As the stench of humiliation clung to me, I couldn't help but question my decision to work for someone as inhumane as Anthony. He seemed to possess an otherworldly level of cruelty that left me doubting my ability to last even three months in his presence but I didn’t have a choice, I had signed the papers.
The stress of multiple trips to the kitchen had taken a toll on my feet, and the crowded elevator had resulted in a coffee stain on my shirt in a rather awkward spot. It was around my left n****e, forcing me to hold the coffee cup so high to cover the awkwardness of people thinking I was breastfeeding.
Lost and disoriented in the massive building, I struggled to find my way around, adding to my growing sense of inadequacy. Anthony had given me a task to handle his weekly schedule, but the unfamiliarity with the software and the building only added to the pressure mounting on me.
Despite all the chaos, I couldn't escape the hunger gnawing at my stomach as I heard its roar. The long and eventful day had caused me to forget about eating entirely.
The day didn’t need my permission to move and soon the clock struck 2:15 pm, and the lunch room became a haven of mouthwatering delights. The array of snacks tempted my palate, but I opted for the comforting familiarity of a croissant and a bottle of water from the fridge. As I closed the door, fate seemed to intervene, and I collided with a tall, charming stranger named Klaus.
With his dark skin, brown hair, and that captivating smile, I couldn't help but wonder about the origin of his name. However, to my surprise, he claimed he hadn't seen "The Originals" movie, ruling out my initial theory. But his engaging personality made up for any pop culture references we may have missed.
The coffee stain on my shirt, a result of my eventful day, turned out to be a serendipitous conversation starter. In no time, Klaus and I were chatting away as if we were old friends. His warmth and openness instantly put me at ease, and he revealed that he had been a part of the software development department for a couple of years.
Klaus's keen observation of me as a newcomer spoke volumes about his popular and outgoing nature. In a company with nearly a thousand staff, only someone with an exceptional personality would take notice of a new face so quickly.
As the day unfolded, the chance encounter with Klaus added a glimmer of hope to my daunting experience at the company. The prospect of forming a genuine connection amidst the chaos and uncertainty of the day was a little calming. Meeting Klaus opened up the possibility of new friendships and alliances that could change the course of my journey in the McCarthy enterprise.
In the mysterious world of the company, Klaus revealed the secret powers of the software to me. Unveiling the hidden schedule matrix, I saw a glimpse into the lives of my colleagues, with their parties and whereabouts exposed. Yet, there was a twist - the intriguing challenge of merging schedules to create a two-hour block for Mr. Anthony. My mind raced with wild theories about what he could be up to during those uninterrupted hours.
As the clock ticked away, my heart raced with dread. The fear I felt reminded me of my childhood days in Nigeria, knowing the punishment that awaited me if I returned home late from school. The memories of those dreaded whoopings flooded my mind, making me tremble.
Finally, I arrived at the office, pressed the bell, and waited anxiously for the green light. Ten long minutes passed before he glanced up from his computer. With a stern tone, he demanded to know the reason for my tardiness.
I stuttered as I presented the schedule, my voice betraying my intense fear. The weight of his presence intimidated me, and I could feel my confidence crumbling with each passing moment.
"You are late," he stated bluntly, his eyes piercing into mine.
In an attempt to defend myself, I meekly replied, "Just by a few minutes, sir."
But his response was harsh and unforgiving. "What did you just say?" he asked, his anger building.
At that moment, I regretted uttering those words, wishing I could take them back. My apology seemed to have little effect as he continued to berate me, raising his voice with each sentence. The weight of his disapproval felt suffocating.
"Your first day here, and you can't get anything done right!" he yelled, his frustration evident.
Again, I tried to apologize, but his anger only intensified. "No, no, no! Absolutely not!" he screamed, leaving me feeling utterly defeated. I couldn't fathom how anyone could be so harsh, and his words cut deep, making me question my abilities and self-worth.
At that intense moment, I couldn't fathom why my carefully crafted schedule had received such harsh criticism. I followed Klaus's instructions to the letter, merging calendars and rearranging events as requested. But when Anthony demanded to know where "Big Bang" was on the schedule, my mind went blank.
I searched the weekly schedule, hoping to miraculously find the missing event, but it was nowhere to be seen. Anthony's impatience grew, and he questioned my apparent cluelessness. I desperately wanted to impress him, but the truth was I didn't understand the significance of any of the events listed, including "Big Bang."
