The warm breeze brought me a sense of absolute calm and contentment. It had been a while yet since I had felt this relaxed. This warm.
Maybe it’s because things are finally going your way...
Everything felt more in place, more in harmony and the possibilities of my future seemed endless. Like I could finally take a deep breath of fresh air.
I was suffocated for so long but this...this is the breakthrough I have been waiting for...
“You seem to be in a great mood today, Mrs. Alexander.”
Ace stated, bringing me back to the present as I granted him a wide smile, pleased to be having a relaxed conversation with the usually rigid man.
I’m making new friends...Even though he’s a little more dangerous than most of my friends...
“It's an absolutely beautiful day, isn’t it, Ace? Everything is falling perfectly into place.”
Ace glanced at Clover, the two sharing a look that I was not privy to and I did not want to be. The day was too bright, too perfect to overanalyze everything.
And I have to focus on what’s to come...
“We’ve arrived.”
Clover stated just as he parked the car on the side, the sight of the hotel brought a small smile to my lips. Seeing Ash after such a long time brought me absolute warmth.
I missed my friend more than I thought I had. The very thought brought tears to my eyes.
Focus, Emilia... You have to finish what you started...
“Thank you, Clover. Just a moment...I must speak to my husband.”
The very mention of Soren awakened the butterflies in my stomach with a vengeance, but I quashed them as best I could as I dialed the number I had never used before.
That’s about to change...
He picked it up on the first ring.
“This is a surprising development. I didn’t think this day would ever come.”
His voice was smooth and deep and made my heart skip a literal beat. Goosebumps spread across my skin and I hated it as I did. I could not silence the small part of me that loved the fact that he was so attentive.
“Well, don’t get so used to it. This is simply out of necessity, nothing more.”
I tried to salvage the situation, to explain away my wandering emotions. Feelings I should not possess when it came to him and our fake marriage and yet...
“It is still a special moment for me, no matter your half-hearted explanations.”
The smirk in his voice was crystal clear. I knew his mannerisms well enough now to know exactly the change of emotions coursing through him.
Well, I am not an expert, but it’s good enough considering before...
“Where are you? What are you up to? Or are your activities too X-rated for my virgin ears?”
His chuckle literally stole my breath away, momentarily making me forget each and every single plan I had set and what was to come.
“I doubt anything would be too much for my Queen.”
And he just had to say that...Bastard knows exactly what he’s doing, huh?
“I have arrived at my next meeting. Contrary to popular belief, Mafia Dons do have more work than just selling drugs and kidnapping pretty girls.”
The chuckle came suddenly, stunning both me and my husband, who released his own. It was a moment that imprinted it into my mind, ingrained into the depths of me.
“Did you just make a joke, albeit a bad one??”
I urged, earning a scoff from my husband.
“I guess I could do better.”
He sounded oddly determined and I didn’t know why, but that brought a wider smile to my lips than I thought possible, considering the situation.
Considering what I’m about to do...
“I don’t think you’ll have the time for that, husband. Especially with the little surprise, I have for you.”
My words seemed to make him pause, allowing me enough time to pull out the small device within my bag. One that was behind the sleepiness I had been fighting all day.
My sleepless night was not in vain...
“What did you do, my love?”
Suspicion dripped from his voice, showcasing the supernatural kind of intuition that was famed throughout the Underworld. It was truly a marvel, but not enough for what was to come.
“My...my, aren’t you suspicious? You should be a little more trusting of your wife.”
“That would be a massive mistake when my wife is as feisty and diabolical as mine is. I would never put it past you to do something you probably shouldn’t.”
He was fishing, reaching, and trying to extract what was waiting for him. I grinned, alive with the victory that came with cornering my husband.
A man who has never been cornered before.
“Well, I have never been one to follow rules or listen to authority. Nobody owns me and this is a lesson I don’t plan on letting you forget soon.”
“Emilia...what did you do?”
His voice was dark and threatening and surfaced unbidden emotions within me. Determination consumed me more than my hesitation, pushing me to finger the small device in my hand.
“Nothing much. Just got you some really pretty fireworks. I do hope you enjoy my display of affection, my love.”
My voice was sweetly saccharine even as I pressed the button i knew would deliver my message. My promise for more than he could ever be prepared for.
I could hear the explosions of each and every single one of his cars, the chaos that ensued that satisfied and riled up the madness within me.
Diesel’s reports had been more efficient than I ever thought they could be. He was the muse for my first attack to get my life back.
“Emilia...”
“Remember this day, my husband. Remember it as the first and last day I will ever show you mercy. This was my calling card. The beginning of the end for you. Countdown your days, enjoy them because they will soon be over and I will soon be free. Because of that, you have my f*****g promise.”
I hung up, staring at my phone with wide, sparkling eyes and a heart beating away with immense emotion. I did it. Take the first step towards destroying my husband and freeing myself.
One step at a time...
