CHAPTER VIII

Iris had spent months chasing a ghost. Ever since watching her father's final recording inside the safe house, one question had haunted every step of her investigation. Who knew the plan before the attack? Every document she recovered, every ledger hidden beneath false shelves, and every witness who survived long enough to speak pointed toward one possibility. There had been another objective besides destroying her father's empire. Someone had taken a child. The records were fragmented, buried beneath false identities and fabricated adoption papers, but one name continued appearing in places it shouldn't. Sometimes it was crossed out. Other times it had been replaced entirely. Yet the dates never changed. Iris followed every trace. Every trail ended the same way. A girl with a different name. A different birthday. A different life. Each identity had existed for only a few years before disappearing again, replaced by another carefully constructed history. Someone had rewritten the girl's life over and over, ensuring no one could ever follow the trail. Yet every photograph carried the same unmistakable features. The same amber eyes. The same small crescent-shaped birthmark behind her right ear. The mark Iris had kissed countless times when they were children. Her little sister. Alive. For fifteen years, everyone had believed Amara died the night their family's estate burned. She hadn't. She had simply vanished. The discovery explained something Iris had never understood. No body had ever been recovered. No journal inside the underground vault had confirmed Amara's death. Even her father's final recording had carefully referred only to Iris surviving. He had never said Amara was gone. Someone had made sure everyone believed she was. Iris and Silas followed the newest lead to an elegant estate hidden behind high stone walls on the outskirts of the city. The property stood in sharp contrast to the abandoned warehouses, safe houses, and criminal compounds they had spent months infiltrating. Fresh flowers lined the entrance. Gardeners quietly tended the grounds. Luxury cars entered through the front gate without inspection. Unlike the compounds owned by syndicates, this place looked ordinary. Children played in the gardens. Employees moved about calmly. Security was almost invisible. Too invisible. Iris immediately noticed tiny surveillance cameras hidden among decorative lights. Several security officers wore ordinary business suits instead of tactical uniforms. Every movement appeared natural. Every position offered a clear line of sight. "They're professionals," Silas whispered. Iris nodded. "They don't want visitors to know they're protected." She remembered Dante's lessons. The strongest defenses were often the ones people never noticed. They slipped inside after nightfall. Using maintenance corridors mapped from old architectural records, they moved quietly through the estate without triggering alarms. Iris searched room after room until she reached a private library. The room smelled of old books and polished wood. Shelves stretched from floor to ceiling. A fire burned quietly inside an ornate fireplace despite the warm evening. There, above a fireplace, hung dozens of family photographs. Iris stopped breathing. Every picture showed the same smiling young woman growing older through the years. Birthday celebrations. School graduations. Family vacations. A life. A real life. One she had never been allowed to share. A smiling teenage girl stood beside an older man. She was taller now. Her hair was shorter. But Iris recognized her instantly. "Amara..." The frame slipped from Iris's hand. The glass shattered softly against the wooden floor. Fifteen years. She was alive. Silas quietly picked up the photograph. "The man beside her..." Iris already knew. She had seen his face in intelligence reports. She had encountered his name countless times after discovering her father's hidden letter about the mysterious council. Every investigation eventually led toward him before abruptly ending. Sebastian Hale. The one person her investigation always circled back to but never reached. A respected businessman. A philanthropist. A political adviser. Publicly, he funded hospitals, schools, and humanitarian programs. Privately, Iris believed he was the invisible architect manipulating syndicates, corrupt officials, and assassins from the shadows. The man she had spent months trying to expose. The same man her father had unknowingly described. "They don't lead organizations." "They make organizations believe every decision was their own." Iris suddenly wondered if Sebastian Hale had been standing beside her father long before the betrayal. He had raised Amara. Footsteps echoed through the hallway. Iris quickly hid behind the shelves. Silas disappeared into the shadows near the doorway. The library door opened. A young woman stepped inside carrying several books. Iris's heart nearly stopped. Amara. She looked older. Stronger. Confident. Nothing like the frightened little girl Iris remembered hiding inside the secret compartment all those years ago. There was no fear in her posture. Only quiet certainty. Iris stepped into the light before she could lose her courage. "Amara." The young woman froze. Their eyes met. For one brief moment... Neither spoke. Time itself seemed to stop. Iris smiled through tears. "It's me." No response. "You don't remember me?" Amara slowly placed the books on the table. "I know exactly who you