Chapter 16 – A Night of Stars and Fragile Promises
The night outside the hospital was unusually still. The city around them slept with dim streetlamps flickering in the distance, but inside the hospital garden, the silence was heavy, as though the world itself had paused to hold its breath. Adrian gently pushed Elena’s wheelchair along the stone path, the wheels clicking softly against the uneven ground.
Elena had begged him earlier, her wide brown eyes glistening with tears, “Adrian… I don’t want to spend another night between those walls. Take me outside. I need to breathe.”
And he had agreed, because he could deny her nothing.
Wrapped in his jacket, she looked fragile, like a porcelain doll someone had wrapped in too many layers just to keep her from breaking. Her chestnut-brown hair, though thinner now, still carried a faint shine under the moonlight. Adrian leaned closer and whispered as he wheeled her through the quiet path, “You look like you belong to the stars tonight.”
Elena gave a weak chuckle. “Flattery won’t stop me from coughing up my lungs, you know.” She pressed her hand to her lips as another dry cough shook her small frame.
Adrian immediately stopped, kneeling down beside her. “Elena… maybe this was a bad idea. You should rest—”
“No,” she cut him off, her voice trembling but firm. “Don’t take this from me too. Just for tonight, I want to feel alive.”
The vulnerability in her voice shattered something inside him. He kissed the back of her cold hand, holding it against his cheek. “Then we’ll stay as long as you want. All night, if you need.”
Her lips curved into the faintest smile. “You spoil me, Adrian Hale .”
He laughed softly, though his eyes burned with unshed tears. “It’s not spoiling. It’s survival—for me. Loving you is the only way I know how to breathe.”
---
The garden wasn’t large—just a few benches, some neglected flowerbeds, and a stretch of grass—but under the blanket of stars, it felt like their own private universe. Adrian parked her wheelchair near a wooden bench and then sat down beside her, pulling her gently into his arms. She leaned her head against his chest, listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat.
For a moment, neither spoke. The silence was comfortable, broken only by the whisper of leaves in the breeze.
Then Elena broke it, her voice small. “Do you ever wonder… if we had met under different circumstances? Like… without this sickness… without this countdown hanging over me?”
Adrian tightened his hold around her. “Every day. I imagine waking up next to you, bringing you coffee, fighting over stupid things like where to spend the holidays. I imagine growing old with you, Elena. That’s my disease. And it has no cure.”
Her throat constricted. Tears slipped down her face silently. “You make it sound so easy… but for me, every time I picture the future, it stops. It just—” She choked, clutching his shirt. “It just stops, Adrian. Like someone turned off the light.”
His hand cupped her cheek, forcing her to look up at him. “Then I’ll light every candle, every star, every fire, until you never feel that darkness again. Do you hear me? You’re not allowed to stop. Not while I’m breathing.”
Elena searched his face, saw the raw desperation etched in every line. His eyes—stormy gray, fierce and unrelenting—looked at her as if she were the only thing keeping him alive. And in that moment, she knew… he was right. He needed her as much as she needed him.
Her lips parted in a whisper. “Kiss me, Adrian.”
He didn’t hesitate. His mouth claimed hers, soft at first, then deeper, hungrier. It wasn’t just a kiss; it was a battle against time, a desperate plea to hold on. His hands cradled her face as if she might break, but the fire between them was undeniable. Elena clung to his shirt, pulling him closer, tasting his pain, his love, his fear all at once.
When he pulled back, both of them were breathing unevenly.
“God,” he muttered against her lips, “I’m addicted to you. Even if it kills me, I’ll keep coming back.”
Her eyes brimmed with emotion. “And I’m addicted to this moment. Because I don’t know how many more I’ll get.”
---
They stayed like that for a while, wrapped in each other under the stars. But then Elena’s smile faltered. She lifted her thin fingers and pointed upward. “Look at them, Adrian. Do you see it? The stars… they burn so brightly, but only because they’re dying.”
The words pierced him.
“Don’t say that,” he whispered, pressing his forehead against hers.
“But it’s true,” she murmured, a tear sliding down her cheek. “I’m just like them. Burning out… trying to shine before I fade.”
His chest tightened painfully. “Then let me be the fool who holds onto your light forever. Even if the world goes dark, I’ll carry you here.” He placed her hand over his heart. “Always here.”
Her lips quivered, and she kissed him again—longer this time, pouring her soul into it. Her frail body trembled, but she didn’t stop.
When the kiss broke, Adrian’s voice dropped into a husky whisper. “If I could, I’d lock you in my arms and never let you go.”
She smiled weakly, teasing despite her tears. “That sounds more like k********g than romance.”
He chuckled, brushing his lips against her ear. “Then I’ll be your captor forever. You won’t escape me, Elena Marlowe.”
Her laughter faded into another coughing fit. This time, it was harsher, her body convulsing. Adrian immediately panicked, holding her tighter. “Elena!”
She tried to wave him off, forcing a breathless laugh. “Don’t look at me like that… I’m fine.”
“No, you’re not.” His voice broke. He tilted her chin up, searching her pale face. “You’re killing me, do you know that? Every cough feels like someone’s ripping me apart.”
Her fingers stroked his cheek, weak but loving. “Then hold me together… just for tonight.”
---
They sat in silence again, until Elena whispered, “Tell me something, Adrian.”
“Anything.”
“If… if I don’t make it—”
He cut her off immediately, his tone sharp. “Don’t.”
Her eyes pleaded. “Please. I need to say this.”
His jaw clenched, but he nodded.
“If I don’t make it, I want you to promise me… you’ll live. Don’t let my memory chain you down. Find laughter again. Find someone who makes your heart beat, like I did. Promise me, Adrian.”
His entire body stiffened. His voice cracked. “How can you ask me to replace you? Do you even understand what you are to me?”
“I’m asking because I love you,” she whispered, pressing her lips softly against his knuckles. “More than my own life.”
Adrian’s eyes glistened. He shook his head violently. “No. I can’t. There’s no one else. There never will be.”
She closed her eyes, tears slipping out. “Then at least promise me you won’t drown in grief. That you’ll… keep painting my smile across your days. Even if I’m not there.”
Adrian kissed her temple, his chest trembling. “I can’t promise that. But I can promise this—I’ll love you until my last breath. And if there’s a world beyond this one, I’ll find you there too.”
Her lips curved faintly, the ghost of a smile. “That’s enough.”
---
The night grew colder. Adrian pulled her closer, wrapping his jacket around her tiny frame. She leaned against him, her breathing shallow but steady. Her eyes fluttered closed, and for a terrifying second, Adrian thought she had slipped away.
“Elena!” he whispered urgently, shaking her lightly.
Her eyes fluttered open, weak but playful. “Relax… I’m still here. But when I do go… I want it to be like this. In your arms, under the stars.”
His throat tightened. He kissed her forehead, then her lips again, with a desperation that nearly undid him. “Don’t talk about leaving me. Not tonight. Tonight, you’re mine. And I’m yours.”
She smiled faintly, whispering back, “Forever.”
And under the night sky, they clung to each other as though their love could rewrite fate.
