Instead of asking Emma outright what she meant, he kept the thread of the story going. ‘So you left the house and went across the paddocks? Or into the bush? Towards Judi’s house?’
‘No, I didn’t really, like, know where her house was.’ Emma sipped some coffee and grimaced. ‘Only that it was a bit more towards the pub. I went into the bush first, but I nearly got lost, so I came out and stuck to the edges. I was just walking. When the moon went down, I had to stop. I didn’t have a torch.’
‘Hmm, maybe I can help with directions.’ He pulled out his phone and brought up Google Maps, honed in on Candlebark and asked for the name of the road where Kate and Emma lived. It was a bit hard to see on the phone, but the bush areas were green and Emma pointed out the way she thought she went.
