head, his hand still on Elsa's shoulder as he met my gaze, those hazel eyes Soo unreadable. I looked away from him that instant. The entire hall suddenly fell silent, and I turned to see why. Alpha Leonard had just walked into the hall. His son's obviously took after his build, black hair now laced with gray, and a sharp gaze that dared anyone to stand up to him. I felt Ray's presence behind me before he leaned in and put his hand on my back, his lips close to my ear. "Father would like to see you." I sucked in an anxious breath before taking Ray's outstretched arm and letting him walk me to his father Alpha Leonard was sitting on his throne when we reached him. Ray bowed slightly, his tone more formal that I would have ever imagined. "Father, this is my mate, Isabel Martins." I stole a glance at Alpha Leonard, waiting for his negative reaction to the fact that I'd mated with his first son, since he'd been the one to sign off on the alliance marriage between Jonah and me. To my greatest surprise, he looked at Ray with a kind expression on his face. "I'm glad you have finally decided to choose a mate."Alpha Leonard looked at me with a smile on his face. "Welcome to the Leonard family, dear." I bowed. "Thank you,Alpha." I'd been so nervous for nothing. It seemed like Alpha Leonard was nicer than the rumors claimed he was. I felt a familiar presence behind me, and I tensed as I caught Jonah's scent. "Father,"He said roughly. "I introduce my mate and future Luna of the Throneblood pack, Rachel Thomas." Again, if Alpha Leonard was surprised by this development, he didn't let it show. In fact, he didn't show any emotion as he spoke to Jonah. "Well done son." What type of family structure was this, where a father congratulated his son for stealing his brother's mate? Ray seemed to be done with it, because he turned to leave without saying another word, his hand on my lower back still giving the false impression that we were happy about our new relationship. We made it a few steps before the silver sword hissed through the air, tearing Ray's shirt before landing into the nearby pillar. The band stopped playing, and it felt like the whole hall hald it's breath as Ray turned to face his brother, who'd thrown the silver sword at him. Jonah didn't back down, a mocking smirk on his lips. "I Jonah challenge you to a duel brother."
