A knock on the door made me jump, pulling me from my anxiety addled thoughts as I shoved the last of my make up into my bag.
My mind could not stop replaying the words he had spoken before pushing me to pack my bags. He was angry, furious and ready for absolute destruction.
I could not help but worry for the men who had dared cross him. Never had I seen him so angry. So ready for destruction. He had harnessed his sin and was prepared for a battle.
Although their voices were muffled by the door, the urgency in their footsteps and their raised tones made my body grow cold.
Grabbing my bags, I emerged into the room just as Soren came into view, the sight of his familiar gun making me pause momentarily as warning bells sounded within my head.
“Are guns really necessary if we are just going to the airport?...unless something is wrong.”
I muttered the last part, my heart stuttering as I watched my husband closely. He said nothing, his actions showing more as he approached me with sure fire steps.
“We have company, malyshka. I am going to need you to stay by my side, no matter what. Are we clear?”
Gone was the morning playfulness. This was the King of Sin who now portrayed an intensity beyond s*x.
It was still incredibly attractive, his push for control and calm, collective demeanour despite the people gunning for our heads.
“Well, it’s not like I quite have a choice. My life is in your hands, Mr. Alexander.”
I muttered, knowing well enough that this was not the time to be a smart ass. He seemed pleased by my response, his finger brushing the side of my face softly, reverently and in a way that left goosebumps on my skin.
Why does he do things like this? Why does he make me momentarily doubt my sanity and my urge to follow through with our contract?
“We have to leave, Sir.”
The guard stated, his words pulling us both from our shared moment. Moments that were becoming too many to count and too dangerous for my heart.
The hallway was clear, marked only by one of our other guards who seemed to ensure no other guests appeared or unwelcome surprises.
My heart beat fast within my chest, my hand held tightly in his own as we entered the elevator and made our way to the ground.
These were the moments I feared, the moments that I knew would come. Death was not something that I feared. It was more of an inconvenience.
I still had too much to do. And dying in his war didn’t seem all too great. Being collateral damage was certainly not what I had worked so hard for.
The ground floor was deserted, the guests eerily nowhere to be seen.
“Evacuation was a success. A gas leak was used to explain away the sudden move. Law enforcement has been adequately compensated.”
The guard explained, almost as if reading my thoughts. Soren nodded, his grip on my hand tightening whilst he held the gun in his other hand.
He was on high alert, his eyes trailing through every nook and cranny of the room as we proceeded towards the get away car right outside the glass revolving doors.
In this moment, he was the lethal killer who everyone knew and feared. I processed it all, taking in every single bit of information despite the guilt I internalised.
He was trying to keep me safe and yet I was devising ways to kill him and leave this insane contract marriage.
I really hate the way my mind works...
The sound of gun shots pulled me from my thoughts as I instinctively ducked for cover just as Soren lifted his gun and began to take out our opponents.
His shots were accurate, each of them headshots that showcased his absolute experience and dominance with a gun.
It was both awe inspiring and fear inducing as every single one of them went down without fail, head shots spilling copious amounts of blood out of them.
Although the sight made my empty stomach roil, it was not disturbing enough to elicit any kind of emotion from me.
I must be more dead inside than I thought I was...
Our two guards were just as impressive, each of them taking what seemed to be a formation as they handled the two remaining assailant’s attacks flawlessly.
So they are part of the reason why Soren is as untouchable as they claim he is...
We burst through the glass doors, the sight of the car sending a pang of relief through me. The person behind the wheel, though, made me blanch as Diesel’s blood laden face and unsettling grin came into view.
“Hey sis in law! So good to see you in one piece and looking as sexy as always!”
He shouted, his words making me slightly chuckle despite the situation. I glanced down at my outfit, the white crop top, blue jeans and black combat boots not as outstanding as he made it seem like.
“Shut the hell up, Diesel and get us out of here!”
Soren shouted, aiming his gun for the approaching mercenary before he got a shot off. Diesel cackled like a mad man, grinning wide at the approaching black SUV that was clearly filled with reinforcements.
And not ours judging by the gapes on Soren and the other guard’s faces.
“It’s happening, Wrath! It’s f*****g Colombia!!”
Diesel shouted, launching out of the car with a damn grenade launcher.
“He wouldn’t f*****g dare!”
I muttered, disbelief clouding my features as I watched Diesel release a damn grenade right towards the approaching car.
“That f*****g psychopath. He does have a point though.”
Soren chuckled darkly, clearly both impressed and pissed at Diesel’s blatant ignoring of his orders to get us out.
My husband’s arms wrapped around me, keeping me close and safe from the shrapnel that rained down from the wreck.
Each of their gazes were fixated on the flaming car.
Which was why none of them could see the two approaching men, their guns raised and trained on my husband and I.
Fuck. My. Life...
My body reacted instinctually as I wrenched my hand out of Soren’s hold and launched towards the two men who had just raised their guns.
Muscle memory kicked in instantly as all the mixed martial arts lessons came to the fore, pushing me to disarm one of them with a high kick that sent him sprawling to the ground.
The other man turned his gun of me, squeezing out a shot just as I ducked before grabbing his arm.
“You really shouldn’t have done that.”
I muttered, twisting and breaking his arm that elicited a loud groan of pain from him. I grabbed his gun out of his broken arm, pointing it right at the one on the ground who was about to get back up.
“Stay the f**k down or I will empty this clip into your head.”
