*8pm July 4th, 1 week ago*
There I was lying upside down on my bed looking at my mirrored reflection. My tangled mass of black hair hung over my face making me look like I came out of “The Grudge”. I was bored and hoping for something exciting to happen.
~How did I get stuck at home on Fourth of July~
My thoughts repeated the same question for the past hour. I guess trying to turn a girl into a frog a week earlier didn’t help. So far being a 18 year old witch was a peace of cake, unless I got pissed off at someone then things would start getting out of control. I tried apologizing to my mom about a thousand times but she wasn't having it; said it was a danger to our race or something..
There was a tap at my second floor window, my brain said I should ignore it but a second tap caused me to sit up quickly, big mistake. Stars were clouding my vision as I headed towards the window, onced opened a blast of hot damp air came rushing into my air conditioned room. Looking down below I saw a boy with light brown hair, tanned skin, and a cut up bloody shirt.
“I won’t be your friend anymore if you keep trying to get yourself killed” I told him. A grin slowly appeared over his face,
“Awe come on Tide it’s only a scratch” He looked down at himself and shrugged “scratches” .
Sighing I let him through the front door. Up close I could see his eye was turning purple ruining his hazel color,
“Duncan do you not know how to not get into fights” I asked already knowing how he’ll respond. He just continued grinning as he followed me up to my room.
One of the rules of the house is there are no boys in my room when no one is around. Technically, I would be breaking this rule bringing Duncan up here since my parents weren’t home but he’s one of the exceptions. I’ve known Duncan since Kindergarten, thinking back I believe he was making his first attempts at flirting; it failed miserably. I guess you can say we became instant friends since I ignored most of his boyish charms. Now here we are, him wounded and me cleaning the mess, always a nuisance.
While I was grabbing the alcohol Duncan asked
“So, are you going to Melina’s party tonight? Almost everyone will be there” I stared at him stupidly
“Melina’s having a party and I didn’t know about it!” I nearly yelled.
If Melina hadn’t been the meanest rich girl in school I wouldn’t care but she is. I started wiping the blood off Duncan’s face but before he could protest from the pain the door bell rang.
“I wonder who that is” Duncan said while wiggle his eyebrows
“oh please if you’re here then you already know who else would show up” I said heading back downstairs.
Coming up on the door I felt a chill as if someone was watching me. I shrugged it off, chalking it up to my imagination and let my second close friend in. his dark grey eyes were slightly covered by his dirty blonde hair.
“What’s up Tide” his soft voice hovered over to me like a cool wind.
“Hey Sam guess who beat you here by a few minutes”
“let me see, is he tall, cocky, annoying and sometimes an ass” Sam questioned.
“I am not annoying” Duncan exclaimed from upstairs. Sam just rolled his eyes leading the way back to my room while whispering
"He accepts he's an ass though," I couldn't contain the small giggle that escaped
"I heard that, don't underestimate my hearing, on a side note look what I found"
Duncan managed to pull out my old photo album in the short time I was gone.
“Hey! How'd you find that I was trying to keep it hidden from embarrassing parents”
Sam joined him on the bed to take a look, on closer inspection they were looking at the 1st grade photos. One of the photos was of a tiny Sam; he was so cute when he was little. I remember we met underneath one of the apple trees at school, he was crying because kids bullied him for being so small and wimpy. I told him not to cry and to just be himself like a bad PG movie, and then he started laughing. He said no one had ever told him that before and decided to be my friend; thus turning a duo into a trio. Duncan and Sam didn’t really get along in the beginning they were always fighting like a cat and dog, but now they’re like brothers, fighting brothers anyway.
“So Tide, are you going to the party tonight?” Sam asked. I frowned
~If I don’t go I won’t be in trouble but Melina would never let me live it down; but if I do go and get back before my parents it’s a win-win situation.~
“I’m definitely going”
“Awesome” they both said at the same time.
I handed Sam the alcohol and rag I was using for Duncan
"Be nice"
A wicked smile appeared on his face " I always am," he said and turned to Duncan who threw his fists up in defense.
Moments later I found myself wrapped in steam; a hot shower always did wonders for my mood. I had decided to wear an emerald spliced top with black slacks and black heels with a splash of green on the side.I was too lazy to do anything with my hair so it hung moistly down to the middle of my back. I took one last glance at the mirror before leaving the bathroom, everything matched the green eyes looking back at me.
Duncan whistled when I reentered the room, I grimaced and we all laughed
“So are we ready” Sam asked once we were done
"Yep" Duncan replied while taking off his bloodied shirt.
"Whoa whoa, what are doing" I stopped him
"Well I can't go to a party with a bloody shirt Tide"
"Well I'm not going to go to a party with someone who looks like a male stripper."
On que Sam tossed him a black short sleeved button up from a bag I just noticed around his arm. Duncan frowned and started complaining about it being a nerd shirt. I just rolled my eyes and I managed to convince him to wear it by leaving the top half open bringing his douche level a bit.
On our way out I told the boys to go ahead of me since I had the brilliant idea to spell the door just in case mom and dad came home early. It was warm outside with a slight breeze blowing at my hair. Even though I was with two of my favorite people for some reason I felt unsettled as we walked the streets of our quiet town. Sam noticed my furrowed brow
“Is something wrong” he asked and I shook my head no, at least I hoped not.
"Don't worry we'll protect you from any big scary monsters" Duncan put an arm around my shoulders followed by Sams. I couldn't help but smile
"Hm maybe I should be more scared of the monster right next to me, mr. I'm obsessed with fighting"
Duncan made a obnoxious gasp, putting a hand over his heart
" Oh how you wound me"
With that our laughter filled the quiet streets we were walking down placing my unease in the recesses of my mind.