are." Iris's smile faded. "You do?" "You're Iris." Her voice was calm. "The woman responsible for destroying my family." Iris felt as though the floor had disappeared beneath her. "What?" "You shouldn't have come here." Iris shook her head. "Amara... I'm your sister." "I don't have a sister." "You do." Iris took one cautious step forward. "I've spent years looking for you." Amara's hand moved instinctively toward the pistol hidden beneath her jacket. The motion was smooth. Practiced. Sebastian Hale hadn't merely raised her. Someone had trained her. "You've spent years murdering people." Iris stopped. Images flashed through her mind. The interrogations. The gunfights. The bodies left behind during her search for the conspiracy. Everything she had done believing she was moving closer to justice. "I know what you've done." Amara's eyes filled with anger. "I've read the reports." "The explosions." "The interrogations." "The bodies left behind." Iris tried to explain. "They were involved in—" "They were human beings!" Amara interrupted. "You call it justice." "I call it murder." Iris stood speechless. None of this made sense. Every story Amara knew had clearly been built upon lies. "I was there that night," Iris whispered. "I watched our parents die." Amara stared at her. "No." "You ran away." The words struck harder than any bullet. Iris blinked. "What did you say?" "You abandoned them." Iris couldn't believe what she was hearing. "No..." "You hid while everyone else died." Iris's voice broke. "I was a child." "So was I." Silence consumed the room. Iris remembered her father's recording. He had planned to save both daughters. Someone had replaced his rescue team with killers. Now she realized the betrayal hadn't ended there. Someone had stolen Amara's future as well. Finally Amara spoke again. "My father found me." Iris frowned. "Sebastian Hale isn't your father." "He is." "He raised me." "He protected me." "He told me the truth." Iris's pulse quickened. "What truth?" Amara's expression hardened. "That Iris Valtiere betrayed our family." Iris stared at her in disbelief. "No..." "You stole Father's records." "You exposed his allies." "You disappeared before the attack." Iris could barely breathe. Every accusation sounded carefully constructed. As though someone had rewritten history one sentence at a time. "That's a lie." "It's what happened." "No." "It's what I was told." Iris realized the horrifying truth. Someone had rewritten Amara's entire childhood. Every memory. Every story. Every answer to every question she had ever asked. Sebastian Hale hadn't simply hidden Amara. He had raised her. He had shaped the person she became. He had turned the surviving daughter into someone who would never question him. Iris reached into her jacket slowly. "I have something." Amara immediately drew her pistol. "Don't." Iris froze. "It's just a photograph." "I said don't." Iris carefully placed the old photograph on the floor. It showed two little girls laughing beside a fountain. Iris was ten. Amara was five. Their mother stood behind them with her arms wrapped around both daughters. Iris stepped back. "Take it." Amara hesitated before picking it up. She studied the faded image. Her expression flickered for the first time. Confusion. Recognition. Something deep inside her remembered. A memory buried beneath fifteen years of carefully repeated lies struggled to surface. Then she noticed a handwritten message on the back. "For my brave girls. Promise me you'll always find your way back to each other. —Mom." Amara's hand trembled. Only slightly. Iris saw it. She remembered. Even if only for a second. Then the library doors burst open. Armed guards rushed inside. Sebastian Hale walked calmly through them, dressed in a tailored black suit. He moved with the confidence of a man who had expected this meeting all along. He smiled as though greeting old friends. "So..." His eyes settled on Iris. "The sisters have finally met." Iris raised her weapon. Sebastian didn't react. Instead, he looked at Amara. "You see?" "I told you she'd come." Amara lowered the photograph and stepped beside him. Not behind him. Beside him. A daughter standing with the man she trusted. Sebastian rested a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "She'll say anything to confuse you." Iris's voice cracked. "Amara..." Her sister looked directly into her eyes. There was no hatred. Only certainty. The certainty of someone who believed she was protecting the only family she had ever known. "If you ever come near my father again..." She tightened her grip on the pistol. "I'll stop you myself." Iris stood frozen as Silas pulled her toward a hidden exit. He knew staying meant certain death. They escaped into the darkness seconds before the guards sealed the estate. Neither spoke during the drive back. Iris kept seeing the same image in her mind. Amara standing beside the very man Iris believed had stolen everything from them. She hadn't just lost her sister fifteen years ago. She had found her again. Only to discover that Amara believed Iris was the monster who had destroyed their family. As the city lights passed outside the car window, Iris finally understood another part of her father's warning. The conspiracy hadn't only stolen lives. It had rewritten memories. And somewhere behind Sebastian Hale's calm smile, Iris knew the truth. He hadn't merely hidden Amara from the world. He had spent fifteen years turning Iris's own sister into her greatest obstacle.
