Episode4:What He Didn’t Say

704 Words
What He Didn’t Say The car was black, unmarked, and smelled very nice from what I can perceive on the outside. I can't lie… from the looks of the car before me. It made me feel like I had to make a decision before I entered. So, I didn’t get in. Not yet at least, because Zack was still standing on the front steps, and I couldn’t just go without saying anything to him. “Anna.” He came down the steps two at a time, ignoring the escort’s pointed look at his watch. “You don’t have to just… go. Not like this.” “I don’t think I have a choice.” “There’s always a…” “Zack,” I said his name in a soft manner and to my surprise.. It stopped him. “If I fight this, it’s worse for both of us. You heard him right ?? This isn’t something Voss controls anymore.” He looked like he wanted to argue anyway, but he held himself. It was the thing I loved most about him and the thing that scared me most, because Zack fighting for me had never once made anything safer or easy. That boy is really stubborn. The whole situation made me feel bad because it just made him a target too. “I’ll find out where they’re taking you,” he said. “I’ll come.” “Don’t.” “Anna..” “If you show up demanding answers, they’ll assume you know something about me and this house and you know that won’t be good for any of us.” I glanced past him, toward the study window where I could just see Voss’s shadow as he was watching us. “I need you safe more than I need you nearby right now.” Zac’s facial expression suddenly changed to a sad one. “That’s not your call to make either.” “Maybe.. or maybe not but I’m making it.” He closed the distance between us before I could stop him. His forehead hit mine in a gentle manner. “Come back,” he said. “Be really careful please.” He said in a very low tone. “I don’t know if that’s up to me.” “Then I’ll make it up to me.” He replied instantly. I didn’t have an answer for that but I got inside the car instead. I guess staying any longer meant either of us saying something we wouldn’t be able to take back I’m glad we said our goodbyes. It made me feel a bit calmer. The car started moving before I could look backwards through the glass. Voss was still at the window. Seems, he didn’t move an inch before. The escort in the front seat didn’t say a word since I’d gotten in, which was fine by me honestly. If it was a movie, I’d have been interrogated once more by now. Besides, I had nothing to say.. neither did I have anything to ask him. I watched the academy grounds shrink behind us.. the training yard, the east wing, the cellar literally everything. We were twenty minutes into the drive and suddenly, the radio turned on by itself. The voice that spoke was so low that the driver had to lean in to hear what the person was saying. I only got some parts of what the person said but not everything. Confirmed match?? Bloodline unclear. Proceed to the secondary location, not the seat. The driver’s eyes moved to the rearview mirror, looking at me and looking away immediately. Weird, I wonder why he did that. “Where are we going?” I asked. He didn’t answer. “You said the Council seat. Draeus said the Council seat.” Still nothing, except his hands tightening on the wheel and the car picking up speed on the road. I pressed my palm flat against the window and watched unfamiliar trees blur past, my own reflection ghosted over them, and understood that it was too late to do anything about it. So, I’m guessing whatever waited for me at the end of this road and it’s for sure wasn’t the Council.
