After having dinner, Aliya decided to go see her friend Asabe, who lives two houses from them. After spending some time with her friend, she headed back home, feeling relieved a little. As she entered the house, Aliya was greeted by her mother's excited voice. "Aliya, come quickly! We have a visitor!" Aliya's heart sank, sensing something was amiss.
Following the sound of her mother's voice to the living room, Aliya's worst fears were confirmed. Alhaji Ilu sat on the couch, a smug smile spreading across his face. Aliya felt a wave of revulsion wash over her, recalling the horror stories about his treatment of his wives.
"Ah, Aliya, my dear," Alhaji Ilu said, his voice dripping with condescension. "I've heard so much about you. You're even more beautiful than I imagined." His eyes roamed over her body, making Aliya's skin crawl.
Aliya's anger and rebellion surged. She knew she had to make a stand, to assert her autonomy in the face of this oppressive arrangement.
"I don't want to marry you," Aliya declared, her voice firm and resolute. "I want to go to school, become a teacher. I refuse to be treated like a servant or a wife. I'm a person, with my own thoughts and dreams."
The room fell silent, with all eyes on Aliya. Her mother's face turned red with anger, while her father's face turned white with shock. Alhaji Ilu's face turned purple with rage.
"How dare you!" Alhaji Ilu thundered. "You ungrateful child! You'll do as you're told, or you'll suffer the consequences!" He took a step closer to Aliya, his fists clenched.
Aliya stood her ground, her heart pounding in her chest. She knew she had crossed a line, but she was determined to fight for her rights, no matter the cost. She looked Alhaji Ilu straight in the eye, her voice steady.
"I won't back down," Aliya said. "I won't be silenced. I deserve better than a life of servitude and oppression."
The room erupted into chaos, with Aliya's parents shouting at her to apologize, and Alhaji Ilu threatening to punish her for her disobedience. Aliya's mother rushed to her side, grabbing her arm and trying to pull her away.
"Aliya, stop this!" her mother cried. "You're embarrassing us! You'll ruin our reputation!"
But Aliya shook her off, her eyes blazing with determination. "I won't be silenced," she repeated. "I won't be treated like a slave."
Alhaji Ilu's face turned an even deeper shade of purple, and he took another step closer to Aliya. "You'll pay for your insolence," he snarled. "You'll regret the day you ever crossed me."
Aliya stood her ground, her heart pounding in her chest. She knew she had started a revolution, one that would change the course of her life forever.
As Alhaji Ilu's words hung in the air, Aliya's mother turned to her, her eyes blazing with anger. "Aliya, how could you do this to us?" she cried. "How could you embarrass us like this?"
Aliya stood her ground, her eyes flashing with defiance. "I won't apologize for standing up for myself," she said. "I won't apologize for wanting a better life."
Alhaji Ilu took another step closer to Aliya, his fists clenched. "You're a disobedient child," he spat. "You need to be taught a lesson."
Aliya's father intervened, his voice calm but firm. "Alhaji Ilu, I think we should discuss this matter further," he said. "Perhaps we can find a solution that works for everyone."
But Alhaji Ilu was beyond reason. "There will be no discussion," he snarled. "The marriage will go ahead as planned. And if Aliya refuses to cooperate, she will suffer the consequences."
Aliya's heart sank, but she refused to back down. She knew that she had to fight for her freedom, no matter the cost.
"I'll never marry you," Aliya said, her voice firm. "I'll never be your wife."
Alhaji Ilu's face turned red with rage, and he raised his hand to strike Aliya. But Aliya's father intervened, grabbing his arm and holding him back.
"That's enough," he said. "We'll not have any violence in this house."
Alhaji Ilu's face twisted with anger, but he slowly lowered his hand. "This isn't over," he spat. "You haven't seen the last of me."
And with that, he turned and stormed out of the house, leaving Aliya and her family in a state of shock and turmoil.
Aliya's mother turned to her, her eyes blazing with anger. "You've brought shame to our family," she cried. "You'll regret the day you ever crossed Alhaji Ilu."
But Aliya stood her ground, her eyes flashing with defiance. "I won't regret standing up for myself," she said. "I won't regret fighting for my freedom."
As the argument continued, Aliya's father tried to intervene, but it was clear that the situation was spiraling out of control. Aliya's mother was furious, and Alhaji Ilu's threats hung in the air like a challenge.
Aliya knew that she had to get out of the house, to escape the toxic atmosphere that was suffocating her. She turned and ran, dashing out of the house and into the night, leaving her family and their anger behind.
