Chapter 5 : The Trial Of Resilience

981 Words
The first trial was over. But nobody celebrated. The silence that filled the shrine was heavier than before. The surviving hunters stood among the remains of the battlefield, exhausted and injured. Their weapons were damaged, their bodies were covered with wounds, and their confidence had been completely shattered. They had entered the dungeon believing it was an easy E-rank raid. Now they understood. This place was not a dungeon. It was a graveyard. A graveyard waiting for more names. Ethan looked around at his teammates. Ten hunters had entered the shrine. Now only a few were still capable of fighting. Lucas was unconscious. Daniel could barely move. Aaron's shield was broken. Mira's mana was almost completely empty. Even Victor, the strongest among them, was struggling to remain standing. "We passed..." Ryan whispered. Nobody answered. Because everyone knew the truth. They had passed the first trial by surviving. But the shrine had not shown them mercy. It had simply decided they were still useful. --- A deep sound suddenly echoed. BOOOOOOM. The hunters immediately raised their weapons. The giant king statue sitting on the throne moved. For a moment, nobody breathed. The king slowly stood. The movement alone caused the entire shrine to shake. Dust fell from the ceiling. The massive sword in his hand dragged across the ground, leaving a deep mark on the stone floor. The hunters stared upward. They had fought the ancient knights. But this was different. The knights were warriors. This creature was something else. A ruler. A monster that stood above everything in this place. The king looked down at them. That same terrifying grin appeared on his face. No words. No explanation. Only that cruel smile. Then he stepped forward. BOOM. The impact shook the entire hall. The hunters felt the ground move beneath their feet. Another step. BOOM. The king was approaching. Victor's expression changed. "Everyone move!" The hunters scattered. The king lifted his enormous foot and brought it down. The force of the impact sent a powerful shockwave through the room. Several hunters were crushed, blood spilling across the ancient floor. The message appeared above them. [SECOND TRIAL: RESILIENCE] [SURVIVE FOR 10 MINUTES] [PROVE YOUR STAMINA AND WILLPOWER] Ethan stared at the words. Ten minutes. That was all they needed. But looking at the giant figure before them... Ten minutes felt like an eternity. --- The king continued walking. He wasn't fighting them. He wasn't using complicated skills. He wasn't even using his weapon. He was simply moving. And that alone was enough. Every step was a disaster. The hunters had to constantly move, dodge, and protect each other. The slightest mistake meant being crushed in the overwhelming force of his attacks. "Ethan!" Lena shouted. Ethan turned. A fallen piece of stone was heading toward her. He rushed forward. Using his ability, he strengthened his body and pushed the debris away. His arms trembled from the impact. "Are you okay?" Lena nodded. "But you..." Ethan ignored his pain. "I'm fine." She knew he was lying. But she also knew Ethan was the type of person who would rather suffer himself than watch someone else fall. --- The timer continued. 8 minutes remaining. The hunters were already exhausted. They had just survived the first trial. They had no time to recover. Aaron stood in front of the group, using his damaged shield to block the shockwaves. "This thing isn't even trying!" He shouted. Victor looked at the king. He understood. The king wasn't fighting seriously. It was testing them. Seeing how long they could endure. Seeing who would continue standing. "Don't stop moving!" Victor ordered. "If we stop, we fail!" --- 6 minutes remaining. The team became smaller. Some hunters could no longer continue. They had reached their limits. Lena tried healing everyone, but even her ability had limits. Mira leaned against the wall, struggling to breathe. "I don't understand..." She looked at the king. "Why would a place like this exist?" Nobody answered. Because nobody knew. The only thing they knew was that the shrine was judging them. And it was waiting to see what kind of people they truly were. --- 4 minutes remaining. Ethan fell to one knee. His body felt heavy. His energy was almost gone. His ability had been pushed beyond its limit. For years, he had trained. For years, he had entered dangerous dungeons. But he had never faced something like this. A normal hunter would have given up. A normal person would have run. But Ethan remembered every person who had called him weak. Every person who believed he was useless. He remembered why he became a hunter. Not for fame. Not for recognition. But because someone had to stand forward. Slowly... Ethan stood again. Victor noticed. "You can still move?" Ethan looked at him. "I have to." Victor stared for a moment. Then he smiled. "You're really unbelievable." --- 1 minute remaining. The king raised his foot once more. Everyone prepared themselves. This final minute felt longer than the entire battle. Their bodies screamed at them to stop. Their minds told them they couldn't continue. But they stayed standing. Together. The timer reached its final seconds. 10... 9... 8... The hunters held their positions. 3... 2... 1... The shrine became silent. Then the message appeared. [SECOND TRIAL: COMPLETED] The surviving hunters collapsed. Not because they were defeated. Because they had finally been allowed to rest. Ethan lay on the cold stone floor, staring at the dark ceiling. Two trials. And the king was still standing. The worst part was... He knew there was still one final trial remaining. The trial that had been written differently from the others. The Trial of Sacrifice. And deep inside Ethan's heart... He had a terrible feeling. That the final test would not ask them to prove their strength. It would ask them to prove what they were willing to lose.