In my attempt to organize the schedule, I prioritized events based on the number of attendees, replacing less significant-sounding events with more sophisticated ones. Unfortunately, this approach led me to overlook crucial entries, including "Big Bang," which I had mistakenly assumed was unimportant.
Anthony's frustration reached its peak as he expressed his need for the elusive "Big Bang" and tossed the printed schedule to the ground. In my haste to fix the situation, I assured him I would "get him his Big Bang," unsure whether it was a noun or a verb, and quickly left his office.
Outside, I nearly collided with Veronica, who noticed my evident frustration and smiled knowingly. She had her motives, as our contract extended for three months, and she wasn't going to let me off the hook easily.
The enigmatic "Big Bang" session became a puzzle I couldn't ignore, and I turned to Veronica for answers. Her reaction was surprising, as she immediately checked me for injuries, assuming Anthony's anger might have escalated to violence. Relieved that I was physically unharmed, she urged me to rectify the situation and get Anthony his "Big Bang moment."
Curiosity gnawed at me, wondering what was so crucial about this mysterious event that had thrown Anthony into a fit of rage. However, time was of the essence, and both Veronica and I were in a hurry. I quickly prepared a new draft of the schedule, determined to appease the untamed beast that was my CEO.
Presenting the revised schedule to Anthony, he merely nodded, leaving me to interpret his response on my own. Unsure of his satisfaction, I cautiously made my exit from his office, hoping that I had done enough to pacify his fury.
As the day unfolded, I found myself grappling with conflicting emotions. Working for such a volatile character made it the worst first day at any job I had ever experienced.
Exhausted and drained, I barely kept my eyes open on the sky train ride home. I had only two precious hours to rest before my second job at McDonald's, which added to my overwhelming sense of weariness.
The dynamic between Veronica, Anthony, and Jayden proved to be a complex web of emotions and history. The three had been inseparable since their college days, and their bond was a blend of friendship and something more.
Veronica, determined to forge her path, left her family's business to work as a receptionist in Anthony's company. Unbeknownst to many, her motives ran deeper than just the rejection of her family's beliefs.
“I can see you are making life unbearable for your assistant just as you promised,” Veronica said as she walked into the room after Karen had left.
“I didn’t promise anything, she is just really annoying,” Anthony said.
“Everyone lacks perfection in your eyes hence you use the word annoying. I bet she would quit within 3 months at most” Veronica said.
“I don’t see her lasting that long,” Anthony said.
“Ohh she will,” Veronica said.
“So much faith in her? Anthony asked.
“Well I just think she would hold on at least that long,” Veronica said
“How about we make a bet, if she stays up to 3 months you would give me the Porto Rico guest house,” Veronica asked knowing that Anthony loved that place dearly but so did she.
“And if she leaves earlier what do I get?” Anthony asked.
“My company shares,” Veronica said with a stern look showing her seriousness.
“No takebacks,” Anthony said as he was never one to back down from a challenge, accepted the wager.
“Deal” they chorused.
One thing about the relationship between Veronica and Anthony was that it had been unpredictable over the years. They acted as lovers and yet played like friends. The three had been an inseparable bond ever since college. The three included Veronica, Anthony, and Jayden. They all had a major in finance. Veronica worked for the company as an over-glorified receptionist as that was the only opening at that time when she quit her family business reason being that they did not believe in renewable energy and their products hurt the ozone layer. But despite all those reasons by Veronica she wanted to succeed on her own without her family’s influence. Jayden was not the silver spoon like the other two but they had been like family since college and after college Anthony’s family offered him a job at their company which was too good to refuse.
“Are we getting drinks today?” Veronica asked
“I think I would just head home” Anthony replied
“Early meeting tomorrow?” Veronica asked.
“Yeah,” Anthony said.
“That’s the only reason you would say no to drinks,” Veronica said.
“Good night Veronica,” Anthony said smiling trying to dismiss her before she forced his hand again.
“Have you forgotten our ritual so fast?” Veronica said stopping him from leaving till he had performed it.
Anthony immediately walked up to where she stood and put his hands around her holding her into a warm embrace and putting his hand a bit lower he grabbed one of her ass cheeks giving it a nice squeeze. Their breaths were intertwined as they looked so close together. It was then Anthony took notice of Jayden who had been standing just at the side of the room his face raging in anger. Jayden turned around to leave with the intention to pretend as tho he had not seen what was happening until Anthony called his name
“Jayden??” Anthony said with a mix of fear and shame in his eyes.
