CHAPTER 10

1054 Words
Jonah moved with a bit limp, with dried blood and a black eye on his face. It looked like he'd managed to take more hits during my small conversation with Elsa, while Ray didn't look out of breath. Ray moved towards Jonah but this time, Jonah blocked his blow and used Ray's weight to throw him across the open field. I blinked, completely surprised at the sudden change in the fight. Ray began to stand, but Jonah was faster. He kicked out his brother's feet from beneath him, then mounted him and rained down series of blows on him. I still couldn't believe what was going on again, especially when Ray shouted out. "I surrender." Jonah first trembled midair, as though he wanted to continue hitting his brother. Jonah lifted his head and his gaze met mine accurately, as if he'd known I'd been watching the fight the entire time. Jonah's expression tightened and he looked away from me, straightening up and accepting his brother's surrender. It took me a minute to notice that no one was cheering for Jonah. The whole clearing was silent like a graveyard and I could guess why. We all knew Ray had thrown that fight. That was the only way Jonah could've won. I wondered if Jonah knew that as well. I turned my back in the two brothers and made my way out of the clearing, suddenly feeling suffocating. Had Elsa been right earlier? Was this really my fault? The route back to Ray's house was mostly empty, with most of the pack members either at the pack house or the fighting ground. That was good. I badly needed some minutes to myself to think without any- And then a familiar figure stepped out of the hospital and right into my path. "Rachel,"I breathed. Clenching her jaw, she ignored me and tried to move around me. I caught her hand and pulledeher to a stop. "Did you start seeing Jonah before I got engaged to him?"I asked. "And if I did?"Rachel glared at me. Those oven blue eyes that had once been a source of comfort to me were filled with spite. My heart ached. Rachel and I had been friends since I was seven. On the day our friendship started, I'd been bullied by some children and she'd offered me a smile amd a band aid that refused to stick to my skin no matter how much we tried. The child in me refused to believe her friend had betrayed her. "Why didn't you tell me?"I asked, hearing how desperate I sounded but I was unable to stop myself. I wanted her to tell me something, the truth just to make it it make sense..I wanted to forgive her. Rachel placed her hand above mine and pushed it of her arm. Her lips twisted in disgust. "If you weren't so full of yourself, you would have noticed things around you, Isabel." I sucked in a my breath. "For the sake of our friendship,I'm trying to understand you but you're -" Rachel didn't even let me finish. "Did you just say our friendship?"She laughed, rolling her eyes, "Don't make me laugh, Isabel. We were many things but never friends." We weren't friends? Wed spent the last twenty one years exploring as much of the world as we could together with the restrictions of the Bloodmoon pack. We'd shared everything together - our joy, sorrows, pains. I knew her so well as I knew myself- or so I thought. "I don't understand,"My voice came out as a small whisper. "Of course, pretty Isabel wouldn't,"Rachel laughed, but it was a sharp sound that held no excitement. "Poor little Isabel born into the tragedy of being the daughter of the Alpha. Poor Isabel who suffered under her father's daily taunts and beatings. Poor Isabel who was bullied by her pack because she couldn't fit in." Her oven blue eyes were full of so much hate that I was speechless, but Rachel didn't stop there. "Poor Isabel, arranged to get mated to the eligible wolf in the continent! But no, why couldn't she have a love match or her true mate?" Her words rang with ridicule. "Rachel,"I said, shocked by her words At that moment, I realized how much she hated me. Rachel shook her head, another laugh escaping her lips. "I guess it never occurred to you that some of us had it much worse that you did."Her voice was barely above a whisper now, but her words hit my Soo hard. I knew Rachel had a tough childhood. She had to fend for herself after her father's death. Whenever I tried to gett her to talk about it, she always change the topic , so I eventually stopped trying to ask her about it since I assumed it was a sensitive matter. I should've tried harder to get her to tell me. Maybe things wouldn't have been bad as it was now. "Im sorry."I whispered, my eyes burning with tears. "I'm sorry I didn't take notice of many things." Rachel paused, but then her face changed into aask of bitterness. "You aren't sorry yet Isabel, but you soon will,"She ground out. She leaned in, making sure I didn't miss any of her words. "I seduced Jonah before you met him because I knew he'd be your mate. Now I'll have everything that was meant for you,"Rachel taunted, her words dripping with poison. "Ray might've taken a little pity on you and mated with you, but you'll come to hate him for that big decision. I will become the Luna of this pack instead of you, and I'll make sure i make your life here a living hell." With that, she pulled way from me, but I caught her arm again. Lifting my gaze to meet hers, I spoke. "You might have never seen me as a friend, but you me you've always been one." Regardless of how this turned out, I wanted her to know that I still loved her "You should learn her to treat your higher up,Isabel,"Rachel snapped, pulling her arm out of my hand with a look of disdain on her face. "Touch me again, and you might not have hands again." Without a backward glance, she walked away. This time I didn't dare to stop her.
