I’ve never been to Melina’s house so I must say, I’m impressed. Her house looked like a miniature version of a mansion but still bigger than a normal house. The cream-colored sidings were lit by lanterns that followed a path to the back. We heard the loud music and chattering of other guests before we opened the back gate. I’m not a socialite like Melina, so seeing almost the whole school at this party was a bit overwhelming.
“Here comes your stalker”, Sam said, elbowing Duncan, and he was right.
Melina came sashaying over in a dress that should have been outlawed as it was only layered straps. Maybe it was my imagination, but when her eyes settled on me, her whole demeanor changed. She wrapped herself around Duncan like a snake from hell.
“What took you so long, my party would’ve been so boring without you here?” she purred. I wanted to gag; I’ve never met a bigger fake in my life. Her attention soon turned to me as per usual.
"Oh Tide, aren't you looking....quaint"
"Not everyone can pull off the hooker look"
Duncan supressed a snort. I don't know what it was but she always brought out my haughty side, I hated it.
"Ladies, can't we all just get along" Sam suggested
" No" we said in unison, at least that was something we agreed on.
While Duncan was being seduced, Sam and I snuck away.
“ It looks like it’s just you and me” he said, taking my arm.
I let him walk me onto the dance floor,
"You seem to be forgetting, I can't dance"
Sam took both my hands and placed them on his shoulders
"I will never forget you have two left feet Tide, especially since I still have the bruises from sofmore year".
"not possible", I chuckled
"They forever live in my heart." He proclaimed while smiling
Luckily, a slow song came on and the two of us just swayed in the crowd. A half an hour later, Duncan found us at the food table stuffing our faces. He was out of breath and his hair was going in every direction.
“Hide me” he whispered, crouching down behind us, his eyes scanning the crowd.
We couldn’t help but start laughing at our frantic friend. He hurriedly began shushing us.
“ What happened to all your confidence from earlier”? I finally spoke after the giggles subsided.
“ Well, that was before Melina started talking about relationships and things that I don’t do. She may be hot as f**k but she’s a viper” his face was contorted while still watching the crowd.
“Oh, now you accept that fact, we tried to warn you dude, don’t get involved with the crazy b***h ladies, emphasis on the crazy” Sam turned around to face him, his arm snaking around his neck in a teasing way. He started dragging him away towards the stage.
“Hey look, there’s Melina, we’re gonna go say hi”
Duncan went wide-eyed as he struggled against his arm.
“ You jackass, let me go.”
Sam didn’t look strong but I’ve seen him tussle with Duncan often enough to know looks are very deceiving. Not too long after they were gone, I felt uneasy again. The hairs on my neck were crawling as if someone were burning a hole through me. My nerves were on edge and the party was starting to get too congested for my taste. I began walking towards the house, but not before the path was blocked by Meckenzie and Jessica, Melina’s annoying followers.
“Ew, Jessica, look, someone let a walking trash bag into the party, it should really return to the dumpster heap it belongs in.”
I just sighed, because they were such annoying wannabes, plus I couldn't let the comment go.
“Ha, that’s so funny. I didn’t know it was Halloween. What are you supposed to be? s**t 1 and s**t 2, great choices.” As soon as the words left my mouth, Jessica’s drink found its way on top of my head. They could never take what they dish out.
“ You're such a b***h, don’t act all high and mighty because you’re always clinging to Sam and Duncan. What’d you do sleep with both of them?”
That really made me laugh.
“You guys need help, at least I don’t need to sleep with people to make friends, I’m going to go now and let you guys wallow in your self-pity, tootles.”
I stormed off before they could say anything else. Disappearing was something I was good at; especially in crowds. Unfortunately, the inside of the house wasn't any better than the outside. Anyone could tell that alcohol fever was starting to take its hold on people. Bodies were pushing against each other, heavy make-out sessions in every room. It was the makings of an orgy waiting to happen. I could feel my mouth twist in disgust at that thought.
After squeezing through the bodies of s*x fiends, I finally found the bathroom. The sounds of the party were blocked by the thick mahogany door I made sure to lock.
~At least I don't feel like I have a death glare on my back now!
Another sigh escaped my lips as I took a good look at myself in the mirror. My shirt was definitely ruined, the stench of liquor wafting up my nose. I shut my eyes, annoyed again, so I turned on the hot water, letting it pool in my hands, before splashing my face. The warmth felt amazing until the bathroom suddenly felt colder. My instincts were screaming danger and the last thing I wanted to do was look up.
" You should've cursed them, A fair lesson for their insolence."
