CHAPTER 1

1375 Words
Taylor's soul died the minute she heard him call her. He wasn't supposed to be back until 7pm. At least, that was what the head maid told her. “Hel – lo sir,” she dragged her words, clutching the broom. “Good morning… I mean, afternoon,” she stutters, adding to the awkward atmosphere. He smacked his lips, “Mary!!! Get in here!” his voice resounding in the room. The head maid hurried in, looking from her to him. “You called, Sir Sage.” “Why is she in my room?” he questioned, raising his brow. “I'm sorry, sir. You! Get out of here,” Mary yelled at Taylor. “I'm terribly sorry, sir,” she bowed repeatedly, racing to the door. Sage, who was silently seething with rage, suddenly stood still as Taylor passed by. His hair stood on his skin and his heart raced nonstop. Her scent made him swallow hard with a flushed face. He grabbed Taylor's hand impulsively, startling both women. “Wait! You can leave, Mary,” he said, pulling Taylor closer to himself. “What's your name?” he dropped her arm and then took off his watch. Taylor looked away when he proceeded to pull off his suit. “Gia Lockett,” she answered, observing his reaction. “Gia? That's not the name I got from the cleaning agency,” another man's voice echoed at the entrance of the room. Sage looked her way while the man moved closer to her. “You're not the cleaning lady I hired. You’re lying,” he declared and grabbed her throat before she could comprehend what was happening. “Who are you?!” his voice thundered. “I'm…I'm Gia. Please let me go and I'll explain,” she pleaded, slapping her palms against his fist. “Let her go, Joe,” Sage replied with a calmness that startled Taylor. She expected a similar reaction from him or even a bit more since he had caught her ransacking his room. After Joe released his hold on her neck, she fell on her knees, catching both men off guard. “I'm so sorry for lying, sir Sage. He's right. I'm not supposed to be here. The cleaning lady that was hired by the agency is my neighbor and she had an accident. She begged me to come here instead of her. I'm unemployed and I've always wanted to work at Kinsmen Group. I could not turn her down or miss the opportunity to meet you, sir,” she said, dragging her last words with her face to the ground. “None of that is our concern. You've compromised the security of this house by coming here when you were not asked to,” Joe roared like a volcano ready to erupt. “Please, don't call the agency. My friend could lose her job,” she pleaded, turning to Sage, whose eyes were fixed on her the whole time. Their eyes met but she looked away quickly. “Calm down, Joe. She's just trying to help a friend,” Sage said with a sweet voice that could make coffee taste like honey. His heart terribly races the more he comes close to her. His fangs tickled, stopping him in his tracks. His face held the expression of a child surprised with a doll she had always wanted. “Since you've always wanted to work at Kinsmen, why don't you work for me?” he blurted out, stunning Taylor and Joe. “Sage, you don't even know her,” Joe opposed, staring daggers at Taylor, whose face was covered in sweat. “I don't need to,” Sage replied, unbuttoning his shirt. “But…” Joe started, but Sage stopped him with his hand. “Can you work as my personal assistant? I always need more hands since Joe seemed to be extremely busy tending to my security,” Sage teased, watching Joe fume. Taylor blinked twice and nodded, “Of course, sir. I can do anything you want me to do,” she replied, her eyes still on the ground. She felt uneasy with Sage's intense gaze on her face. “Then it's settled. You can start on Monday. Provide Mary with the necessary details. Joe will send you the information you need. You can leave now,” he added, finally taking off his shirt to reveal a fine set of curvy arms. He had a narrow trunk with a body that anyone would die for. His tattooed arm wasn't even making it easy to look away. “Thank you so much, sir. I don't know the right words to say to express my gratitude. I'm grateful,” she screamed, jumping on her feet and bowing repeatedly as she made for the door. Sage stared intently at her till she left the room. He grabbed his chest; his lips let out a broad smile. His back was against the corner of the room where Joe stood so he could not see his reaction. He caressed his lips, looking at his face in the mirror. She was definitely the one he had been searching for. He could not deny the connection he felt. He would have never imagined that she would be a human. “If you'd ask me, hiring her is a terrible mistake. We're a whole different breed, and having a human in such close proximity is not just dangerous, but it's utter foolishness. For all we know, she could be a mole. Everything I just witnessed feels like a s**t show,” Joe reiterated, clenching his fist. “You mean I'm utterly foolish?” Sage teased, turning to face him. “I'll never dare to insinuate that, Alpha Sage,” Joe stared at his toes. “I understand your concerns. Let's see how it goes. Time will tell if she's a mole,” Sage chuckled, with his finger still caressing his lips. *********** “What’s your status?” a female voice over the phone asked. “Although it turned out different from what we imagined, phase one has been accomplished. I've made contact and created a connection,” Taylor murmured, walking down the streets with an earpod. “What's new?” the voice asked. “Red seems to have a soft spot for Gia. His friend thinks otherwise. Gia's the new PA,” Taylor explained. “Good! You know what to do,” the voice said. “Copy,” Taylor responded, pulling out the earpod. ********** “Sage wants you to stay over tonight to study some documents. You can use the other room you often stay in,” Joe said, watching Taylor as she arranged the papers in Sage's home study. “Noted. I'll inform you when I'm done with it,” Taylor replied without looking at him. “Just so you know, Gia, I can feel it deep inside that you're up to something, and I'm going to prove it,” Joe threatened, leaving the study. Taylor smirked, rolling her eyes at him. Over the past two weeks of learning the ropes while Sage was mostly on a trip, Joe hired three people to tail her. To avoid suspicion, she ensured that they went back with reports to Joe about how she was living a normal life. His bitterness was the least of her worries. After arranging the documents, she ate dinner and went to bed. Everyone did as well. When the clock struck 1am, she snuck into Sage's study. Joe had his eyes on her all day so she couldn't check the other files on Sage's desk. She began to go through the documents, searching for irregularities that could either prove her theory that he was the werewolf that murdered her late husband and three-month-old son or the notorious weapon smuggler in the entire country. Suddenly, a bright light illuminated the dark study. Everyone was supposed to be asleep. She had double-checked and triple-checked. Her body froze and she shut her eyes, searching her brain for words to say. “What are you doing here, Gia?” the usual deep and calm voice resonated behind her. “You cannot hide in the shadows forever; eventually, the light will find you.” - C.S. Lewis.
