“Well, Pugh, what is the latest thing in playthings?”
I had entered the room unnoticed, and for a second or two had been standing at the door watching him. He was seated at a table with, in front of him, what seemed to be an oblong mahogany box. In one hand he had a long flexible tube, the two ends of which he was holding to his ears. So engrossed was he with his occupation that he had not been conscious of my entrance. At the sound of my voice he dropped the tube, and sprang to his feet with what seemed to me to be unnecessary noise and clatter.
