Chapter 7

750 Words
Caleb was just walking through the back door when Daphne walked down the stairs from her office. “I think we need to talk before we start trying to explain anything to Lizzy.” Caleb leaned against the counter and crossed his arms, “What is that?” “I don’t think we can give her the coin to tell her everything. What do we do?” Caleb had been thinking all day about that exact question, “Why don’t we just tell her the truth. There is a coven of very dangerous witches who are hunting you. She has powers she never knew about, and we will need her help to defeat the coven and protect what could easily be the world. How is that difficult?” “She is going to need protection too.” “Right now, the Balor coven doesn’t know she exists. She will be safe while you train her.” Daphne cut him off, “Train? How am I supposed to train her? I still need to be in training myself.” “I have faith in you, I am sure that you will do just fine with her.” “Who has powers?” Lizzy walked through the kitchen door. “What are you talking about?” Caleb smiled at Daphne, “See, I told you, it will be easy to tell her. She already knows.” Caleb looked at Lizzy, “You heard the voice today, right? Only people who are in tune with what is going on around them could have heard it, or they have a gift. No one else in the building heard it, just you, me, and Daphne, and you don’t know what is really going on, so, you must have powers.” Lizzy looked between Caleb and Daphne, “You have got to be kidding me. I don’t have powers, I am not a witch, and I have only ever known one witch in my life. That is you, Daphne. No one else.” “Sometimes there are people who have powers passed from very distant relatives. It can skip generations.” Caleb told her, “You may have had a great-great-grandmother who had powers, and they just so happened to show up in you.” “Some witches get their powers from deities as well. They are not nearly as powerful as a natural-born witch, but they can grow their powers to be just as good as a natural-born witch,” Daphne added. “So you mean to tell me, you think I have powers, and you are just now telling me.” Lizzy looked almost outraged. “I didn’t think to ask, and I am not one to check everyone I meet.” Daphne rolled her eyes. “There is a way to find out,” Caleb was pulling from the books he read when he was studying to be a protector. “Daphne, you were taught how to do it right?” Daphne gave an offended huff, “Yes, I think I would know how.” She stepped toward Lizzy and held out her hands, “This won’t hurt, it will just tingle a little.” Caleb loved to watch this part. He had seen it done before, it was almost beautiful and mesmerizing. Daphne suddenly had a sphere of fire sitting in her hands and motioned Lizzy to hold out her hands. Then Daphne motioned to hand the fire to Lizzy, but she jerked away. “You have to trust me and the flame. It won’t burn you, even if you can’t hold it.” Daphne tried again, and Caleb could see the fear in Lizzy’s eyes. The flame rolled easily into Lizzy’s hand. She gave an excited gasp, “Oh my god, this is so cool.” “Move the ball from hand to hand,” Caleb instructed. This is where it gets fun, the thought. The next second, the ball started to dance between Lizzy’s hands and then Daphne produced a sphere of light. After they exchanged the spheres back and forth for a few minutes, both spheres burnt out and Lizzy stared at her hands. “See, you ma’am, are a witch,” Caleb smiled at her. “Now do we need to explain the rest, or did you hear that part?” “I think I need the rest explained too.” Caleb looked over at Daphne, “You saw the vision, I didn’t. Tag, sweetheart, you’re it.”