I was furious, confused by emotions but latching onto the anger either way that fuelled my adrenaline.
I need to latch onto it or I will lose my damn mind in this f****d up situation...
“Holy fuck...did she just pull an Israel Adesanya? Our sister in law is a vault of delightful secrets. So f*****g hot...”
Diesel muttered, his eyes alit with wonder and excitement as he grinned wide at me.
“Who is that?”
One of the guards muttered, earning a shrug from the other as the third got into the driver’s seat, preparing us to roll out.
“Yes she is...”
Soren muttered in response to Diesel’s words, his expression revealing nothing to me as he approached my position. My heart, which was beating wildly in my chest, sped up all the more as we faced off, none of us saying anything.
Our gazes relayed more as they settled on the gun in my hands. A gun that could probably free me.
You know well enough that he isn’t vulnerable, Emilia...
The rational part of me argued, reminding me of the incredible shot he was. His physical, fighting abilities were just as great if not better, no doubt.
“Well then, malenkiy’zayka. Make up your mind...”
He stated, the grin on his lips the first sign of true emotion as he took an even closer step towards me. It took everything within me not to go on defense mode at the sight of movement, his hand gently latching onto my own before he lifted it to his forehead.
“We’ve had this conversation before, Soren. I won’t hesitate to get out of this damn contract.”
I muttered, willing my body not to give into the volatile emotions within me.
This was everything I had been obsessing about. So why am I struggling to keep my hands from shaking?...
“Then do it.”
He was unflinching, prepared for any outcome despite the stunned expressions on each of his guard’s faces.
“Holy fuck...she might actually get this done.”
Diesel cheered, his excitement reminding me of the realness of the situation.
Releasing a small sigh, I let go of the gun, leaving it in my husband’s hand before walking past him and towards the waiting car and towards Diesel’s playfully frowning form.
“If I’m going to beat you, it won’t be in the middle of a cluster f**k. Wouldn’t want you to make any excuses about how I absolutely destroyed you. Now, can we please get the hell away from the people trying to kill us? There might be more reinforcements soon.”
I stated, sliding into the back seat of the car. Several seconds passed before two shots rang out that made me jump slightly. My two hostages had suffered the same fate of their counterparts.
We were on our way soon after, the black seven seater SUV flying down the streets and towards the airport. I closed my eyes, leaning my head against my seat as the men around me conversed.
Soren was at the front, his conversation with the driver shifting to a language I could not comprehend. He was yet to respond to my little jibe.
Heck, I’m yet to understand why the f**k I just did that... They wouldn’t have killed me.
We have a contract. I would have walked away from all of this so why did I choke?!
“That was anti-climatic. I really did expect a little bit more from you, sis in law.”
Diesel declared from beside me, his words making me chuckle as I playfully rolled my eyes at him.
“Welcome to the damn club. Now leave me alone, you absolute psychopath.”
My words were compliments more than insults and true enough, Diesel’s laugh was testament enough which earned me a number of stunned looks from the two guards seated behind us.
“I would listen but you’ve, unfortunately, been making my little bird sad and I don’t like that. I’m here to make sure you make it right.”
Although the hint of playfulness was there, the silent meaning behind it was clear enough to push me to open my eyes and turn to look at the Sin of Greed.
The air seemed to grow cold as we faced off, neither one of us showcasing our true emotions. I could feel the others glance at us, their expressions clouded with worry.
All but Soren who seemed ready for anything.
“Are you threatening me, face tats? About my best friend?”
The chill in my tone and new found nickname seemed to make Diesel pause before a chuckle escaped his lips. Everyone seemed to release a breath, clearly worried for me and my own threatening comment.
“Well, it will be if you don’t call her. She misses you. She’s worried about you. And your other friend. You might have a better chance at reassuring her than I can. She’s been trying-and failing- to avoid me.”
He seemed genuinely amused by my friend’s actions at warding him off. It was both terrifying and amusing to watch the satisfied grin stretch across his lips as he receded into his memories.
“You all need to get your stalker issues handled...Christ, is Kenji the only normal one among you all on the stalking department?”
Diesel let out a snort and chuckle, seeming to hold back on revealing anything about the Sin of Pride.
So some things are off the table.
“Thank you. For telling me, Diesel. I will call her as soon as I get back alive but if you threaten me again, I will keep every single secret that could help you stop looking like the mad man you are in front of my friend and start looking like Mr right to her to myself.”
My smile was serene despite the gape on Diesel’s face that would have been comical were it not for the loud, unhinged laugh he released after.
Fucking psychopath... I chuckled along, refusing to judge the part of me that found him endearing and amusing.
“You are Everything, Sis in law. My little bird is f*****g perfect but you are our very own spitfire. You’d be perfect for my Division.”
Diesel declared, his grin unsettling me at the mention of ‘Division’ and Soren’s glare through the viewing mirror as he finished his call.
“Diesel...”
Our resident psychopath instantly raised his hands, seeming to realize his mistake as a nervous chuckle escaped him.
“We have confirmation. The Russians have not made any moves.”
One of the guards stated, his update silencing every single person in the car. I frowned, confused and completely in the dark at the darkness that shrouded the two Sins.
I’m both glad and disappointed that I don’t know anything about what they’re talking about...
“Well then, our trip was certainly not in vain it seems.”
Diesel muttered darkly, cracking his knuckles threateningly, his eyes swirling with danger and darkness...
