RAY POV
I couldn't remember the last time I'd let myself get involved in matters like this.
The image of average height woman with dark hair and a body that could drive a man to sin and eyes that always burned with rage popped into my mind.
Yes. She was the reason.
The source of my whole frustration and the being behind my existence.
My mate. Isabel Martins.
My father sat behind his massive mahogany desk, his expression rapt as he leveled a steady look at Jonah and me.
It didn't stop Jonah's complains.
"Isabel was meant to be mine!"Jonah snarled, standing up so fast his chair fell to the ground.
Our father was unmoved.
"We are all aware of that,"He said, his gaze slowly moving to me. "Ray made a mistake. You fought with him. Your differences have been settled."
Jonah's hands clenched into fists at his side, his furious stare turned to me.
"That fight doesn't count, I demand a proper compensation from him."
I didn't react to Jonah's words. Instead, I met our father's gaze.
"Is there reason you called for me, Alpha?"
There was no need for pretense here, no need to yeild to Jonah and act like he was going to be my future alpha. The three of us in this room knew who the real alpha was.
A growl ripped out of Jonah's throat, his gaze darken with rage as his wolf rose close to the surface.
"Don't you dare ignore me, you son of a bitch."
My wolf opened an eye.
It took all my strength to push him back down before I looked at Jonah for the first time since I entered our father's study.
"When you speak to me, you will watch your time and words."My voice was low, but even I could feel the waves of authority rolling off of me with each words. "For my mistake in mating with Isabel, I have allowed you overstep boundaries. Don't push me Jonah."
"That's enough!"Father growled, slamming his fist against his desk.
My wolf wasn't disturbed by this, maybe because he knew that my father wasn't challenging his authority.
"Jonah, you are already mated to someone else. Put this issue away,"He said, almost feeling pity. "We have other matters to attend to. The Frostmoon pack-"
"Would you have said the same if I'd stolen Ray's bride?"Jonah's jaw clenched and unclenched, bitter anger in his eyes.
This was just another of the funny events that filled my life.
But what would happen in that tensed situation was something even I was curious about.
Judging from the dark as night gaze and pissed off expression, our father clearly wasn't finding the same joke in this as I did.
"Jonah."His voice held a promise of violence. "Get out of my study and don't you dear come back until you are back to your senses."
Jonah hesitated, as if he was deciding disobeying the command, before storming away with a angry glare at me.
The study fell silent again, but this time, I wasthe one who broke the silence.
"In few days, he'll be the leader of this pack,"I reminded father. "If you don't treat him with more respect, he will shatter."
I saw it all the time. Power shift could easily worsen preexisting wound in a wolf's ego and drive him to destruction.
Father regarded me frankly, a ironic smile across his lips.
"Is that why you let him win the fight?"He asked.
No. I'd let him win because if I hadn't, I would've snapped his neck and killed him.
I rose to my feet, turning my head slightly to my father.
"If this meeting is over, I'll like to be on my way now."
I was already halfway to the door when the vulnerability in his voice stopped me.
"You will take part in the hunt today, won't you?" He asked
Ever since I dropped my position as Alpha heir, I hadn't taken part in hunts or any other pack celebration or gatherings, apart from the occasional pack run.
But my father had been hellbent about bringing me into the flock and with this mistake hanging over me, he might be able to drag me in.
This couldn't have come at a wrong time
I had to leave the pack today to see...her.
I didn't turn
"I haven't changed my mind about how the pack is managed,"I reminded father.
There was a pause before he responded- a small one, but I felt it nonetheless.
"I'd like you to be there as a member of the pack. Please."
As a little child, he'd always seemed to be the all powerful, knowledgeable and unopposed man, but the softness in his voice underscored how much my father had aged.
I wondered how much of it was an act.
I turned to face him and bowed slightly.
"As you command, Alpha."
Straightening, I headed for tue door once more
"I am very glad you've finally taken a mate."Father's voice was stronger now, almost proud. "Things will now be as they should."
A bitter rage filled my heart.
No. Things would never be the way they should.
I would make sure of that if it was the last thing I did.
I might have marked and claimed Isabel in front of both pack as my mate, but she would never be my mate in truth. I would never let her.
I would make sure I break her completely until her current hate for me would seem like nothing in contrast.