An eerily familiar feminine voice sang in my ear. Startled, I looked up and there in the reflection, sea-green eyes met with my own. The tension in the air had my skin crawling at the sight before me. The figure was shrouded in shadow except its familiar eyes and blood-red lips.
~what is this!~
"What is this?"
The voice echoed my thoughts, their eyes lifted to the corner in thought.
"That is a good question," she paused and the corner of her mouth lifted in a wicked grin "You'll find out soon enough."
Her voice gave way to the satisfaction she felt with her answer; which didn't clear anything up for me. There was a tapping at the door and the minute my eyes left the glass everything returned to normal. I hadn't even noticed the water had stopped running.
~Don't think about it, don't think about it, don't you dare think about it. Tide, it was nothing, and nothing it shall stay as of right now~
Too many questions were trying to bombard my mind that I could not answer. Another knock, followed by a small voice,
"Is anyone here? I really need to go."
"Just a minute" , my voice came out a little strained.
I knew Sam and Duncan were probably searching for me by now.I couldn't help but take one more glance at the mirror as I headed out. I could swear there was still a hint of a smile. At this point, I didn't know if my eyes were betraying me or if it was really there. I opened the bathroom door, letting the girl in, who quickly pushed past me, closing the door behind her. All the loud music was turned down with a slow song playing again. Taking advantage of the quiet, I let my mind wander a bit.
~what was that? Who was that? Should I be concerned? Come on Tide you're a witch, weird things happen all the time!,~ which was very true.
Things always happen to me at some point, like the time I got caught up in a fairy ring ritual, which had a very unexpected but interesting ending. I was so wrapped up in my thoughts I didn't notice my name being called until a strong arm was shaking my shoulders.
"Tide! hellooo, anybody home" Duncan's voice had a tinge of concern behind it. " You did drugs didn't you? Sam, she did drugs"
I scowled
" I didn't do any drugs, I was just lost in thought." I crossed my arms defensively.
"We're at a party Tide, what has your mind preoccupied? Is it a guy, it's a guy isn't it? Where is he or is it a she?"
Sam's hand smacked the back of Duncan's head. " Let it go man."
"What, I'm trying to make her feel better, she had this forlorn look messing up her face"
A snort escaped me, " I'm more surprised you know what forlorn means." I said and Sam busted out laughing. Duncan was looking back and forth between us, pointing a finger.
"You guys have been ganging up on me all night, is there something I need to know cause it's slightly pissing me off." We continued to laugh after that and soon Duncan joined us.
None of us could ever truly be angry with each other, it's always been like this, since the minute we met. There was a connection between the three of us that made it impossible for others to intrude upon.
"How about we get out of here" I suggested, as soon as Melina came waltzing up again.
For the first time in the night, I noticed a necklace she was wearing. A black metal weaving intricately around a green gem the size of three fingers. Such a beautiful piece did not belong around her neck, especially just to flaunt her wealth. Something deep inside me was telling me to take it, it belonged to me, but I knew that wasn't going to happen.
Ignoring the unwanted accessory that latched onto Duncan, Sam looked at me after rolling his eyes, a hint of a smile playing at his lips.
" You should stay here with me" Melina put on more of her crappy act, but this time Duncan took her hands off him.
"I'm gonna go with my friends, thanks for the offer though,"
he flashed that signature smile that made hearts melt. If it was anyone else turning her down she'd have more of a fit, instead her eyes landed on me with a death glare. I did my best to hold back a smile because she always hates it when I get what she wants. She walked off without saying anything, probably to plot a new way to make my life miserable the next chance she gets.
"You have now become a man", Duncan received a light pat on the shoulder from Sam.
"I hate you"
"Love you too buddy"
I took hold of both boys' arms, the night was still young and I wasn't ready to head home yet. Luckily for us, the beach was within walking distance. Even with the weird events of the evening, I found myself smiling.
"By the way, I need to stay the night", Sam's voice broke the silence. Two sets of eyebrows were raised since we haven't stayed at each others house for a very long time. He decided to elaborate.
"I'm having a hard time at home, a crappy time really, and I just need a break."
The way he said it made me worry. I had only met his family a few times, an odd bunch, but nothing ever seemed problematic; plus they were all gorgeous. I just smiled again.
" Of course, you stay too, Duncan, it'll be like old times."
"Time to get our snuggle buddy on." was his response.
Sam chuckled, probably remembering when we would all share my bed.
"Thanks" he said softly.
"Anytime", I gave his arm a squeeze.
We were back on the street walking towards the beach when I felt the need to look behind me. I couldn't make anything out but I felt someone staring at me again. Unfortunately, I missed the golden eyes revealing themselves in the darkness. If I did, maybe things would have turned out differently.
