CHAPTER 4

1310 Words
“Are you surprised? Oh! You thought I wouldn’t figure that out? I found the cleaning lady. I know how you put in so much effort to get into my house, into my room, and even seduce me,” Sage said, dropping her hand aggressively. Taylor caressed her fingers with her other hand. Her head was spinning with all sorts of thoughts. She had to think up something immediately or risk blowing her cover. “I — I didn't seduce you. And nobody sent me to do anything. You're right! I might have lied about the cleaning lady but all I wanted was to work at Kinsmen Group,” she defended herself, holding both hands over her chest. “What's so special about Kinsmen? Why don't you just tell me why you approached and seduced me?!!” he thundered, scaring the life out of her. “I didn't seduce you. I'd never do that,” she said, forcing out tears from her eyes. “You must think that this is a joke, right?” he said, beckoning at the men who stood by the entrance. Taylor had not noticed them earlier, and the moment she saw them, she felt an adrenaline rush. She could take them all down but that would spell disaster for her cover. She had to stay close to Sage no matter the cost so she paddled her canoe slowly. “What's going on? Who are they?” she asked, wearing a frightened face. Sage's expression had never been so scary since she had met him. His muscles tensed around his folded sleeves. “I'm not going to ask again. Who sent you to spy on me?! You better start talking or this will be the end of you,” he rumbled. Taylor looked down, whimpering and murmuring. “Take her away,” he ordered. “What?! Please, Sage, I'd never lie to you. Please, believe me,” she pleaded, falling to her knees. “You were wrong about me, Gia. You don’t know me. I am that kind of person,” he said, piercing her heart with his words. Even though he was her top suspect and she felt no affection for him, his words still stung her. The men grabbed her and dragged her out to an adjoining room. Sage smashed his hand into the wall and screamed. “I must have been crazy to fall for that deceitful woman. What was I thinking? Humans never change,” he muttered, running his hands through his hair. “Sage?” Joe called, walking in on him as he soliloquized. “Hey, man,” Sage replied, trying to conceal his discomfort about Taylor's current situation. “I have the guys working on the irregularities caused by Augustine. Here’s the drive on his recent escapades. That dude's a real prick,” he commented, grinning as he pulled out a flash drive. Taylor's screams could be heard from behind the door. Sage kept turning on the chair and then stood up to pace the room. “What's going on?” Joe asked. “I knew that your hunch was valid all along. Gia isn't honest and I've been digging into details about her. I’ve overheard her speaking to someone covertly. My ears could not pick it all up but I knew that she was definitely a spy. I wished they were not true because —,” he hesitated, pacing the room and scratching his scalp as Taylor's screams grew louder. “Because you like her?” Joe said, watching him. “I feel so stupid. I can't believe that I'm so troubled because of a woman. That deceitful woman!” he exclaimed, still pacing the room. He was torn between the fact that she was his mate and at the same time, a dangerous enemy. “I’m so sorry, Sage. Don't worry. I'll take it from here,” Joe offered, moving from where he stood. “You don't have to. I only told them to scare her,” Sage replied, stopping in his tracks. Then he approached the room and walked in. Her forehead was bruised, her right eye swelled and her palms were scratched. Sage looked away at first then cleared his throat and asked, “Are you ready to speak up now?” She nodded, coughing incessantly. Joe grinned as he watched her groan in pain. “Augustine Rivers. It was Augustine Rivers. He sent me to find anything that could incriminate you,” she replied, covering up her guileful gaze with her disheveled hair. “That bastard!” Sage blared, fuming with rage. He hit the table and the banging sound startled Taylor. Then he pointed his finger at her, “How dare you approach me to steal on behalf of Augustine, that tiny twerp?!” Making a new enemy and distraction for Sage was her way out of the frenzy. Augustine wasn’t a saint. She could remember that Fiona had mentioned him as the new suspect, and Sage had always emphasized that Augustine’s company was Kinsmen Group's competitor. She kept her eyes on Sage as he fumed and barked at her. Her major concern was how he knew that she was a spy. Unless he had superhuman hearing, there was no way he would have overheard her conversations. She was always discreet with her operations and she embodied her new identity so well. Still, in deep thought, Sage's voice distracted her, “Joe, send the documents on the new drive you secured anonymously to the FBI. Augustine has to pay.” Joe nodded and left the room while Sage stood before Taylor. “I’ve never been as disappointed in anyone as I am in you. I tried not to believe that you could be a mole no matter what Joe said. I'm not going to dwell on any of that anymore,” he walked towards her side. He sat on the table, watching her keenly. “You work for me now. Not as a PA but as a mole,” he declared. “What do you mean? Augustine will kill me if he finds out,” she said. Sage stretched his arm towards one of the men who dropped a gun in his hand. With a swift motion, he pulled the slide back, the metallic click echoing in the silence. As he released the slide, the bullet chambered with a thud, a sound that reverberated like a warning bell, clear and sharp. “And I'll kill you right here if you say one more infuriating word. Don't take me for a pimp. I'm only giving you a chance for old-time sake,” he said, glaring at her. Tears trickled down Taylor's face as she stared at him. His expression was cold. Now, that was his real face. The real him that she wanted to know. The hideous face behind the mask. The hideous face of a murderer. She shut her eyes, brimming with inner joy because she was getting closer to her goal. When she raised her eyelids, she spoke. “What do I have to do? I’d do anything as long as you promise to protect me.” “You don't get to strike deals,” he answered, scoffing at her request. “But I could shake things up for Augustine with all the dirt I've got,” she offered, hoping he would take the bait. She knew she was playing a dangerous game, but with all she's been through, she would put her life on the line to avenge Jude and her son. “In the depths of her heart, a woman carries the strength of a warrior. She will fight for her loved ones until her last breath. She would walk through fire and face the storm, for love is her armor, and her heart is her sword.” - Unknown.
